Don't put words in my mouth, scrub.

Well, maybe you should explain how this thread is terrible. Certainly, my assessment of the analogy given being faulty is correct. If you don't disagree with me on the points so far, then I don't see how you can view the thread as terrible.

We're not WoT buddies anymore anyway. I'm two tiers higher than you and you drag me down, bro.

That's your spoiled attitude.

I'll catch up later in the week when I'm done getting over being sick.

Doctor diagnosed it as stress and the cat is now on an inexpensive generic TCA for the next weeks til he is better integrated into the household and in better health. Thanks to everyone who posted.

Oh gee it's exactly what I told you it would be. How much did that end up costing your mom?

Actually, it came out of my pocket, as I pay for everything involving my pets. But not much, I caught my cat up on his boosters while I was there (which he needed). Medication seems to be helping a lot in relieving the stress levels, so hopefully he can start getting back to normal. The highest cost was the vet visit at $45, but he needed to go anyway for a general check up (because he hadn't been in awhile). But now all of his vaccines are caught up and he's on medication that should help turn his condition back to normal. I'll be much happier when I'm convinced it's working 100%.

blackhole and I started talking about this on AIM, so I just thought I'd bring some rough points to the thread.

He stated academia is complicit. This is true. A great deal of academia can be blamed for propagating the paywall model.

Certainly as he pointed out, CS, Physics, Mathematics are taking great strides in open journals that other fields really are struggling to catch up to.

I noted that I would actually be more accepting of the paywall model if it was more reasonably priced, like $0.99 an article. And while that's not too steep to pay for someone in the first world, when you think about researchers who live in the third world, for example, in Nigeria, where most people get by on less than $5 a day, that's too expensive.

For what it's worth, I've made a point to publish my papers where I am the first author or could make reasonable input in open journals. The only paper I am a coauthor on that isn't in an open journal, we made the PDF available on the senior author's personal/professional webpage. While this works to circumvent some of the access problem, it's a half measure. the whole idea of databases of articles is that they are 'permanently archived'. How permanently archived is a webpage managed by one person? When they die and their webspace is taken down because no one is paying to maintain it anymore, it's gone. Kaput.

It would be hard, because current freely accessible avenues of publishing are not well respected (with the exception of PLoS and its journals under it). Acta Palaeontologica Polonica has been a rising star (including preprints) though. I have high hopes for it to continue rising in prominence through the new year.

More to add on the matter:

http://svpow.wordpress.com/2012/01/13/the-obscene-profits-of-commercial-scholarly-publishers/

Here they are again: profits as a percentage of revenue for commercial STM publishers in 2010 or early 2011:

Elsevier: £724m on revenue of £2b — 36%
Springer‘s Science+Business Media: £294m on revenue of £866m — 33.9%
John Wiley & Sons: $106m on revenue of $253m — 42%
Academic division of Informa plc: £47m on revenue of £145m — 32.4%

Well, arXiv greatly benefited from Cornell's patronage giving it a more official air... perhaps a reasonably large and influential paleo/history workgroup (or multiple ones jointly) at some US university would have a shot at achieving the same with some investment of effort.

Those don't really exist. Biology workgroups do though and paleo research could easily piggyback onto that.

So perhaps...

The tweets about it are a somewhat hilarious; you can feel all the oozing rage from kids who know of no other way of doing school projects but to ctrl-c ctrl-v from Wikipedia. Perhaps it will also be an educational experience to them. 10/10, Jimmy.

This perfectly illustrates what I like about when "desperate measures" are taken on the internet.

Though it's a bit worrying at the same time. It indicates that Wikipedia could probably push any legislation it wants simply by threatening to cut off access to their site.

Really? I saw it more as most people are aggravated by short term nuisances and don't care about the big picture at all.

they should close down for a full week.

