Everyone wants to make a game that they'll never have the skill to do.

I disagree. If people wanted to make that game bad enough they would apply themselves to learning how to make it. If you want something bad enough, you'll get it, but just sitting around wanting won't help.

nah, the charity artwork gripe I'm going through is more towards real life people, not just unfinished projects.

zoomed for pixel goodness.

Maybe she couldn't.

My high school worked like this: If you ever have more than 10 absences in any given semester, you WILL take 13th grade.
Most do, I think. Truancy laws, lol.

I got told that alot, they never did shit about it, though.

as for weird shit related to school, I'm talking to some girl I used to have a crush on in middle school.

thats like a long time ago. its weird.

There hasn't been much randomness and weird shit in the school I'm in now, though. Teachers care alot less about what you do, since its your money you're wasting if you don't pay attention.

although during my first quarter the power went out in the building while my teacher was taking apart a PC, I never heard a teacher scream "OH SHIT" louder in my life. It was lulz

I think the first level editor I used was either the one in ZZT or the editor in Jetpack around 1999/2000-ish.

man jetpack was awesome.

I used to play the living shit out of that game

WHOAMG TABLE STRETCH
It's not as complete as it looks, currently the ball bounces around, a diferent angle depending on where it hits the paddle, bounces off the walls and ceilings, paddle is controlled by the mouse, and the brick layouts are loaded from a file. however I didn't do collision detection for the bricks, yet, so the ball floats right through them

I used to do that sort of thing alot, mainly when I didn't know what I was talking about but felt like talking anyways, these days I generally know what I'm talking about and therefore do not have to put fillers in my words unless I... um... forget a word or something

It's just another arkanoid clone, currently not quite done yet, although I've got a bulk of it, and it is in a somewhat playable state. I'm basically making this thread as a public beta testing thread, because you don't always catch everything yourself. It's being written in Java, so it should work reguardless of your OS. It was developed with JDK1.6.0, so you probably need JRE1.6.0, so you may want to grab that from java.com

If there is anything that bugs you (other than the fact that it is java) please post about it in this thread so I can adress it.

Also, give it a few minutes to load the images; I'll add a splash screen eventually.

screenshot of the game:

known issues:
It runs too fast, damn me for writing and testing this on a slow PC.
ball doesn't regenerate after death

about the bricktypes for the level editor
They don't work this way in-game, yet.

but first metal shiny one is unbreakable
all the colored ones break upon contact
the cracking ones are "endurance" blocks that crack until they break, full form takes 3 hits
the black with white border one is a "ghost" block; you don't see it until you hit it

The game runs extremely fast for me - it's almost impossible to play because the ball moves so fast.

Oi. forgot how slow this PC was :/ I'll try to get to that soon.

And I can't figure out how to make a new ball appear on the paddle after you lose a life.

at the moment you don't. You just close the screen and re-open it.

a little helper I drew out to figure out collision for where the ball hits the brick, dunno if it makes sense to you but it might help someone, I'm also not sure if there are any errors, if there are feel free to point them out :x

Nice, setz. The colour scheme is a little monotonous though.

But, no table stretch here

Those are just the metal bricks, which eventually will be unbreakable. The level data is real simple, should be real easy to figure out if you open a hex editor. I plan on eventually making a level editor, though. after I get collision kinked out, add some music, maybe a splash screen, and a few other things.

Most people I know in person either refer to me as Joe or SJ(actually 2 variations on what it means) online, most of the people I know from the web either call me setz, setzer or Skiff, depending on how long they've known me.

As for other people, I'll call them by their name if I know them in person, in IRC I'll either use tab completion or abbreviate your nick depending on my mood.

I would never call Danielle Dani, even though its easier to spell. Dani traumatized me as a child by smacking me repeatedly with a clipboard.

Oh, and "mistah_j" as "mistah_gay"

Layouts were a way for me to express my creativity.

If you don't like it, you can take this job and shovel it.

You should add some timing to the game, or at least adjust it if you have one already (if there is one, how does it work?).

Currently no timing is in place, which is why it runs so fast on a decent PC. I won't add any timing until I get my PC back (about a week from now). The current plan is to have it run at 50fps.

I'm actually curious about the coding behind this game, even if it's rather simple for now (such as the lack of ball reappearing on paddle when you lose).

I'll release the source when the project is done, or if I drop it.

as for progress:
not much, I worked abit on the border GFX, put different colored blocks in, and got better hit detection on the blocks, I'll put another update in the next few days.

I got permission from Rage Ltd to use their music in the game, so that will be coming soon.

For now I'm going to work on a level editor and different bricktypes, that should be up soon. Editing levels with HEX sucks. Once it is feel free to make and submit any levels you want, if they don't suck too bad I'll most likely include them.

edit:
Demo 2 posted in first post. includes level editor.

1. What do you call these symbols?

Either just braces or curly braces.

2. Where do you position them in relation to the rest of the code?

if a function only has one statement, I go with
void function1() { dosomething(); } //this does something

if it has more than one statement
void function1()
{
doSomething(); //do this one thing
doSomethingelse(); //do this other thing
} //etc

I just find things easier to navigate when braces are all properly aligned.

Tetris GB is better than the DX, music wise. I would call it a good buy.

Obvious solution: Play Tetris DX but with the music off.

or just play tetris with the music on.

I've got about 25 made up right now, I re-did the graphics for the bricks:

was this better or the old style?

I don't have a car. Every vehicle here is ****. Anything I can sell I'm likely to keep, and anything I'll let go is low-value.

Punch Line: I'm ****ed.

God damnit will you quit fucking bleeping shit out.
