Alright, so I have a bunch of episodes of Ranma 1/2 in .mkv format, which I use VLC Player to watch. This works well for most, however, one of the episodes (season 2, ep 3) is missing subtitles, and I don't speak Japanese that well yet. I have a copy of the subtitles in a .srt file, but for some reason VLC won't read it, even if I tell it specifically to use that file. They can't seem to figure out why, so I need to find one of the following:

-A way to get VLC to read the .srt file.
-A program that can open the .mkv file, embed the subtitles into it (like the other episodes have) and save it in whatever format. (VLC can play just about everything, so the format isn't really important. )
-A decent program that can play the file with subtitles. Preferrably one that doesn't use the Windows Media core, because every program I've tried that does was far too slow playing .mkv files.
-A copy of this episode with the subtitles in it. Don't really care if they're hard-subbed (part of the image itself) but the other method is preferred.

Also, just FYI, the video contains two audio tracks; the first one I don't care about, I only need the second. (The first is English, but the voices just make me want to puke. No way I'm using that. )

1. A way to get VLC to read the .srt -- have you tried to make the .srt file have the same name as the movie file with the exception of the extension?

2. A program that can open the .mkv file, embed the subtitles into it -- i guess virtualdub is out of the quesiton. Maybe it is possible to use virtualdub to seperate the movie (possibly audio) into their own tracks with virtualdub and then merge them in virtualdub

3. A decent program that can play the file with subtitles -- so BSplayer or PowerDVD relies on the Windows Media Core?

4. A copy of this episode with the subtitles in it -- there is boxtorrents but you'd probably have to download the entire thing again...

As for an alternative, have you tried installing VobSub? It's a nifty program that displays subtitles on the fly without having to embed the subtitles hard. Works in media player classic and in WMP8/9/10.

1 - Yes, as well as using Open and choosing the file specifically.
2 - VirtualDub won't open it, I don't know of any that will.
3 - Haven't tried them, I'll take a look.
4 - That's where I got them.

Pretty sure I have VobSub, or at least something like it for WMP. It worked but didn't help the speed any.