This site CANNOT die. I may have not been as active as I have been before, due to a lot of things, but even with the "cliquiness" of some, that hasn't stopped me from making friends and pushing me to work on my hack. I have to personally thank QC and zbyte with helping me get started. I am still working on it, but other priorities have taken precedence. Work and school. But, when i have free time, I hop on Skype and bug QC for help(and I actually need some at the moment--will be skyping you later....stupid airship level).

the haters are gone, feel free to post freely. irc has been cleaned up.

we miss you shofizzle.

we will have an epic picnic one day once again.

SWIM considered checking these out but couldn't find enough information on studies done so backed off, not really willing to risk being a guinea pig in SWIM's current state.

I feel glad SWIM didn't do that though if you aren't reporting any real differences while taking them.

A Natchez, Mississippi man was awakened by a loud sound. Thinking someone was trying to break into his home be grabbed his .357 Magnum handgun, cocked the gun, and went to investigate. According to police, as the man approached the kitchen he could still hear a noise and became nervous and unintentionally discharged the gun. He shot himself in the right foot near his pinkie toe.
The man was able to drive himself to the hospital. His condition has not been released.

Accidental self injury or death and injury or even death to others happen every day due to improper use of guns in the US. Why do people who own guns seem to have so much trouble keeping them safely? Or ... why do we permit people who seem to have a rather low IQ and irresponsible habits the right to bear arms?

do we need more conditions and regulations around gun ownership?

let's discuss.

My favorite was probably United Offensive. The larger maps and addition of vehicles was pretty fun. Also not a big fan of the regenerating health in the later games (amongst other things).

I like arena shooters, and Unreal Tournament has always been my favorite. I should probably give TF2 another try, since the UT population is pretty small.

TF2 is free so it can't possibly hurt. A lot of my online friends grabbed TF2 after it came out as F2P and I actually played it a lot more often since there were more people online.

This is your classic difficult discussion. I would agree that some people who do have a gun probably shouldn't. But then there's also the whole 2nd amendment right thing. I would be all for mandatory training sessions for gun owners. Maybe once every few months or so, you have to retake a safety training course and an actual shooting course or something.

Amendments can be repealed or altered by subsequent amendments, so it's not like they are fixed forever. They can also be changed through judicial rulings that would alter their interpretation without having to legislatively alter the literal text.

The other problem is that the second amendment's original intent seems to be designed around bearing arms as part of a militia unit to repeal foreign invaders and insurgencies, though recent Supreme Court decisions have extended it for the purpose of home defense.

The type of guns that are universally agreed through the US by state and city ordinances are adequate for home defense but some states/cities permit the ownership of assault rifles which are a little extreme for a home invasion scenario.

I agree that gun owners should basically need to take an extended mandatory training session and subsequent retrainings every year (perhaps 2-3x a year).

I mentioned assault rifles but to be fair... most accidental shootings seem to occur with handguns while an individual is 'cleaning' the weapon and the firearm discharges....so perhaps these individuals would have benefited from remedial training...

As the title suggests, I was wondering how others here feel about nootropic drugs like piracetam. About a month ago, after I read a rave review for the stuff, I purchased 100 grams of the stuff to try out. Using the capsuling machine I was given for Christmas, I've capped a series of approximately one gram servings, that I have been taking daily for the past couple of weeks.

So far, I haven't experienced much of the added mental clarity people tend to attribute to it. I have noticed a slightly increased desire to solve mathematical and logic problems, and an increased ability tune out distractions, but that's about it. So far, I don't plan to purchase more when my supply runs out, but that may change yet.

So, what have you guys heard/read/experienced with nootropics?

http://www.drugs-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=108415

Be very carefull of which drugs you take or test, remember nothing will ever be permanent, and there is a negative side to most drugs on the market or being studied closely by the people who made the stuff.

I don't get this statement about nothing being permanent. It is very possible to have a drug interaction that could lead to permanent neurological damage...

Community colleges won't let you in until you're 21? That's odd. I was 18 when I first went to a community college. Heck, I was 18 when I first went to university (had to drop out to go to community college due to my shrinking financial situation. As was said earlier, it's not the most glamorous form of school, but it certainly gets the job done a lot cheaper.)
