Because all you uploaded was an ips file, you should edit your post and state which Megaman game you can patch this to. Some already know, but there will be people who don't. To be honest, I thought this was a hack of Megaman IV, until I saw where you said "Proto Man Stage", then I knew it was Megaman V. But I love the graphics work you put into this hack. I can't wait to give it a try. I hope you will be able to finish it sometime.

NOTE: I posted this in ROM hacking instead of Programming because I believe it relates more to the NES and ROMs

A question for those who have ever programmed the NES. Do you need to look at NES documents, or are you able to just program without looking at anything else?

I find that I have to look at a the document nestech.txt, because I can't remember everything, but I was just wondering for those of you who have made small NES demos or homebrews, or have done any kind of NES programming from scratch, who are experienced programmers, if you can program the NES without looking at the specs. It wouldn't be considered "amateur-ish" to have to look right?

What made me ask this question?

Just looking at the asm code from programmers who made small NES demos. I feel like that maybe I'm not experienced enough because I have to always look at certain documentation.

For example, while I am familiar with how the NES operates, and I know the basics of C, when I was following a NES tutorial to make a demo, there were commands that I never recognized, like:

.org
.dw
.bank

Are these considered ASM or NES-specific commands?

And I never used the stack. Is it possible to get by without it? Probably because I think documentation on it doesn't answer my questions.

How many set of numbers can you place on a stack, or is it unlimited, because the stack is not a RAM address right? I've seen no indication that it is. All I know is that it allows you to place numbers on it temporarily so you can quickly use them again.

Also, I did SNES (rather than NES), but I found I almost never had to look at manuals because it was mostly trivial to infer from the command names, format of the arguments and the way they were used what the commands were supposed to do.
I'm sorry, I should have been more specific. I meant registers, like $4014 (Sprite DMA Register), $2000 (PPU Control Register 1), etc. Wouldn't it be pretty hard to remember every register for a specific system without having to look it up? I was just wondering if experienced NES programmers had these memorized by heart, and didn't have to refer to a document?

I'm glad to see that the activity around here has picked up a little bit. All of you guys make this place worth coming to. I can't wait to get back to work on my stuff as well. I've been working all week, but I'll have some time on Friday. Maybe I'll have some more stuff to show as well. I'm doing both ROM hacking and Multimedia Fusion 2. They are both a lot of fun and have their ups and downs.

I like the second video. Your level design is very good. The second video reminds me of Tomb Raider. I assume that at the end there, where Mario falls all the way to the bottom, that that is going to be a whole other underground area to explore?

HUFF, your level design looks very good. I like how the random intervals of lightning light up the path, and how you used more colors in Flash Man's stage, with those acid drops hanging from the blocks and spikes. Very nice level craftsmanship there. I look forward to seeing more.

I don't like it. It sounds like facism to me. I live in America, and I can see our government taking full advantage of this. Something like this should be illegal, but government does whatever government wants, and even if people complain about this, these things are so small that they could be anywhere, and how would you know?

It sounds like that wouldn't be too hard to do. It's most likely just an address that is set from 0 to 1 when a level is beaten, and all you'd have to do is edit the code to make it always stay 0, or NOP out some code or something.

I had a problem when I was hacking Megaman IV. How do you deal with repeated rooms? I was working on a clever level, I believe it was Pharoah Man's stage, and then the fact that 2 or 3 screens shared the same level layout pissed me off, because I had to redo what I wanted. Is there a way around this?

This is why I'm more inclined to just developing a Megaman game from scratch in C++.

I don't ROM hack anymore, but I am working on a Zelda game in Game Maker. It is a Zelda game that is supposed to be more like Resident Evil 1.5, the original Resident Evil 2 that was cancelled at 80% before they started over. Resident Evil is known as Biohazard in Japan, so the title for my game is Zelda Hazard.

Incase you like Resident Evil and/or Resident Evil 1.5, here is a 3 minute video of Zelda Hazard.

The acual music and sound effects are in the game, but the video recorder wouldn't record the sound, so I just put the actual music in the video.

