There WAS a method, but it involved porting Midi to mml, then to hex. It worked but the end request was not top notch. You'd have to do further editing by ear using an emulator w/ debugger, and for impatient people, yours truly included, that didn't sit well.

This question appears from time to time, if there was a general ROM Hacking FAQ Kawa reply should be on it .

I have been working recently with MusicXML and I was wondering that it would be nice to have some sort of universal tool to convert .MID to a simple text format, but filtering only what's really essencial. MML isn't nowhere suitable for that, since it's a terrible format.

With a very simple text format, one could write music tools without having to reinvent the wheel, learning the quircks of MIDI (or other formats) parsing.

Oh yeah, weren't you attempting that with Super Mario 64? And can that work with any ROM type? Cause that would definitely come in handy for my Megaman Eternity hack.

Not sure if you understood correctly, one still would have to crack the specific format and find a good procedure to insert the music in ROM. The tool would only help making an easier intermediate format.

The MusicXML importer I'm working on generates intermediate data like this:

Part P1
Partname NONE
New Measure (0)
note 27 60 64 10 1 0 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              60 64 10 1 0      end_of_the_skype_highlighting
chord 1 2c 60 64 10 1 0
chord 2 30 60 64 10 0 0
note 27 60 64 10 2 60
chord 1 2c 60 64 10 2 60

Easier to parse, however it takes MusicXML as input, which isn't the best option for some sort of universal tool.

You mean that the intermediate data has to be fitted for the chiptune format of the game it's meant to be inserted in. And to boot, We need a specific type of protocol to enable the insertion of said data into the ROM of our choice?

wuzup peeps? Got top working on Eternity again. I wanted to try my hand at music hacking, but I wanted to start off easy so to kick myself, I did a simple copypasta of the Bubble Crab data from Chiko's R5DOSW and put it in my game. I did some tweaking, but the song does not sound good at all. here's a preview of what I did.

http://acmlm.kafuka.org/uploader/get.php?id=3439

dl it and then go to Diveman and hit start, then just listen and hit me with some feedback.

Hey guys, I'm back after a somewhat brief hiatus. Progress on the hack has been super slow lately, what with no reasonable continuity ideas. Add that to Real life, Second Life, Megaman 8-Bit Deathmatch, and Team Fortress 2, well... the hack's at a standstill. Any help that could kickstart production again would be well appreciated.

If you'd like to contact me, my twitter is @KeiroStarrRKDA (same twitter, just renamed) or on Steam. (Username: keirostarr)

Okay guys a quick update.

This hack is NOT dead. I will be working on it again very soon. I have had several ideas for levels including one from the NES Darkwing Duck game. I hope to get back on the scene very soon. But as always, help is well appreciated. If you want to contact me, I have multiple ways to be contacted.

The full list is at https://inkbunny.net/keryowolfe

hey guys, i'm back.

Megaman Eternity is on indefinite hiatus, due to irl issues, but I have a favor to ask. A while ago, someone created a repository or database of sorts where all the megaman rom hacks were being documented. They posted it here on the forums, but I can't seem to locate that post anymore. I need the link for a project i'm doing for the Mega Man 8-Bit Deathmatch Skulltag game. If someone can give me that link, I'd appreciate it.

Man, can't believe it's been 2 years since I last visited ACMLM. Still looks as cool as I remember it.

Lot of things have changed since I was here last. I became a GModder, Game Reviewer, Wii/Wii U Port Programmer for Project X, Second Life DJ, Game Caster for Zombspawn... I've been pretty damn busy.

But there is one more item I'm adding to that list: MAGFest panelist. I will be at MAGFest this January giving a panel on garry's modding with my good friend and mentor, The Inverted Shadow. Really psyched about it.

But that's not why I returned to ACMLM. The reason is because I heard that one of the ACMLM community members, InsectDuel, will ALSO be at MAGFest. I haven't talked to him in a long time and it'll be great to meet him in person and catch up on what I've missed. But I'm also intrigued to know if any other peeps from here will be attending the event. I'd love to get to meet a lot of people at the event, especially if I've encountered you here on the forum.

