Well, this particular forum probably isn't the place for this question. Maybe the Officer's Club is. Personally, I wouldn't give up the idea of working in a grocery store. You're young and I'm not sure if you have any work experience. Until you get some working experience you're going to find it hard to get a job in a LOT of places, so I wouldn't cross grocery store off your list. I'd work on creating a resume, based on the skills and experiences you have that you think would be a benefit in the workplace. I'd also look at maybe doing volunteer work or work experience somewhere to build up work experience. I'm not sure what an "internship" is, but from where I come from, it sounds like what we call "Work Experience Placement", so give one of those a try?? |

I'd personally flip this to General Chat because it seems like a more general "first job" type of question. *flips* The Quebec Government has a lot of work placement programs for students; they do them in conjunction with various businesses and companies. Everything from data entry to waitering to construction work. Basically the government subsidizes the companies to take on students for summer employment. Maybe there's something similar where you are? ...Of course, a small family restaurant might not be THAT bad if it's not too busy. |

I live in the US not Quebec area and that sounds a pretty good job but still I don't live in Quebec. Some work don't take any good experience of work so grocery stores are out of my way. (edited by Bush Hater on 03-03-05 11:05 PM) |

I worked at a grocery store in the meat cutting department. Great pay and it was pretty fun, that's how I raised the money to start my own business. But go to a local grocery store and try to get on in some type of specialty section, such as meat or at the bakery. If I ever needed a good paying job fast then I would be off to go meat cutting and I owe it all to my first job at a grocery store. (edited by Lord_Rain143 on 03-03-05 11:07 PM) |

And this is something that refers to me as well Bush Hater. Grocery stores usually pay good like the Woodman's near where I live. I don't plan to work there though even if it pays very well. I'm trying to get into a video rental job that's also close to where I live. No such luck yet but maybe if I bug them enough I'll get a job there. From what I know of is that if you're good with a computer go work someplace that uses them. Since most businesses uses computers nowadays and make sure it doesn't require higher school learning from college. Otherwise you'll have to go that route to get a good paying job dealing with computers. |

Just because you don't like working in a Grocery Store, doesn't mean you can't work in Retail I hated working in our equivilant of WalMart, and I don't blame you for wanting to avoid shops like that. There are alternatives, though. I work in a large shop in a mall that sells magazines, newspapers, books, stationary, cards, DVDs, CDs and Games. Sure, it has all the same annoying things as any other retail job, but I thoroughly enjoy working there because of the great team spirit, excelent and friendly management and their focus on quality over quantity. You can't afford to overlook retail for your first job. By all means avoid jobs that you know will screw you over, but try to be open minded. There are some great jobs out there if you go looking for them and want them bad enough. |

First off, do not be picky. I was picky at first when I turned 16, but after three months, I caved in and worked in fast food. It wasn't what I wanted, but I needed the money, and the people that I had worked with were really funny and nice people, so it wasn't that bad half the time. Another thing, don't give up. Just because you were rejected once, twice, or how many times, you just have to keep at it. Try looking online at places like Monster, Yahoo Jobs, and so forth. Most tend to look for people with experience, but it doesn't hurt to try. |
