Here is a level-design hack of SMB1 I worked on back in 2004 called "SMB - Mario in Zebes."

If you love Googie's recent SMB1 hack called Mario in Time is Ticking, you'll appreciate the style of design that preceded Googie's masterpiece and the similarities.

For one, there is a large gap that must be jumped before touching the flagpole at the end of every non-castle stage. This is intended to add some overall difficulty given that virtually nothing of the play mechanics were changed (except the fireball).

Get the patch here

Edit: I originally didn't have a pic for the hack, so here is a couple:

NOTE: I'm not trying to be famous or boost an ego, I just want to share a new simple hack to the world. At the least, it will have the same kind of interest as in how we first played the horribly mediocre hacks of the late 90's (but back then they weren't as horrible as in today's standards and available documents and utilities). Simple and different. Enjoy.

Thank you! Those are very encouraging comments, and I appreciate your time in giving the hack a try.

I felt like writing a paragraph explaining "Ridley"... here it goes...

The Ridley, to the best, is "Cyber-Ridley"... When designing, Ridley's graphics were chosen as a best substitute for Bowzer's tiles, taking in consideration how Bowzer is animated, etc. Then it was noticed that the head of Bowzer was an issue since Ridley, by itself, couldn't replace all of Bowzer's tiles. Ridley is mostly a vertical rectangle of tiles, while Bowzer is not as symmetrical, so some creativity was needed. If Ridley was left as is, Samus would inevitably be hit running/jumping into Ridley before actually technically hitting Ridley and lose power with or without that graphic for Bowzer's head. So, to make the most of things, that "thing" to the upper-left side of Ridley was to be glass... glass from a helmet, more or less, to represent a "dangerous" graphic. I tried creating graphics to take care of the gap between the glass and Ridley's body, but nothing really stood out, so I left him as is, with the hovering glass.

I'll admit... Samus's stance was a rushed design, as was her swimming graphic, which looks much worse. If more time was given, they wouldn't look as tacky as they are, but I'd rather work on a new hack project than refine this one. Maybe sometime in the future, but now I don't have the motivation to rework the work. This is much of a learning experience if I'd ever want to publicly release any more hack patches again.

Take care.
