Yeesh, making simfiles is hard.

(Actually, I managed to take this pile of shit and through some experimentation, make it at least playable [Though not perfect]. Changed some of the steps and actually gave it Light/Standard difficulties while I was at it). If anyone wants the beta version of what I did (Like I said, syncing's a bit off, and I want to make some changes to the Standard), I'll be on AIM for the next hour or so at XBOX IS TEH ROAD.

Actually syncing it better than this may be difficult, as the MP3 (Well, OGG now) file doesn't really have any good identifying points after about 12 measures.

Kles: Just do what all the elite arrowsmashers do and ignore mines. Whether you triggered them or not, doesn't matter, just ignore it for scoring purposes.

Hmm.

On one hand, the American Gladiators theme is actually quite short (48 seconds to be exact), meaning actually making stepcharts for it shouldn't be bad.

On the other hand...it's freaking SHORT. I may actually end up looping most of it again, depending on how things go.

This stepchart making thing is fun.

Now do it on pad rofl.

ALSO: Stepmakers out there, have you had any experience with this? How's it compare with the SM3.9 editor? In looking at the screenshot, I see a waveform viewer overlaid on the editor, which seems like it'd be pretty damn useful.

Any particular reason for that? If nothing else, I'd figure it'd be helpful for figuring out syncing of stuff.

Well...

For better or worse, I made the leap and submitted a simfile to BemaniStyle.

Master of Water (Lagoon Castle), from the game Lagoon (NOT Bahamut Lagoon). Designed for pad.
Light- 2
Standard- 6
Heavy- 8

Let me know what you think.

Okay, read your comments. Let's see.

Thanks for "not a bad start", first of all. I assume most starts are, um, bad. So yeah.

I'm still completely artistically retarded, but I'll try and come up with a background/better banner for whatever I do next. I found paint.net yesterday. Not quite as full-featured as Photoshop, but it should do for my abilities.

As for the steps themselves, like I said with one of the files I didn't release, it doesn't compensate for being offsync by using random 32nds or 48ths, which puts it ahead of most first-time submissions. As far as the offset goes, I don't remember if I did that accidentally when hitting random F keys trying to remember which set was tempo, or if it was a natural product of my global offset in SM, but I'll note it for next time. Flow-wise, I wanted to make sure the whole thing could be done alternating feet without a problem, and I think I accomplished that.

Difficulty-wise, maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places, but it seems to me that most of the focus is on OMG HARDER LONGER STREAM FASTER TEMPO!! and there's not enough out there for the casual player, or the person who likes the game but for whatever reason never progressed to AAAing tens or quadstarring 12s or whatnot. So I definitely plan to try and do stuff that has a full difficulty spectrum.

My personal feelings on it aside--I really don't have a strong opinion on it one way or the other, having never played it--I agree with Hiryuu that the author of the game merely did so for attention. Therefore, if you really want to "send a message" to him or whatever, the best thing to do would be to judge it merely on its merits as a game (I understand that, even removing the subject matter and treating it as a generic FPS, it's not a very good game in any regard). "Nope, sorry, not offensive, and not even a very good game besides".

Hey SWR, what theme is that, and does it come with different arrow noteskins? I installed and then uninstalled Groove 2.2 on my SM awhile back, and it's basically busted now (Flat is one of the few noteskins that actually works). Oops.

Lol hlep lol.

EDIT: I tried GIMP awhile back. Pretty well-featured, but clearly not Windows native. Stuff may have changed since I last tried it, though.

Yeah, Techno Fiend looks nothing like that (But is pretty cool nonetheless).

Erm, so how would I go about wiping the noteskin folder and getting it back to some sort of default? I put some new skins in the folder, and now I can select Flat (Which at least works), and...that's it, actually.

EDIT: Okay, uninstalling and reinstalling stepmania seems to have done the trick.

Hey, here's a question. The little spinny things that indicate the mix when you pick a song. I know it goes in the CD Title line of the SM file, but does it have to be included in every file I do, or can I put them all in a folder, offer that for download, and just have the picture in the mail folder and then absolute link to it in every file in the pack?

Did that make any sense?

I got fourth place in a DDR tournament today. Don't ask me how (I'm not being modest, I literally DON'T KNOW what scoring system they used to arrive at the results they did).

In any event, my prize was the new Linkin Park CD and some stickers. Um, yay?

A sane tournament would have done that. This was not a sane tournament.

It was cumulative for three songs. Cumulative what, I couldn't possibly tell you, though someone said Perfects+Greats+Goods (?!?), which I guess makes sense given the results.

Oh well. I'll take it either way.

Goddamn you Nobuo Uematsu.

See, I'm working on simming some stuff for my girlfriend's brother's birthday coming up. After the debacle which was my attempt at the American Gladiators theme, I decide "Okay, I'll do some video game stuff. That'll be easy, they'll all have one constant tempo which will eliminate most of my worries."

I get through a couple files like this with no problem--F-Zero Big Blue and Yoshi's Stage from Tetris Attack--...and then run into Zeromus from Final Fantasy IV. The song I mean.

Christ, this thing has a different tempo like every freakin' measure. The good news is that definable "1" points are a bit easier to come by here than they were for the AG theme, but that doesn't make it any less annoying.

Hmm. Interesting. I just hear 4/4 the whole way through, except for some triplet stuff right near the end.

Oh well, either way, I think I have all the tempos I need now.

I tried the first one on keyboard.

I FAIL IT! MY SKILL IS NOT ENOUGH!

This tells me that I'm inherently unqualified to judge keyboard sims.

Anything that gets rid of S & F is probably a good thing in the long run, even if I missed it.

Somewhat ironically, a Pump is by far the closest dance game to me, yet I've ever actually played it.

Anyway, made some more simfiles. You can get the entire pack of them from this link. Info on the songs is here.

I've said before that it's almost like Sony is TRYING to lose this latest round of the console wars. This merely confirms that thought.

Hiryuu: Maybe Sony are in it for "the long haul", whatever that may be, but given their short-to-medium-term decisions (Say, anything after the release of the PSP), I honestly don't see how anyone BUT fanboys can continue to support them at present. :\

I played in a silly little tournament yesterday. Did horribly. You can read about the experience here.

By the way, did anyone download that simfile pack I mentioned on the last page?
