Hehe, it was some sort of miracle that I could keep the adrenaline so high for such long time

If compatibility was the main issue, then Windows XP is the way to go. Vista is still under "testing"... sort of "public beta" (like in MMORPG) where they are still collecting feedback from users worldwide (although they claimed it was completed... *coughcompatibilitycough* ). Until they release a service pack for it, better stand away from Vista for now
However, I had been using Vista for 3 months; nothing funky happening and the installation went on easily as my lappie manufacturer (Asus) provided all the latest driver for it. And I had helped my friend to install it on her desktop as well, but some driver issue on the soundcard though
Anyway, for me, I'm still sticking with XP on my desktop, since I won't want to have any compatibiliy issues with software (especially games! )...
OT: I'm not a M$ fanboy (err... girl?) but then again, Mac doesn't seems appealing to me. I like the appearance/design of it gadgets, but when comes to detailed specs of a computer, Mac just doesn't worth the price. For the same price, I could get a better PC specs. ____________________
