So, to kick off the forum I pushed to get made on the old board, I have a suggestion.

User-updated photo album pictures.
We'd add two optional feild in the profile (or maybe a seperate page, like addpic.php) , asking for a URL to a big picture, and a URL to a thumbnail. When picture uploading is implemented we could offer an upload script.

I was also thinking that possibly (I don't know how much coding any of this would need and I'm a lazy bastard) we could add an approval script so that Admins could make sure the pics were safe before they went in the album.

Sorry this was horribly worded, but you should at least get the flow of my idea. It would mean people wouldn't need to wait ages to get their photo album pic updated.

Becuse it takes time implenting?

Yeah an approval thing is an good idea, it will render the photoalbum thread useless.

But then, there is an script needed for making the thumbnails.

Letting members use something like that isn't really a good idea; better is to make an admin-uploader where all you have to do is upload a pic using the good ol' 'Browse...' input. Either that, or making sure that the upload has limitations (maximum file size, only certain extensions, etcetera).

But the thing is, if you let users upload their pics like thad, they'll upload crap, guarranteed. People... just do that.

Maybe that you must have been on the board for awhile before being able to post the picture?

And incase they do upload stuff which is "crap", then they should get an warning or ban.

And do you really think that works? That's the same as posting behavior. People are not supposed to spam and they still do, the same will happen with a photo album upload script, trust me; been there, done that. Period.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with Tuvai. You give people a little freedom to do something and they abuse it. It's not as simple as banning someone because they have done an offense. It only fuels them to continue doing it. Besides, you'd have to be on the board almost 24 hours a day to make sure nobody was uploading dirty pictures.

It's been done on Battlepony, and is a useful system for photos. However, Bp uses a resizing system instead of a thumbnail one. But it is useful with a say, 10 post restriction.

He's just using the HEIGHT and WIDTH tags to make it appear smaller. It causes the page to take longer to load than real 60x60 images.

That resizing system is bad.

For the smartasses who don't know. If you have a 1000 x 800 pixel image, and you display it on a webpage using <img src="image.jpg" width="250" height="200" alt="resized image" />, in spit of the fact you show a resized image, the original image needs to be loaded. I doubt people would want to wait for hundreds of KiloBytes of images to be loaded as soon as they click the Photo Album link.

Like Tuvai said, people would definently abuse this one. Maybe there could be a way that a staff member can double check the image when a member puts on in, or just a system where members can send a staff member a picture, and they can then put it in.

If the admins have to approve everything that's been uploaded before it's displayed, then the crap will get filtered out.

Yes, Elric, but that still means people CAN upload crap BEFORE it's validated.

It should be possible to make a PHP script to automatically resize an image down to 60x60, and save it...

The directory would have to be CHMOD'ed to 666, though. And that's a big security risk!

Or they could have a button by Quote | Edit | Delete where you click add pic to photo album and it would find the image in all the text or another idea...

They could have a link in there profile and you could just click add with a high enough powerlevel.

How is a picture in a photo album more of a risk than a picture in a post layout, or as your posting icon, or included as an image in a post... Did you guys restrict that at some point that I'm not aware of?

It's not a security risk at all; as long as you write proper scripts that only allow limited types and sizes of files. I got numerious directories at my server at CHMOD 0777.
