Today, March 8, is the International Women's Day, a day for women (and men) all over the World not only to celebrate the achievements of the feminist movement, but also to look forward to see what may be done to further the fight for equality between genders. It is a sad notion amongst many people today that the fight for gender equality is completed, and that feminists nowadays are just weird women who need something to whine about. It is still so that in those countries that have come the furthest in terms of gender equality still find women underrepresented in areas such as work (including wages) and politics, while in most third world countries, women are still seen as nothing more than a commodity. Creating a fair World where all may participate on equal terms, regardless of their sex, race, sexual preference, or religion should be a goal everyone should have an interest in pursuing, regardless if they're in a suppressed group or not. |

You know somerZ for all of my anger towards women and how they've treated me sicne I was brought into this world, I'm a big proponent of feminism. In fact, a sad fact, I'm the only pro-feminist at my school and will routinely point out various points of mysoginy and chauvinism that exist within the school system, which I feel is inherently patriarchal in its teaching methods.

The fight for gender equality isn't over, unfortunately. We still have the glass cieling in this country, and many other problems. We shouldn't need to have self-defense classes for women; gentlemen, we should be able to control ourselves better when intoxicated (or should know better than to drink so much that we can't). On the other side of it...I have seen *too many* instances of the feminist movement being taken too far. To say that any man who has had sex with any woman is a rapist...what the hell...? Another argument that comes to mind is the claim that eating red meat is sexist against women (and yes, a couple years ago a speaker came to this campus, making these claims). I really don't see the "logic" behind either argument, can't help but wonder if eating white meat, or veggies, also qualifies as sexist. The Feminist Movement will continue to roll the eyes of others if people continue writing these outlandish ideas. And, when it comes our time (should we elect to have children), we, as a generation, should make sure that a.) our daughters will stand up for their equality, and will be able to defend themselves, and b.) our sons will never bring need for that self-defense, and will help out towards equality. |

Well, we have a swedish extreme-feminist who has created a feminist party. Gudrun Schyman. The crazy-ass woman wants to introduce man-taxes, taxes for men. What kinda stupid idea is that? I don |

Now, Malcolm X certainly had some messed up ways to look at the world, but should that have kept us from listening to MLK? You will always find fringe-groups, extremists, and other "lunatics" (as you might call them), but that doesn't mean that the cause itself isn't important, or that the majority of people actually believe in what the extremists say.

Besides, by staking out the edges of the spectrum of debate, extremists serve the useful function of enabling moderate activists to gain ground. "Tax men, they cause everything wrong in society!" "No! How about we just make sure women get paid equally for equal work?" "That could work..." ------------------------ "Stop exploiting workers! Get your factories out of Indonesia!" "How about we just let them unionise and treat them fairly?" "OK" ------------------------ "Black separatism! fight the white man!" "Hey, how about you settle for desegregation and some affirmative action?" "Yay comprimise!" ------------------------ So, to conclude: Extremists are extremists, but they serve a useful function in any given political debate. |

The local radio stations were very vocal about what day it was today - although one of them decided to play chick music all day. Not my cup of tea for long stretches. But yeah... very important day and I wished a few people Happy IWD today. Trapster - And yet she gets laughed at for that but I'd get killed if I wanted a woman-tax. |

A "man-tax"?! That's just dumb if you ask me. Just like the "mile-tax" that I've heard about. But whatever. I didn't even know about this day, and I doubt things would have gone differently if I did. Went to work, played a few games, and did the usual stuff. "Holidays" are overrated anyway. |

It was a Swedish party who got the idea about a man-tax... and the general trust of that party did fell really fast. Trust me, our population aren't stupid. I'm for equality, but not for punish men for things... oi. |

The fight for equal rights is far from over. Last I checked, the equity of pay for women was lower than men. Domestic violence was still at a staggeringly high level. Furthermore, women are being poorly educated on sexual matters. The fight has to move on, even if roadblacks like hhallahh have to be knocked aside.

Yea, that's right.. I need to be executed. The equity of pay for women is lower because of factors other than their gender. For example, if you take several years off to raise children, your pay will be lower. Once these kinds of controls are added, the wage gap decreases significantly (or vanishes, depending on who you ask.) Domestic violence is illegal. Those who engage with it should be prosecuted. I don't know what else you could want. Sexual education is not a gender issue. Educate yourselves. (edited by hhallahh on 03-11-05 01:06 AM) |

Noted. Obviously, I was talking about America, because I believe it was implied that there's still more work to be done here. "Not really," I'd say. Obviously, I can't speak for other first-world nations as well, and I know there are still serious problems in the third world. I suppose I should remember that most people here aren't American.

In the first world, Int'l Women's Day should really be viewed more in terms of solidarity with, and awareness of, women and the problems they have in other parts of the world (lack of franchise, genital mutilation, inequality before the law, forced prostitution, forced abortions or lack of access to abortion, lack of power and independance to escape abusive and exploitative situations in general, a whole laundry list of issues). It also should be viewed in terms of celebrating and remembering how far we've come and, yes, that we're really not at complete equality yet (especially with stuff like discrimination against Maternity)... but mainly it should be more focussed on the very severe problems in other parts of the world. |

Women are paid less than men, even in the first world, and thus the fight for true gender equality is far from over. hhallahh says that women get lower pay because they take years off to raise children. I don't know about the US, but in Norway, many people and politicians are fighting to change this. People want to give more money to kindergartens, making an incentive to have your child in a kindergarten while you're at work. There's also a petition set up by two politicians at a site called www.pappaperm.no, where you can sign if you want to change the current system, where a woman gets 52 weeks leave from work when she becomes a parent, while a man only gets 4 weeks. The system they propose, is a system where mothers and fathers take one third of the weeks you get off from work each, and leave one third that they can distribute amongst each other as they please. That way, men gain because they are recognized as equally important parents, and women win because their becoming a parent does not mean they have to take a longer leave than when a man becomes a parent. |
