Generally, U.N. scientists say that global warming is because of human beings (they disagree, however, how much it is because of human beings), many non-U.N. scientists say the same thing, while a few rather right-wing scientists claim human beings don't have nothing to do with global warming. Now, I know the majority of scientists have been in the wrong during disputes over different paradigms earlier in history, and they might as well be wrong now, as well. However, I still trust the scientists claiming global warming is because of human beings to some extent.

Unless your scientists are being paid to skew by political interests, since when are scientists right wing or left wing?

Scientists have been right-wing, left-wing, centrist, whatever since the day scientists stopped being all-powerful beings that actually managed to look away from their own political opinions when stating something, I guess... Seriously, though. Generally, what I mean by right-wing scientists are scientists who are in one way or another affiliated with organizations whose interests lies near what one would normally classify as "right-wing" (at least economically). Now, of course there are those independent scientists who agree with the point of view that human intervention has nothing to do with global warming, but I'm basically generalizing in my statements here. As for the U.N. scientists, as I call them, they are scientists set by the U.N. to research global warming so that they can advise the U.N. and the global community on what, if anything, could and should be done about it. The general viewpoint of these scientists is that human interference has an effect on global warming. They are not being adivsed or told to go in a certain direction in their research. Not that this doesn't mean that they're unbribable, they're, after all, human, but why wouldn't they then be bribed by rich industry-owners, wanting to destroy the image of global warming as a humanly created problem? |

Because they are foriegn and not very well known. The one diagram showing that earth is heating up greatly, like a hockey stick, has actually been proven to be false. It shows the med-evil warm period being much hotter than it is right now. So, production has what, gone up x1000? Then that would probably mean that humans don't have that much of an effect on global warming. I was watching the discovery channel a while ago, something about volcanos, my dad, who is not a scientist, but loves science oddly, just out of no where says: "I wonder if all the recent volanic activity is causing global warming?" Now I don't know, because I'm not a scientist myself, but it does seem likely... |

My problem with the whole global warming scare is that there's no proof that the effects of this would be negative. Anyone know what happened the last time there was a major global warmup? It was called the "Renaissance" some of you may have heard of it. |

thank you!!!! I'm sure Canada won't suffer from this global warming... Canada will have a much longer growing season.... and we will be able to produce more food, and a larger variety of food.... that's not bad... plus our winters won't be so cold.... I don't mind that oh, and global warming should put more water into the atmosphere right? heating up the polar caps a bit... shouldn't that increase the amount of rain that the world is gonna get.... at least in theory.... that's probably good too |

So major climate changes is a good thing, even if it can get colder in a certain parts of the world? You know, it could as well cause colder weather up in Canada. Weather is never 100% predictable, and so is it with the climate... |

well, if we are talking about global warming.... then, the globe warms up.... meaning higher average temperatures overall.... meaning that Canada will be warmer.... which is a good thing ... if you just want to talk about temperature

||bass, geogree. Where is the substantial proof that it won't be harmful? And besides, the Renaissance during after a "miniature ice age" that occured in North America and East Asia. Note the previous term. It wasn't a magical "wow, the weather is warm Machiavelli, want to go muse and create brilliant philosophy and strengthen the Catholic Church!?" it was a combination of political factors that contributed to the reemergence of old Greek and Roman knowhow. geogree. You know what ice is? You know what happens when massive amounts of ice thaw? You know what water is? You know ice is made of water? Did you know that when ice melts, and the water is added to the ocean water tables that it could completely wipe out most coastal cities? (edited by Ziffski on 03-02-05 06:35 PM) |

Well, screw the folks for living on the coast either way. The sea is a dangerous friend. But somewhere along the line I read that an increase in temperature will adversely affect rainfall patterns. Areas that were previously temperate with a reasonable amount of rainfall (America, Europe, I guess, maybe other places), would suffer extended droughts for years. Even though Canada and the US would heat up, rainfall would be practically nonexistent. The precipitation would shift to other areas of the globe.

wow, thanks Ziff.... I know what water and ice are... and I doubt that enough ice will melt out of nowhere to just wipe out cities.... sure, the cities may have to move.... but they won't just be wiped out |

It's not like we have an exact timetable of when the ice caps will infact melt...I mean, this will be out of nowehere, so we may very well not have enough time to move the cities. Even then, who's to say how much destruction it can cause? There's no real ways to stop a massive flood, if you only have a few days notice. Global warming is a fact, and one that needs to be addressed pretty soon. |

Ok, so I'm confused, some people say that there is no true proof of catastrophic global warming, but others are saying it is a fact? Can someone please cite some sources so I won't go insane? (although mildly because I'll most likely just shrug it off in the end.)

Just check the UN website and pretty much every single university with a respectable science program in the world. Almost every scientist agrees that catastrophic global warming trends will occur naturally, but mankind is speeding them up to unhealthy extremes. The people against are the SUV Owners Association of America, OPEC and other interest groups. |

Originally posted by Ziffski No, no, no... You can't check the U.N website, those guys at the U.N. wouldn't know anything about global warming, because, apparanty, they are... Originally posted by Dracoon *cough* Now, what does the U.N. scientists being foreign (foreign to what, the U.S.?) have to do with anything. And are they really foreign? I'm quite sure you'll find a lot of Americans among those scientists. As for them being not well known, well, that's just ludicrus, they're among the top researchers in this field. UNEP is a nice place to learn about the various environmental and economical advantages to battling global warming. (edited by The SomerZ on 03-03-05 06:30 AM) |

Ok, then how come I know 0 of them, and I can garuntee, almost everyone in our country doesn't know who they are. I'm not saying they aren't well-known by researchers, just by the general public. Still, the only way to prevent global warming is to destroy how our industries work. We will be stopping mass production, killing a lot of jobs, and in the end screwing our economy completely up. I'm talking about the USA, oh and doesn't Canada get quiet a bit of things from the USA? (products wise) |

Yes, Canada does, but we still need to find a way to prevent global warming without destroying our economy. Because global warming is a fact, and it is growing. Last year alone the average temperature of Earth went up .8 degrees, which was enough to melt enough ice to raise the sea level by two inches. Now it is predicted that it is only going to get worse and it will keep raising by about 1.1degrees. So take this into consideration .8 degrees equaled two inches how much will 1.1 equal and every year that goes by it gets worse. So we to solve this problem before it gets to be to much for us. And yes, it will make it rain more, but it will begin raining to much and it will flood areas. Like Canada will get more rain and more rain until it eventually floods the coast lines of Canada and maybe even more. |
