I have this odd problem with my computer. Every once and a while, it will seem to freeze up. I can move the mouse but do nothing else. It stays like this for about 8 seconds, then the monitor goes black for a second and the screen reappears and everything works. What the heck is going on?

Might be some sort of defective screen saver, or a video card problem. Usually if the computer freezes but then starts running again, it's just running really slow because something's taking up a lot of CPU power.

That's odd. At the time, the only thing I had running was Firefox. I'll see if there are some video driver updates. The screen saver wasn't running, and I hadn't been idle at all.

hmm..i observed this phenomenon the other day when my friend was running Firefox on a Solaris machine. A number of things could be at fault. You could also try a spyware scan?

What kind of video card is it? I just found out that ATI video drivers have a feature called "VPU recovery" that will essentially lock up the system and reset the video hardware if it overheats or otherwise malfunctions. However, this is supposed to generate an error message (which I'm assuming you don't get), and normally only happens during periods of high GPU usage (i.e. 3D games).

You could also check your power management settings, make sure the monitor's not set to turn off after x minutes (that fixed the problem for someone on another forum).

It's an ATI Radeon 9700. So it must be doing that. Normally no error message, but recently it went black and would not go back to what I was doing so I had to cut the power. It restarted and said I recovered from a serious error.

It may just be some problem with the driver, but I've never seen it happen (though the screen has frozen at times, but I was doing some CPU-intensive shit) like that...

It's just a little strange that both times FF was open. Problem with its renderer?

Oh stop being a troll, X. Note that neo's friend was using Solaris (which is unsupported by Mozilla, but Firefox is free so I guess he compiled it), and Ksoft is running Windows. Most people on Windows are running as an Administrator, which is bad but unfortunately it's the only way to have it usable. On a *nix, a wise user will never run as root (or a user with such powers) unless doing admin stuff. Considering that he was running Firefox on Solaris, it's likely the friend knew what he was doing, thus wise and didn't use root.

I'd go towards the video card theory. While it can't lock up the system, it does control the video output, making it appear as such.

Well if FF was the only thing running, I wouldn't be too quick to disregard it. When it 'freezes', if you like move the mouse or type something, do you see the effects when it unfreezes or is it left the way it was? If these things are still happening, then only the display is actually frozen.

My changes don't take effect so technically the whole thing is frozen. It's also not just happened on Firefox, just mostly when it happens I am.