I've been working on this for about 2 weeks now. Yes, that is broken glass on the floor.

Game Maker is very easy to use, and a lot of fun, it is just very time consuming to make your game! But I am still having a lot more fun than I did with ROM hacking. There's no limitations, and you can do whatever the hell you want.

I like this new theme blackhole89! It feels refreshing, and is easy on the eyes. I didn't know until I read your post that this was meant to convey "despair." I felt like this board was due for a theme change anyway.

How I feel about the board? I still check it every now and then. I would rather it stay to be honest with you. As you said, there are lot of factors that are the reason why this board has been slow, but it can always turn around.

People who loved ROM hacking, probably don't have the time anymore. Real life gets in the way. Not to mention the toughness of the world economy is making it hard on a lot of people to do the things they want to do, they are struggling just to survive.

I am optimistic. I think this place could get very active again. I say that based on what I did for TEK Hacks back in the day. We were dead just like this board, and I went around, recruited members who loved ROM hacking, and asked them to join, and a few months later, before you know it, TEK Hacks was booming. It was so awesome, and I was so happy!

Also, as the new generation of kids grows up, they started with systems like the PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and they probably don't know much about the retro systems like we do, so they are not even interested in them, much less ROM hacking.

I say keep this place open. Just for the sake of the ROM hackers who enjoy doing what they love doing.

As for the flame wars, the trolling, all that other negative crap, I never cared for it, even on the old Acmlm boards or anywhere else, but you deal with that when this place gets busier again. Don't encourage it, just be more relaxed about things like "one word" posts.

There have been times on other boards where I felt like making a post just to say "NICE!" because it was so awesome what I saw. If I did that here, I would get a warning for making a one-word post. A post is post. Posts that are considered really out of place should get the warning. Moderators should use good judgement.

Perhaps this forum could use some cleaning up for the New Year. Delete all of the posts in the Landfill. Who wants to see that? It promotes negativity. In fact, maybe we shouldn't have a Landfill forum. It might put off a new person who comes to the board. I don't know, it's just a guess. Only keep things positive. I wouldn't display trash threads for people to see.

Some board fix ups, like adding page numbers at the top of the forum pages, adding a Favorite Post button, to favorite a post that you really like, encourage post layouts, have contests for post layouts, keep things fun and positive. And please, no more of that random Dodongo that appears in the upper-left corner. It's really old already.

We have the Way Back Machine. Take a look back at what made Acmlm so great to begin with, and make it work here. We can have all of the activity in the world again. That, I really do believe can happen.

So, that being said, Happy New Year!

If it helps the activity around here, I have been working on a Super Mario Bros. 3 hack for two weeks, but I don't want to post any screenshots/videos, or any kind of info until I have World 1 done. World 1 is about halfway done though. I might release a demo of World 1 when it is complete. Just need to finish it, that's all.

I also have a strong interest in hacking Megaman again, so, we'll see on that too. I would love to see some more Megaman ASM hacks!

I like it. Keep it. Maybe just tone down the orange for those who think it is too bright. A darker shade of the two orange colors.

Not sure what there is to gain from hiding the Landfill from the main page...
Think of the landfill as dog shit that is in your backyard, and you are having people come over for a party, and most of the party will be in the backyard. You wouldn't have the shit where people are going to be walking, and you wouldn't want anyone to see it in the first place. Keep the landfill thread, but make it so only people who moderate the board need to see it, so they have a place to deposit bad threads without having to delete them, which would mess up the thread/post counts.

I'm not even sure if there is anything much to gain either, but the point of suggesting that was to keep things positive. Why make it so people can see bad things? Maybe it would hurt the board's image? You only want to show them the good things. Only promote the positive.

It was just a suggestion. Whether it is a good one or not, you guys decide. I'm not sure if it is good or not, just a thought I had.

But yeah, page numbers on the top of the sub-forum pages would be awesome, that way I don't have to scroll all the way down just to click a page number. They already have it that way in threads themselves, so I don't see it being too hard to implement in the sub-forums.
