It's a lot of fun. I'm pretty cheap, and hate a lot of games, but I feel like it was $50 well spent. My friends and I seem to alternate between genuinely cooperating and trying to throw one another down holes and things.

Also...
Spoiler:
I have every level in World 9 unlocked but 9-6 so far, and have all the star coins in each of those levels except 9-7. God, how I hate 9-7...

Yes! I love LCD games, don't ask me why. I always wished there were more "simulators" out there for the Mega Man Tiger Handheld ones, etc.

Yo, anybody use, or know of, a decent, open-source anti-virus program for XP?

I'm using ClamWin right now, which is good, but it doesn't offer real-time virus scanning.

I know there was an offshoot of ClamWin that offered something like it, and there's a project on Sourceforge named Winpooch that everyone keeps recommending, but both those projects were discontinued years ago.

Any suggestions?

Well, it's mostly because I just like the idea of collaborative software.

And oop--I should have written "free, open source."

But anyway, I also feel like, if the people working on a project are doing it because they, themselves, actually want to use the software, the end result will be acceptably functional, light, and user-friendly.

Thanks for the suggestions!

They probably broaden it to the city or even the state.

Our government is fucked up anyway and I plan on moving to Canadaland sometime.

Yeah, you've been talking about that for years now.

Let us know when you're actually gone.

Hey all! There are a number of forums on the board where this would fit, but I suppose this is the most logical. Maybe... If not, feel free to move it (not to the landfill, if at all possible).

Anyway, getting down to business:

I started a retrogaming blog a few months ago, and am seeking collaborators.

First off, the site in question: http://robotvaudeville.com

Here's the gist: Robot Vaudeville is a blog dedicated to appreciating retro video games. The aim is to post news, reviews, and editorials with genuine, un-ironic appreciation on classic games and retrogaming culture. The scope also encompasses contemporary games inspired by older video games: low-resolution indie stuff, classic franchise reboots like Mega Man 9 & 10, Sonic 4, etc.

(Incidentally, I'm not entirely happy with the current layout, so I've been working on that, along with some other, unrelated web design work lately... because of this, I haven't updated for awhile now, so don't think it's abandoned--take a look, I was updating 4-5 times a day for a good stretch!)

What I'm looking for:

1.) Writers. Opinions, editorials, anecdotes, walkthroughs, whatever you have to say, as long as you can write English competently.

2.) News contributors; people who can find an interesting link and post it, along with a relevant image and a very brief description/comment of some kind--a single sentence or two is all it takes.

For now it's just a hobby, so there's nothing in it but, eh, "glory" (hey, I'm not making a penny, either!), but there's a potential that it could grow into something, with enough regular contributors--anyone want to team up?

Send me a PM!

Aside from that, if anyone else has any suggestions for the site, I'd be happy to take comments and criticism in this thread. Or for that matter, if you have any ideas for how I could give the site more focus, differentiate it, etc., I'd love to hear your thoughts as well!

The story looks awful too.

Who the hell would play a Mega Man game for the story?

RetroRain--fair enough, I won't deny the story is kind of lame, but I don't mind; I'm admittedly something of an old man when it comes to these things--that is, I want certain things to stay the same. I want bands to not evolve and try out new sounds, and I want Capcom to keep making the exact same Mega Man game again and again till the day I die.

My only real complaint is that I keep accidentally hitting the stupid trigger and changing the weapon in mid-battle. I wish there was a way to disable this function. I've heard it's better with a classic controller. Maybe it's time I finally invested in one...

On another note: I've been attempting to beat it on hard mode, and I'm up to the boss rush stage, but am dangerously low on E-tanks and have zero bolts (would have beaten Wily phase 2 if I'd been patient instead of cocky, but never mind). Anyone know if I can collect bolts in another stage, head to Dr. Light's lab, then get back to where I left off? I know in Mega Man 1, for instance, if you go to stage select, play another stage, then head back to Wily, you're at Wily Stage 1 again. Does that tradition carry through to Mega Man 10? I'm too scared to try--I don't want to have to beat that godawful morphing Devil boss again!

There's a program called SMBFix that, true to its name, fixes problems with SMB ROMs that start on 0-1, etc. If I remember correctly, wasn't that particular problem caused by patches being applied to the Playchoice 10 SMB ROM or something like that?

Hey! I've had a (very) small hand in a non-hack web project called Funny Translator, which uses the Google Translate API to translate back and forth between English and 56 other languages, finally spitting out a snippet of text that rarely resembles what was entered in the first place.

http://www.funnytranslator.com/

It's fun and silly, but I'm pretty proud of it--if anyone would be so kind as to digg/stumble/join the facebook fan page/whatever, I'd appreciate it a lot!

Anyway, to make this post SLIGHTLY less blatantly spammy, here are a few of my personal favorite examples, which seemed eerily insightful or ironic...

Original: I hate google translate
56 Translations Later: I can not explain.

Original: Da da da da da, I’m lovin’ it.
56 Translations Later: Yes, yes, yes, I know.

Original: This is not nearly as fun as originally stated.
56 Translations Later: Interesting

Original: To be or not to be, that is the question
56 Translations Later: Ask

What do you guys think? Have any interesting examples? Post 'em! Or go ahead and "like" it on facebook! You could be on the ground floor of the next, I don't know, icanhascheezburger. Ground floor! People still like that, right...

Phpht--translation party. We scoff at translation party, right?

Original text:

"How do you feel about translation party?"

...56 translations later we get:

"How to download?"

Oh, brother.

Hm, now that is an idea. I imagine it could work in a Chat Roulette kind of way if there were enough people to actually get the ball rolling.
