I can't say I agree with you on this at all. ||board devolved into a troll fest very quickly due to a total lack of enforcing any rules. I gave up and started trolling too because what else was there to do? There were not any consequences to bad behavior.

edit: Tons of threads get trashed over time, but why was this one not? Seems incongruous to me.


I'd argue the reason why "||board" didn't work is because it was asking it's core community to fundamentally alter its behavior by switching its main activity to forums rather than IRC.

Based on my time in board2's IRC channel, I don't think there's any relevance between people using IRC as opposed to using the board. I don't think you really want the main activity in IRC to be the main activity on the board, as it appears to mostly be Kawa and GreyMario sharing furry porn or talking about MLP.

Also some conversations are just better done in real time, and most IRC topics being handled when they are closer to on-topic for these forums seem better suited to that. Just my humble idler's opinion from watching KP, etc talk about things.

You might as well ask people to quit talking to each other on IM too and just go use the board.

Forums aren't really the main way people communicate productively, particularly, if they work with each other... it's a very inefficient form of communication in general.

Well I'll concede the point that IRC activity may not correlate with board activity at all. The thing with ||board was that it still looked like the old acmlm's board, but in reality was nothing like it. It was #nobodysworld but in board form, as you say.

The point I'm more trying to make about IRC is that when your staff seems more interested in IRC than promoting board activity of whatever sort*, don't expect a lot of board activity.

* development, events, actually posting of their own accord in not in response

I don't think forum posting is going anywhere in the long term but I suppose it has been supplanted somewhat by the quickfire responses of facebook / twitter. Forum posting is generally only efficient when you have many people on several timezones around the world trying to communicate publicly. Perhaps people have gotten too impatient to wait for others to actually respond to forum posts anymore.



^ basically this is why I'd assume board2 isn't super active.

Also it's a rom hacking board, I'd assume the massive amounts of activity that were on the previous board were due to the larger general community, but now that this community has been pealed back down to its rom hackers and some RPers alone more or less.....
