An RSS feed is basically a dynamic XML file, which updates whenever the 'real' forum/thread page updates. The advantage of XML is that its data structure is so simple, so it can be used to easily exchange data between programs and/or websites. To use an RSS feed, there are programs called 'FeedReaders' from which you can link to RSS files such as the ones for Forums and Threads on this board. The FeedReader will display all the items (in this case, items will be threads when you use a forum's RSS feed, and posts when you use a thread's RSS feed) in the RSS feed, and alert you whenever there's a new item. So, in short and to keep things simple. By using RSS feeds in a FeedReader, you'll be alerted whenever there's a new post/thread in the RSS feed you're linking to. It's a great and quick way of notification and to keep track of the websites you link. Unfortunately not that many websites offer it. |

Looks like it's yet another Acmlmboard feature that I will never use, right up there with "Mark forum read" and the "Buddy list" features that appear at some other Acmlmboards...

Ooo! It's pretty! I've been using it and I really like it. I've noticed that you can only do this with one topic at a time. Is there any way to make it alert you when anyone posts anywhere on the forum? You know: Add every topic to the RSS dealy?

I actually use Mark Forum Read and I do believe a lot of SF/SB people use the Favorites feature, among other niche things on the board. RSS is an option. You can use it or you can leave it be, but it's totally up to the user. |

So there's no automatic way to have the whole forum in my FeedReader program? (edited by Nebetsu on 03-08-05 11:47 PM) |

The one true reason why you can't add forum INCLUDING all posts in threads, or even the whole board, is quite simply information overflow. You'd be overwhelmed at having even two or three threads in one feed simply because there's no easy way of distinguishing them. I think what you want to do is just having your HTML board delivered to you. Use your web browser for that, but don't try to shoehorn your feed reader into this. A feed reader is built to make it possible to read snippets from multiple feeds easily - but that works because of context. Different threads on the board doesn't provide different enough context to make it enjoyable to use in the same way as browsing the board. |

I think most of you aren't getting the point of this. If you want to keep track of the whole board, you use your browser for it, as always and normally. If you want to keep track of especially a specific forum or thread, RSS comes in handy. What's the point of having RSS display the entire forum's information or new posts or something? |
