Well, the title and Poll question just about sums it all up, really...

What do you prefer to do when making websites? Are you of the "Less motivated" type who like downloading ready-made tagboards, or are you uber-1337 when it comes to coding, and whip up your own tagboards and forum systems in minutes?

Besides the forum system part... I would say I was the type who create their own code... Well, not code... Just... You know what i mean!

Depends on the complexity of what I need...if I'm trying to access some Windows API stuff...i prefer downloaded code that someone else wrote--otherwise, my preference is always code written by me...since I know what the code does and that the code is safe since well, i wouldn't purposely write code to mess up my computer--but since I program in Java anyways...that is even harder to do

Look at this board and you can already guess my answer

But I do tend to "recycle" my own stuff a lot when I feel lazy ... for example, the background from Yoshi's Island that I've had in almost all of my post layouts

I've been writing in straight HTML for years. not to say I've been good at it all this time, but I've gotten better and better. when, on a whim, I decided to give XHTML a shot, it marked an important evolutionary turn for me as a web developer, with greater emphasis on portability and syntactically-correct, standards-compliant coding.

PHP is a more recent endeavour, but my knowledge of HTML has been absolutely invaluable.

to get to the point (and back on-topic), I'm definetely the latter: I write up all my own stuff. I don't trust other people's code, and even if it's proper code, I don't know it and thus can't work with it.

There's no point in reinventing the wheel I use downloadable stuff whenever I can.

Except for some of the scripts I write for fun. Like the message board I'm coding.

I try to write my own code most of the time. However, I do download other people's code, just to see if there are any shortcuts to what I'm doing. My vote is definately writing my own code, since the only way to learn a language is by practicing.

Except for the board, I prefer making everything myself...

I am making my own board software. However I doubt I'll use it at my own site, or that it'll be out in a while, for that matter.

My quiet blog runs on b2 because I didn't know diddlysquat about web programming when I set it up. Now that I've been working as a web developer for nearly a year, I know much more Perl, SQL, and JavaScript than I did back then (read: none), so I have the knowledge to set up my own stuff...but I'd probably still go with a prebuilt system because I have limited free time, and after spending 40 hours a week banging on code, I'm not that inclined to do it at home for free.

no, but at least you can say you made the wheel yourself, the way you want it, and know exactly how it works.

The disadvantage with downloadable things is that it's NEVER perfect for you as it's not made specificly for you. Obviously I make everything myself, and I made my own forum system and all lest you forget.

Concerning websites itself, I don't see why people need to download templates for a website. Once I got a layout printed in my head, it takes me what, 5 to 10 minutes to type out the XHTML (yes, I use XHTML too now instead of normal HTML) completely? Pff, why download other templates/scripts which are way bigger than necesary and can only be integrated in my site with a lot of workarounds and trouble?

I prefere to write all my own code. I am very anal when it comes to code layout, and there's nothing more annoying to me than having to wade through the heap of mess that someone else calls code.

sometimes i need things that are so crazy that nobody has written it already. It's a good training to write the whole page on your own.

Let's put it this way, downloading stuff others made is both lack of motivation and skills; period.

Well, I can understand downloading a forum system; a decent forum isn't made in just a few days, and not everyone can make one either. What annoys me is that there's just (too) many 'sites' that are simply put just a standard forum system or a downloaded portal system (PHPNuke), usually with the default template/layout they come with. All people care about nowadays is having a board, funny how they're suprised when it's a flop, though.

OMFG I HEV A PHPBB EN I INSTALLED IT MYSELF IMA WEBMISTER NOW IMS O L37!11 LOLOLROFLMAO!1

If someone else has already made a program I want, I'll download it. But usually I make my own to my custom specifications. Sure there's plenty of keyloggers but how many can be discretely shut off at any time?
With code, I usually write my own, but sometimes I have to use other people's code for over-complicated API functions. (Sometimes I dunno WTF M$ was thinking. Why can't they just have a simple GetSystemCPUSpeed() function or some such thing? Even just GetSystemInfo() in which you have to specify you want CPU, #1, clock speed would be better than having to get all the system info at once into some strange UDT and figure out the cryptic return codes. )
[edit] Hey, cool and smilies!

Downloading someone else code and modyfiying it is great if your are new for that language. Or if you like that type of board/program/os.

Making it from scratch is nice if you know the language and have the time.

(I should learn PHP someday...)
