I know that I could find something decent by just using Google, but I figure that some of you fine peoples might have some better suggestions. That's about it, besides that if the place you suggest has a problem with ROM hacks, it won't work.

So... how about it?

Wow, this question gets asked so often I'm wondering if it should be in the FAQ.

...well, the diffrence is.

Erkdog no longer enters the thread and offers his cheap hosting nowdays.

Most free hosting I have seen is crappy, I have myself considered to buy some cheap hosting since a certain cheapskate won't share some of his hosting. (which is understandable, around 30 mg left of space)

I used tripod for free stuff, works well. Or you could always set up a own webserver which I did. But you have to be pretty techsawy...

I was thinking the exact same thing when I read the thread title. You beat me to it though.:/

Course, you DO know that if we added it to the FAQ, it'd still get asked, we'd just all write responses saying to read the FAQ

Geocities is alright; there's some ads and remote link blocking but they're easy to get around. 3GB bandwidth too. Avoid Tripod and Angelfire at all costs.

Eh? 3GB? Are you sure about that? There have been countless times where I've visited someone's site to look at hack screenshots or download something, and I get that stupid "this site is temporarily unavailable" message. Unless they recently upped the limit...

That's what it was last I checked. Might have been because I had an account for a while, or that I had the email too. It does seem to disappear pretty quick though.

I have to agree. In this case, I wouldn't have posted this thread if it was covered in the FAQ because I actually check that kind of thing. So covering this in the FAQ wouldn't be totally useless, although I'm sure that you'd still get some of these threads either way.

Thanks for the replies. I'm still looking for something a little more *special* I guess, so keep suggestions coming if you've got them. It sounds like Erkdog would have been a big help if he was still offering that kind of stuff, but... oh well...

No, not Geocities. Anything but Geocities.

Free hosts are OK if you only want to use HTML and images, but there are a total of zero free hosts in the entire universe that support, say, PHP, that don't randomly delete sites just because they have a message board. *remembers when Black Lord was trying to start an Acmlmboard on a free host, and every single one got deleted within a few days by the host*

Actually, all I'm really looking for is a place to create a page dedicated to a hack that I'm starting to work on. Basically it'll just be screenshots, updates, and eventually have a download for the patch. I'll probably use it to store my images and layouts for this message board as well. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't take too much to handle all that.

I've found http://www.atspace.com/, and (to me) it looks all right, but of course I don't really know the ins-and-outs of this sort of stuff. Again, anyone with more advice or another suggestion should keep them coming. I haven't decided on this one for sure.

Oh yeah, I don't have a domain or anything, they cost $$$. I'm content with having a sub-domain of the place that hosts me. Ads, of course, aren't desirable to me, but only to a point. If the best place has ads, I'll probably still take it.

edit: dang it, it has a 200kb filesize limit - oh well, off to search again...

Thanks a lot Gywall, but I think I've found something that'll work. I've already signed up and everything at:
http://www.webmanage.org/.

There is a very good site for searching for free web-hosting here:
http://www.clickherefree.com/

And here is the description that it gave for Webmanage, in case anyone is interested in it too:
http://www.clickherefree.com/hosting-free/details.php?id=1949

Thanks everyone, now I can die happy.

Correction. Me. I do host stuff for people (I run a ROM site...) and so I really don't care about ROM Hacks. Although, I can tell you now - hosting GCN ISOs or the like (anything over 3 GB) will make me shut down your account.

PM me.

Also, I'm a pretty good webhost, but on some days I can be a bit sadistic, so that is something you may want to watch for.

And now that i read the last post and saw that you found one, I feel like a complete idiot. And I'm not wasting this block of text.

So, if anyone does want free hosting, PM me.

(I was not trying to steal Luigi-San's idea. I've been going by this for the last 3 years.)

Why not? It beats all the other popular ones:
Angelfire - Popups, annoying anti-linking.
Tripod - Popups, ads EVERYWHERE, and one of the most annoying anti-linking I've seen yet. (No way I know of to get around it if the person hosting the image hasn't set it up to do so, and it plops down a big fat ad. )
Freehosts - unreliable (linking problems, etc), craploads of ads.

Really, the only thing Geocities has is anti-link that's ridiculously simple to beat (rename images to .txt or add a question mark to the URL) and unintrusive, easily-removable banner ads. Compared to popups, more complicated anti-linking *cough*tripod*cough* and downtime, that's pretty damn good for a free host.

Sorry for the small bump, but I felt that the last post here warrented a reply after what just happened at Webmanage. They have decided that they can't handle the load of having so many free accounts - so guess what? My account was deleted, without a day's notice, and they now only serve paid accounts. Not a big surprise I guess, they weren't really obligated to keep a free account up or anything.

Too good to be true, I suppose...
