Okay, so I got to school rather early one morning and a few people were waiting outside the gates. There was a group of asshats soliciting outside (obviously no business waiting right next to our campus) they were looking for one of their friends who went to college. They picked on a lot of the little freshmen and made fun of college students for being smart. I was tempted to shout "What, THE fuck...?" but I kept it to myself. It's been about an hour until a professor finally came. Mr. Boyd fought in nam and he's still a very nice teacher nonetheless, he never let all the terrible things he saw get to him, and I highly respect that. He opened the gate for us and questioned the do-ragged people. He did'nt let them in because he knew they had no business whatsoever to enter the campus. After he left their sight, they said some things that really pissed me off. "Crawl into yo dirty f*cking ho you ugly ass mutha f*cka! I f*cking beat yo oldschool ass up!". Rather than just totally losing my mind, I just kept it in for awhile (besides, they might have guns). That bothered me for over a week now and I have to let this question out. What kinda scumbag thinks they are better than everyone else? What did they do for the world that was so god-damn great!? They are'nt in school, they live in their welfare and kill people for drugs for crying out loud! I hate people like that inside and out. |

To be fair, we make judgments about people like that everyday... She's rich, he's a pothead, he probably doesn't work, she looks like a tramp, etc. It doesn't mean our judgments are right, and we'd never say the stuff out loud... but we do think it. (That's my sociology degree at work right there.) Back to the topic of why people would hang out outside a school they don't go to in order to look for someone... probably because they don't have any respect for the rules of society. They're deviant (yay, more sociology!), yes, but it has a lot to do with their mentality and so on. |

Colleen: I don't mean to sound rude, but I can safely say I do not make judgments about people. And it's only improved my relations with people. It's much easier to make friends because I look at who they are not what they are(a line I use too many times) and as such, I don't make assumptions about them. I think that just because it's common, doesn't make it right. (That's another line I use too often) It may be tough, as it would be for me as well if strangers made fun of someone I respected as well. There are two things I would do: A.) Ignore them and walk away.(or try not to listen) B.) Wait it out to see if they shut up. C.) Tell them how wrong they are. If I'm feeling up to it, I would choose C. It's a little risky, but I feel that people should know the truth rather than blurting out lies and disrespecting people they don't know. |

I have a theory on why people behave the way Cruel Justice has pointed out. From the point of view of a working class person or someone without the ability to go to college, college students are the priviledged class. (Which is bunk, I know. Many people pay for college themselves or take out massive amounts of loans) Perhaps they anticipate that you think you are better than them, and are simply jumping the gun and trying to show you that they have the same attitude. Of course, I never understood how you could make fun of someone for being smarter than you. It's sort of like belittling yourself. |

Originally posted by The Dogan I hope you're meaning in the prejudice sense. Everyone has an opinion about everything and if you don't believe me...well you just proved my point. I'd pretty much negate the 'dumbass welfare and druggie whore' line from that whole rant and you'd have a perfect example of bullies that never grew up or the nerds that were picked on that eventually grew into the people that picked on them. Basically, the only reason they do it is for attention for themselves by getting you pissed off or just an in-joke in the group because some guy made some lame-ass statement, usually moreso when getting owned, more than likely they either don't care about how to act appropriately in public because of some self-esteem issue which is basically remedied by looking cool in a group. My experience with it is to ignore it, as said, because I'd rather not press the gun or shiv issue either. Sometimes, though, if I feel it's some dumbass punk that doesn't know shit about what they're talking about and poses zero threat to me, I'll usually add in the look at someone, look down, look up, arch eyebrow, shake head, lightly scoff in amusement, turn, walk. It'll probably piss them off but the whole partially silent body language ordeal but it's like dealing with 10-year-olds most times. Not really worth the time dealing with someone that's less cooperative than my sister when she wants her way. I already deal with that stuff on an almost daily basis as is. :\ As for the whole make fun of people because of higher intelligence, it's usually the whole jealousy complex. Most times when a threat like that is posed, people are going to do all they can to find one thing wrong with you and then tear you apart because of what's 'wrong' with you. |

Originally posted by The Dogan In addition to what Hiryuu said, everyone, whether they realize it or not, makes a subliminal judgement about someone based on their societal schemas. If you see something you've been brought up to believe is deviant, you WILL believe, in some small, unmentionable way, that it is deviant and should be treated as such. You don't have to do it, you could always just say "No, I won't do that, it's wrong", but the thought will have popped into your head nevertheless. That said, I agree in some way with the whole "People who think they're better than everyone else" thing, but I have two view on it. On the one hand, people who genuinely think they are better than everyone else have something that needs to be worked out in their heads, and they need to realize that everyone has skills and strengths and weaknesses. On the other hand, the people who accuse other people (sometimes falsely) of thinking they're better than everyone else need to wake up and realize that by giving themselves the power to make judgement calls like that (as Dogan did say, I'll give him that credit), they are not practicing what they preach. I remember a small group of people would say I thought I was better than everyone else (and I nearly lost my girlfriend because of these people), and that I was an ass for it. Ironically, these people were actually trying to separate me from my girlfriend by influencing her that way, and saying that I was a creepy piece of crap and they shouldn't associate with me because I wasn't good enough for her. You can see the hypocrisy there. Bottom line, I think people should just stay out of other people's thoughts, because when it comes right down to it, the pope and I both go to the bathroom, and when we do, both of our wastes stink, no matter what happens. |
