Thought I'd throw this out here.

I think it would be a good idea. I don't see a whole lot of "Blaster Master" or "Gradius III" threads in the General Gaming forum, so making the General Gaming forum a more up to date gaming forum, while having an "old school" gaming forum, might be pretty neat.

I guess?

Vote. And please, if you vote, explain your reasoning. It bugs me when people just vote and never post anything.

I think it would be cool, I'm a BIG fan of classic gaming, but don't really like the new stuff...

Because the gaming world is a lot bigger than it used to be. One forum cant be enough to have the 20+ systems out there.

Yeah. I think the presence of the forum would actually encourage more discussion than there otherwise is about classic gaming. Obviously it's something people like to talk about, since when old games come up in current threads people are all over it, but people don't seem to like making new threads about old games, which is understandable.

Sooo... yeah, I don't see any reason this could be bad.

True true... there probably would tend to be more gaming topics if there was a classic gaming one. But the point is... what is "classic gaming" and what isn't? When is a platform old enough to be considered classic? The N64 is old enough eh?

i think "classic consoles/games" are ones not produced anymore, example. NES. N64 PlayStation 1. etc.

Well, yeah, it's largely subjective. I'm pretty sure it could be left undefined without any problems arising.

And well, I think most people can agree that anything that hadn't been curren in the latest three years is probably classic.

And well, with your logic Punisher the NES wouldn't have been a classic until last year. Nintendo was still producing Famicom until the last year in Japan.

I'll copy over from the discussion over this:

Half and half. Depends on how far back we're talking here. Classic in my right's probably going to be around the time of SNES's end or earlier.

Might be a flop of a forum too, depends if there's REALLY enough interest in something like that...I mean we already have a SMB and FF forum...is it really going to be good to add yet another gaming forum to the fray when those two feel like flops as it is?

Personally, if you did that, it'd probably be better off to shut those two forums down and direct whatever traffic that they WERE getting to General Gaming, that way you'll get a lot of those threads about old SMB or FFs or whatever a place there along with a load of others.

Reason I say shut two down for the price of one is that we don't really need an addition to a large amount of forums already and considering their activity and content, this would be nailing two birds with one stone, IMO at least.

I'm also a fanatic who adores older games, but General Gaming should be enough for both games. As long people won't start flamewars like "D00d, ur gay cube suk ps2 is teh rel !!!111oneon", there should ne no problem with all kinds of games.

Although I personally like the idea, I doubt it might get that huge activity over longer times (without considering repetitive topics in a short amount of time), so things could be left like now.

well, there's almost never any topics on older games in General Gaming, the only forums that ever seem to have mentions of pre-Gamecube/PS2/Xbox games are the FF forum and the SMB forum.

I like Yomiko's idea. Add Classic Gaming, drop FF and SMB forums (or at least FF; the Super Mario series forum does get a reasonable amount of activity), and move their threads to the appropriate forums.

Seriously, I think the FF forum's been dead for over a month.

I agree. General Gaming and Classic Gaming could easily accomodate all the activity in FF and SMB, and as I stated I would expect there to be more discussion if there's a dedicated forum.

Agreed to most of what's been said.

Honestly, I'm surprised both the Super Mario and Final Fantasy Forums have lasted this long, but like Tamarin and others said activity in them as of lately hasn't been too great. I've just never really seen the purpose of "Gaming specific Forums" such as those two.

And about "What is Classic Gaming", personally, I'd say anything before the "Current Systems".

But yeah, I just thought about this ... and true that there's hardly any talk about old videogames in General Gaming, but I'd guess if some people were to make a thread in that forum about an older game or something, it might just get ignored. So having a new Classic Gaming forum could spark up new topics, topics could be moved over and would actually be noticed, etc.

Just my opinion on this.

We already HAD a Classic Gaming forum on the board in 2001. It ended up merged with General Gaming due to relative lack of activity. So there you go. I like it the way it is... more variety.

2001 was a long time ago.

Spoiler:
this post relies heavily on that thing where you read something in a certain context and it snaps to be an argument somehow -- anmely, saying that 2001 was a long time ago says that it may be time for another chance at this forum, though some of you won't get it, hence the spoiler. idiots.

Well maybe, if tossing the two game specific forums, then making a Classic Gaming forum, will make it a more active forum?

And yeah, 2001?

We have classic gaming forum, or their equivalncy. And they are f'in dead.

Final Fantasy, Mario...Activity? Bonjour? Activity. No pulse. He's dead Jim.

This will just be a waste of time. Board activity doesn't warrent. If there is to be compromise, then make a few "classic games" threads. You know, for the big ones. Mega Man, etc. Because you know. Adding a Mega Man forum is just brilliant!

How active is General Gaming now? It really doesn't need to be split up.

We also had a foregin language forum, I really want that one back. I want to speak Swedish on the board.

Hey, we do have alot of Swedish members on this board.

I wouldn't mind FF and Super mario go if the classic gaming one was added, and when we're talking about forums... someone should add describtion to the SMW and Pokemon hacking forum. I could came up with some describtions if it's that hard.

The FF forum should be expanded to be the RPG forum if we are doing gaming reorganization too. Activity has slowed to a crawl because very little FF stuff is going on.

I don't think the mario forum should go away, I feel it's part of the essence of the board some how...

Classic gaming...it's worth another try. Back in 2001, the board was new and few members. However, we are a lot bigger community now so i think there will be activity...
