I would like to make a network between a laptop and a "normal" computer. They have got one ethernet card each and are currently connected to the web through a router. The laptop have got Windows ME and the other one have got XP Home Edition. I've tried to use the built in wizards in XP to create a network (and have made a floppy disk containing the installation program for ME). However, I just can't get it to work. I suspect that they can't both have an internet connection and a network through the same ethernet cable, but I don't want to buy an extra card. Also, I would NOT like the laptop to connect to the web through the other computer. Have anyone got any suggestions? |

Format it and install XP. Seriously though, if both can connect to the web through it, there's no reason it shouldn't work, though you might need to unblock the ports. XP's Network Wizard seems to hate older versions of Windows though.

I made it work with XP/98... I don't know how though. They could only find eachother when my dad had his laptop connected. I think it occupied an IP address and made another available with same gateway as mine or something... actually I have no clue, it's just a theory.

hmm...i never had trouble networking ME with XP (or vice versa) and never used the network wizard ever. I believe you may need to install file and print sharing for ME and for XP for both computers to see each other. After all, the purpose for one computer to see the other computer is to see what files the other computer has, ya? You can check to see if you have file and print services by checking the properties of the connection. |
