Dark Mario Update:

Pretty much most of World 1 is done now. World 2 has been started. Still lots of work needs to be done. Palette changes, graphics changes, and some ASM hacks. I'm currently working on coding a brand new intro/title screen from scratch. When it is done, I will work on incorporating it into the game. Right now it is running off of a ROM I'm coding from scratch. I will later copy the code into on of my free PRG banks, and get it to work with the game. Another ASM hack I want to do, is Multi-Directional Fire Ball Throwing. (Megaman and Bass).

One of the stages (the one with the bomb-ombs), requires you to set off a bomb (P-Switch). In that level, the rebels are using that area for military use. You have to destroy it. This is part of what will be the Mission-Based gameplay.

Ice Penguin, I'm currently working on a special patch for you, which will add some rain to the dungeons. The only thing I need to figure out, is the mapper addresses. Mapper 1 is a pain in the ass. But once I figure it out, I will give you the patch. I like what I see with your hack. Keep up the good work!

I needed to take a break from Dark Mario, and you inspired me to hack Zelda 2 as well. I'm doing a graphical facelift:

Original

New

I don't know what style really, I'm just trying to make the graphics better than the original. And as you can see from the two screenshots, Nintendo did some shitty graphics work on this game. I am confident in saying that my graphics are way better than Nintendo's.

This is really weird, but believe it or not, if you try to edit the "L" tile in the life meter, the game will lock up. Don't know why this happens. But I tried it, and thats exactly what happened.

If you don't believe me, try it for yourself. Just delete the "L" tile on the graphics page that is loaded at the beginning of the game. The game freezes. Now, why would changing a graphic have anything to do with crashing the game?

The "L" has blue around it, in the original game. What I tried to do, was replace that blue with the background color. When I did, the game froze. Also, if you just select that tile in YY-chr, and just delete it, the game will freeze as well. I guess its possible that the game loads the hex value of the colors used in that particular tile, for some special purpose, probably for what you said, to save space. Even though its a bit weird.

Dude, no joke, it has something to do with that tile. Do you have a copy of the ROM? Try it for yourself. Yes, I re-drew the tile, and the game worked fine again.

The second to last line at the bottom of the tile. I'm testing each pixel now.

EDIT - I'm not sure which pixel, but if you blank out certain pixels, the game will freeze.

EDIT 2 - I tried it on a different ROM, and nothing happened. So I decided to make a video.

How come whenever you place an object in the editor, when you load the game, the objects are pushed to the left further?

Thanks for the comments guys. I appreciate it.

I decided to upload a video I made on March 9th. I made a short teaser trailer for Dark Mario, but I didn't bother to upload it, because I wanted the game a lot more completed before I showed off anything else. I made the trailer, so I wouldn't forget about how I wanted my next trailer to be like (it takes a lot of work to make a trailer good and dramatic ). Everything you see in this trailer, is outdated. But, since things are quiet around here, and I don't think the trailer is that bad, here ya go!

Yeah, I saw this video on your YouTube profile a few days ago. I was really impressed with it. I'm glad you decided to finish these old hacks of mine. It's better than letting all that work go down the drain. I like the graphics too. Very nice work Googie!

The game is SMB3. What I want to do, is use one of my free PRG-banks specifically for my extra animation code, because using the space that I'm using near the original animation code, is glitching up my game. However, I have some questions concerning the bank switching code:

1. Can I swap a free bank into $8000-$9FFF, and then swap it back to the original bank, while the level is running? I've been trying to do this, but to no success, thats why I want to know if it is possible?

2. If you do a bank switch, does it start reading the code from the very beginning of the bank, or from the address that you switched the new bank in?

3. If you switch to the new bank, and you switch back, and it does start reading the code from the top, how do you bypass the Bank swap code? You obviously want the rest of the code to be read.

SMB3 Tile Animation Code:

$8E35:AC 1A 07 LDY $071A
$8E38:C0 6A CPY #$6A
$8E3A:F0 21 BEQ $8E5D
$8E3C:A5 15 LDA $15
$8E3E:29 03 AND #$03
$8E40: D0 1B BNE $8E5D
$8E42:C8 INY
$8E43:C8 INY
$8E44:C0 76 CPY #$76
$8E46: D0 02 BNE $8E4A
$8E48:A0 70 LDY #$70
$8E4A:8C 1A 07 STY $071A
$8E4D: D0 0E BNE $8E5D
$8E4F:A5 15 LDA $15

$8E51:29 18 AND #$18
$8E53:4A LSR
$8E54:4A LSR
$8E55:4A LSR
$8E56:AA TAX
$8E57: BD FC 83 LDA $83FC,X
$8E5A:8D 1A 07 STA $071A

My Code:

$8E48:A0 70 LDY #$70
$8E4A:8C 1A 07 STY $071A
$8E4D:A9 06 LDA #$06
$8E4F:8D 00 80 STA $8000
$8E52:A9 1E LDA #$1E
$8E54:8D 01 80 STA $8001
$8E57: D0 0E BNE $8E5D
$8E59: A5 15 LDA $15

I squeezed my bank swap code in here, but all it does is lock up my game, and it doesn't swap the bank in. Or if it does swap it, I can't see it in the debugger. Could use a little help here. I just want to swap a free bank in temporarily, have it run my code, and then put the original bank back. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Pokémon in Dark Mario?

I need an opinion on this. It wasn't meant to be a Diglett, just an angry hill, but the idea popped in my head. Why not throw some Pokémon animations in? I made level-specific animations for the backgrounds. The levels are going to be bigger also.

What if Mario could catch Pokémon (it gets stored in the item box)? A fun idea to play around with. And have the Pokémon level up?

Dark Mario is going to be huge. I have already done a huge amount of work on this game. Sometimes I question myself whether it still IS Dark Mario. Could change direction......

EDIT - I forgot to add, that if you like Luigi better than Mario, he will be playable in World 3. You play as Mario in Worlds 1 and 2. World 3 will be Luigi.

Totally kick-ass! Elecman looks better than he does in the first game, with the colors and his attack behavior. I also see you included a special charge-meter for the mega buster. Very nice!

infidelity, you even inspired me to work harder on my hack. So, if you don't mind me asking, how far done is this hack?

Did it take a lot of code to put the weapons picture in, and the charge meter?

Just announced. Brief info and video on the page.

http://www.jeux-france.com/news26233_mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe.html

What a dumb idea, in my opinion. I hope this isn't the new MK game that was in the works. I was looking forward to a fresh new start of the MK series, not some MK vs. comic crap. It's going to make MK look less serious.
