Right, the next release is ready!

Some highlights from version 3.0:

- All level layouts edited (some complete; others pending)
- Each character now has a unique set of moves (though Sonic and Shadow share homing attack)
- Most levels (not all) have a small intro, ala S3K, where they perform some sort of action when starting the level. i.e, running in from the left.
- Shitload of music edits
- There is now a "preferences" screen, where you can customize certain aspects of the game (suggestions are welcome)
- Cheat codes have been changed - figuring them out will grant you access to a new, special level select (which is a bit buggy - just don't hit left/right on zone selections =P)
- "Original Mode" allows you to play the original levels from Sonic the Hedgehog, using all of the additions from Sonic Megamix (such as bugfixes, moves, preferences, etc). There is also a seperate save slot for a character's original mode.
- Title screen demos have been edited. Credits demos have not.
- Super forms have been added.
- Elemental shields, ala S3K, have been added.
- Credits have been edited; each character has a unique end pose on the ending sequence.
- Various other changes. See the Wiki page for more info.

This is, pending future changes, considered a "complete" release. Future changes are planned, but not assured. More information can be found on the Manual/Wiki page, located here: http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_1_Megamix

Comments and suggestions are entirely welcome. Bugfix releases are entirely possible, so if you find what could be considered a vital "bug" (and not, say, an error from using debug mode), it may be fixed in a future bugfix release (though personally I'd like to avoid making too many of these).

I actually was on the prototype board that was made before the original, where I help Acmlm test it out with other EoFF members. Why is there two boards for Acmlm now? I return here while searching for strange romhacks to play for a thread at Something Awful.

Does it have anything to do with Sonic Megamix? I just recently posted it there.

This is awesome. It's comedic, and it's technically impressive. I love the intentionally spoofy music, it's awesome - it's like those commercials you see with a clearly recognizable tune, but cheaply changed as to avoid getting sued. It's classic! XD

Also, the majority of you suck for not being able to take a joke hack. I think the "eat my shit" blocks were totally within context, especially considering the whole premise of the hack (I mean, come on, it IS Borat). And overlooking all that, it's obvious he's putting work into it - ASM edits, music edits, nice art edits, level design, the works. I just think it's extremely shallow to expect some sort of undebatable standard from people when they create a hack. If someone wants to make a joke hack, that's fine - if it sucks, we bash it for sucking. If, in this case, it DOESN'T suck, and there's obvious effort and comedic value in it, I see no reason why it should be bashed simply for being a joke hack.

You all know damn well if I put Tina in Sonic 1 or something it'd be hilarious and awesome. Not everyone has to follow a single type of humor though (ie, it shouldn't be reduced to injokes).

Only on this forum can people leave over HOW A FUCKING FORUM IS CODED. For fucks sake, it's a message board, implement whatever's more optimized and don't touch the shit again till it's broke. They work the same, don't they?

blackhole hosts this board for free, so I think if you're running code on his server, and his is more optimized, and has a lighter load ON HIS SERVER, then I think it's entirely fair for his method to be implemented. Mind you, this doesn't mean he has control over how the board is run, but he has the right to say what kind of code he wants run on his server.

Xkeeper, your method is more human-readable, but what does it do? It adds a whole new table, adding more clutter to sift through when that clutter does not need to exist. This may be a viable method for yourself, but what about the server? As a general rule, if I wanted to look at previous edits of a post, I'd make something like "edithistory.php." And, by all means, regardless of its implementation, wouldn't this script display the same exact data?

When you implement features, you want to be as optimized as possible. If blackhole's implementation is more optimized from a coding perspective, then that should be implemented, and you should write said edit history viewing script. Besides that, it's clear that you understand both methods sufficiently - when you have a script that interprets the data for you, it doesn't really MATTER how it looks when it's stored in the SQL tables, as long as it operates as fast as it possibly can.

Secondly (and this is sort of unrelated), Xkeeper, this is just something I've noticed, but you need to show a bit more respect to your server admins. I'm not saying ||bass was some innocent dude who did nothing and randomly decided to take over the old boards, but I think the disrespect you show for your server admins really has a lot to do with the arguments that keep stirring up, and eventually causing something rash to happen. If you want to be your own server admin, then get your own server and host yourself, but until then, you NEED to listen to the people who keep this site on the internet. I'm not big on your whole situation, but from what I can see, nobody respects anybody over the stupidest goddamn things.

Seriously, this should be far from an issue. If blackhole starts randomly banning people and fucking with the site as he pleases randomly, then you have grounds to be angry, but I really don't see why blackhole can't choose what method is better for his server, especially when it's functionally the same.

Awesome, it uses actual tabs in it. The IPB code tag converts tabs to multiple space, which is by far the most counterproductive and retarded thing ever.

I'd say it's one part luck, and one part "feeling". When you get accustomed to how data is stored in a ROM, you can more or less "see" patterns in data, and mangle the numbers accordingly. For example, as long as you know how many bytes long a pointer is, you can quite easily detect a pointer table...

But yes, there's a big part of luck, as ROM corruption is mostly random by nature...

This is absolutely true. Learning and understanding patterns is key to becoming a good reverse engineer. For example, I can find everything relating to music in a Genesis game using the SMPS sound engine based on just two bytes. Two bytes! I think that's pretty damn good if you ask me. =P

It's always good to find what's consistent in a type of data, and look for that. Chances are, you'll be able to find any kind of that same data in any other game you need to from that point on. It's pretty trippy.