If you're gonna be at MAGFest, please let me know here so we can meet up. I'm starting to form a little clique of the people I'll be meeting up with. So far my Kliq is made up of The Inverted Shadow, InsectDuel, and the guys from the awesome Youtube show Continue?. And possibly the Game Grumps, considering Jontron likes to hang with the Continue guys a lot. But I want to meet more, so tell me if you're gonna be there and we'll meet up at the con.

I'm so excited. Hope to meet a lot of you there.

After 5 years in waiting, I hope it's been worth the development.

Back in 2008, a 20 year old guy had a vision. To create the most unexpected, unpredictable, full-on rom hack of Megaman 4 for NES. He had the drive, the idea, the motivation... however, college got in the way.

5 years later, the hack forgotten to time, the same guy, now 25, finds his long lost project buried within the depths of the board 2 uploader... and decides to resume the project.

One catch though... the guy doesn't remember ANYTHING about rom hacking. He's been gone from the scene for so long, it's a wonder he still knows how to use MegaFLE X. He doesn't even remember how he modified the music in Dive Man's stage without breaking the file. But he is still adamant in finishing this project he started half a decade ago. So he asks from anyone who is willing to lend a hand to please do so.

A little update on the hack. I had put these tilesets in the hack for Ringman's stage before I stopped development 5 years ago. Don't recall where I got them or anything, but I said "Screw It, Let's just roll with it." The Enemy data got messed up badly so I had to remove them all, so the level will have a full on custom enemy layout.

I've also started a dev blog of sorts for minor updates and what not. You can check it out at http://megamaneternity.tumblr.com

Good to see another hack being worked on!
By the way: Personally I think this stage background could do with less stars, especially the white ones.

Thanks for the input. I'll take it under advisement.

Something that's been on my mind for a while now is that I see a lot of people who have made songs in Famitracker and then ported those songs right into a Megaman ROM i/e Kevvviiinnn's "Original 40" Which was ported to Famitracker by MexicanSunflower on YT and then to Megaman Odyssey for Necroman's stage. Is there some sort of tutorial on how to do this?

Also, is there a download link to that Rockmen CX hack, ID, or is it still a WIP?

I gotta wonder though, since Famitracker can export to NSF and considering nsf files are just sound only NES roms, could once just copy the hex addresses from an FT generated NSF and paste them into, say, a Megaman 4 ROM, at the pointer of the tune they wish to change?

I had that thought once too. From what I understood, for every NES game, the developer had to program how the sound engine is handled.
So, most games (especially from different companies) has a different sound engine, Mega Man 3 to 6 uses the same engine (so you can just copy-paste hex codes to switch songs between games), supermegavery likely that Famitracker exports it's NSF music using it's own sound engine, which won't happen to be the one Capcom used for certain games.

But still, couldn't you just make a tune oriented to that music engine and copypaste the hex? I do believe FT has several different music engines for different types of game sound.

no..
fami tracker has it's own music sound format.
They cant be copied into megaman 3-6 format.

When kevin and mexicansunflower did necro..
well kevin did it in some different program like fruity loops or something weird like that.

But there's nobody i know of personally that knows anything about FL... so then mexican had to convert it himself to fami tracker...

then Matrixz had to convert the fami tracker to megaman 3-6 format.

Because he was the only person i knew that knows how to write stuff "from" fami... "to" mm3-6 format.

And I don't assume Matrixz could tell us how to do that, could he?

Matrixz already made a powerful document about changing music in Mega Man 3-6 format...

Check this thread

It can converts any songs outside NES Mega Man 3-6 format (especially MIDI) from anything music editor/maker softwares into its format whcih can be done by hex editing.

... *scratches head* ...

I need someone to translate this to dumb guy talk, I can't figure out any of this document.

Stoner stage?
It should have rainbows, psychedelic/weird stuff, tons of flashy colors.

If you do do that though, bear in mind it may mess with the minds of epilectic people.
