Back in the mid-'90s, I considered myself a pretty hot-shot toughguy when I figured out HTML and started designing web pages and things.

Somewhere along the way I kind of gave up on the whole thing and never really bothered learning anything new.

Today I still know nothing beyond HTML and some rudimentary CSS. Every time I start to think about web design again I hear all these buzzwords and languages that mean nothing to me--Ajax, DOM scripting, DHTML, PHP, SQL--suddenly to be a designer you need a degree in computer engineering?

I'd like (and need) to catch up on everything that I've missed out on, but I have no idea where to even begin, how to fit all these things together, and so on, and even if I did I have this knot in my stomach that in the amount of time it took to learn any one of them, two or three new "standard" technologies will have cropped up to have made it obsolete.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can begin to tackle some of this? I have a web server up and running (barely) with PHP and MySQL installed (to experiment, since I literally no absolutely nothing about either--though running through a tutorial of how to get a simple database up and running on MySQL is still giving me errors, so whatever). The first person to give me some kind of worthwhile resource for a more-or-less total novice can have my firstborn. If two or more people can recommend equally-good resources, you may divide the infant amongst yourselves!

Edit: P.S.: I know about W3C schools, and while they're a great reference they're a terrible teaching tool; it's like learning to drive a car by reading the owner's manual.

Uh, Dr. Wily does not look good on this box art, and that is the point.

Awesome.

Pretty cool. I've had the urge to make both a text adventure and a treasure-hunting game lately, and it never once crossed my mind to combine them into one project. I'll have to give this a more thorough play-through and let you know my thoughts.

Last year I started remaking an old QBASIC text adventure game I'd made as a kid... time to finally finish or start over from scratch, I think.

Either way, the point is: long live text-based games!

No-no, my "awesome" was sincere. That image was the coolest thing I'd seen since this game was announced!

Well first I'd like to say your overworld layouts look great!

My only criticism would have to be some of the new graphics. Some of it seems really funky (the bushes in the first in-game shot and the angry blocks, for instance). Some of the other graphics, on the other hand, look fine--I like the somewhat abstract forms fading into the background in the underwater level, for instance.

And the one thing I'd recommend changing more than anything would be the blue floating platforms... they blend in with the sky a little too much. I'd say darken or lighten them a touch, or change to something other than blue altogether.

Regardless, looks like it's really shaping up into something good; keep us updated!

Silas--animated, it does look a lot better.

Hope I didn't come off as negative in my post earlier; your hack really does look cool! The level designs for the most part seem near-professional, and certainly original. I look forward to playing it!

Um, did I miss some rule that was added in the middle of page 23 or something that says you can change two letters in "1-Letter Swap" now?

and no, i didn't know that music was from MM9 September is right around the corner!!

September can't come soon enough, can it?

Anyway, LO, your technical craftsmanship is amazing, and your hack is progressing at lightning speed--I just hate to see you use your obvious talents on such tired, hackneyed things like another "Mario/Zelda/Whatever levels in a Mega Man game" hack. I'm not saying it to diss you or insult your work, I just can tell you're capable of so much more, and it seems like we've seen levels like that in Mega Man games many times before.

But it's your hack, and it's clearly solid and well-done, and I'm excited to play it either way. So do whatever it is that you gotta do!

This thread sucks.

And considering the general state of the rest of the board, that's really saying something!

It's hideous. I don't care how innovative it may or may not be, unless someone makes a Windows XP (in Windows 98 style) skin for it, I ain't havin' it!

So is Steam anything more than a web site, or am I going to have to register for something and remain a member if I want to keep playing the games?

You'd think, but it seems very ambiguous...

First it says:

After you've purchased a game, download it immediately and start playing.

Which would lead me to believe you download the games just like any other site. But then further down the page, it says:

Once you have a Steam account, you can sign in from any PC to access your games. Your games are associated with your account, not your computer.

Which sounds like some weird thing where I have to log in to their site to play a game I paid for. Ah, screw the whole thing.
