Is it normal for a dying hard drive to only malfunction every couple of weeks?
my laptop keeps crashing because it can't read the hard drive
its happened twice before in the last 6 or 7 weeks
it'll usually say "operating system not found" at least once.
last time, under Hard Drive in the BIOS it actually said NONE.
If its dying why does it work perfectly 95% percent of the time?

Whats going on? Help me!

there is probably something faulty with the connection between the HD and the computer. Maybe you can check to see if the physical connection between the HD and the computer is tight. If this is the case, then I'm not sure what is going on. I'd probably replace HDs before you really lose the HD for good...

It could also be the laptop that is faulty...

Coming from experience, the first time you get an error message like that and you somehow recover from it, back your files up NOW. Don't ask questions, just do it. Most times when you start getting those cry wolf error messages it's only a matter of time before it's not crying wolf anymore and the hard drive bites the dust and...well...the wolf wins.

Neo could be right about a loose IDE connect but I'd wonder if it wasn't something internal that's start to die in it. There's a million and one different things that could be wrong. Also, how long have you had the hard drive in that laptop? A few years?

Couple small things I'd try to run diagnostically would be your ScanDisk and Disk Defrag to see if something isn't coming up damaged in the file system at all. Also, you can look at the SMART attribs from (most) any drive with Disk Checkup to give an estimate on your drive's status based on threshold values and see if something isn't giving WARNING or FAILING reports. If WARN/FAIL is the case at all for anything, then your drive is pretty much about to die, in which case you should be spending your time trying to get your personals backed up and a new drive purchased (though I'm not exactly sure how many laptop drives work, since I only used desktop).

Have you ever had HD problems once the system was up and running? It might just be starting up slowly. You should definitely check the connection though, and if that checks out get a new HD from a place with a good return policy and copy (not move) everything to it. If you have the same problem with that one, it's probably not the HD at fault, so just wipe it and send it back and get the system itself looked at. (If you're lucky, replacing the IDE controller might do it, but a lot of laptops don't really have one you can just take out.)

Heh, once I dropped my laptop and it started doing that... I thought I'd killed it for sure, but I opened it and found the HD had actually come out of its bay. I ended up sticking silly putty in to keep it in place, worked great until I went and shorted out the power board.
