How'd you make that image? Photoshop? Looks kinda like one I experiment with a few days ago. Since you're a graphical master, I'll follow your example Here's another update:

I toned down the spray-tan-orange buttes in the FG, nearly killed the shadowing around the BG edges, and overall tried to match Palette 0 for the original BG in this level (see Level 104 in a clean SMW ROM). I also tweaked the grass in both. Not perfect, a little blue maybe, but at least the distance looks right now:

EDIT: Dammit! It looks kinda bluish green on my other 'puter but a bit yellow on my internet-enabled one. However it looks to you, feel free to comment

And JJ, I think you've finally broken my hacker's block for the art style of Level 105 Something like "misty dawn over Spirit Isle" looks really cool as an intro level. Super-early screenie ahead!

I took this right out of LM cause I haven't even started to design the level itself. Anyways, everything you see there is BG. As for mist, it'll take some screwing around with ExGFX (base a file on the Ghost House tileset but put grassland GFX into it so it still thinks I've loaded tileset 5 or D).

As you can see I'm kinda going for a darkish, very early morning look, like the sun has just started to rise. Comments?

Are you talking about DW:TLC? AFAIK it's the only SMW hack that requires expansion to work right. If you DL'd the official archive from Fu's site (R.I.P. Panicus ) or SMWcentral, select a CLEAN ROM (you should be able to remember this rule in your sleep), use Lunar Expand (included in the .zip) and expand the ROM to a 48Mbit ExHiROM (the upper-right option). THEN use LIPS.

Source: The handy-dandy readme included with the .zip.

For all other hacks:
LIPS is easy to use, just place it in the same directory as the ROM you plan to patch (?) If you're using XP, your comp should now recognize IPS patches as a known file type (make sure you set them to open with Lunar IPS under "properties).

Double-click on the IPS patch you want to use and select a CLEAN (I cannot stress this enough) copy of the SMW ROM in the window that appears. If you did it right, it should tell you "The file was successfully patched!" Now enjoy your hack!

This worked for me, if you're still having problems just double-check that you've set up LIPS (your comp recognizes IPS patches) and that the ROM is clean. Use the Clean ROM verifier on SMWcentral to be sure.

Hope this helps...

Tit for tat Many of my levels have a Greek naming theme, actually:

Proteus=shapeshifting god (Proteus Woods has an illusion feel as you go through pipes that take you random places)

Anemos=Wind (my sky world will have a windy level called Anemos Causeway, kinda like Gusty Glade from DKC2)

Kaustos=Burning (my fire/volcano world will be called Kaustos Island)

Gaia=Earth (Gaia Bridge leads to the mountain world where the Earth Element Temple is)

The levels in the Star World (called the Nexus) are named with Greek letters (see old thread for more)

There's more, but that's all I can reveal for now

Off topic: Golden Sun owns your mom's soul

Nice. Wii will rock you

I'm having the actual party this weekend with family and all, and maybe I'll have a bit of hack progress for you all by then.

Kinda hard up for news here, just taking it easy and juggling phone calls from family and stuff.

Ever played Airwolf for the NES? It's based on a (kinda popular, actually) TV series from the 80s and had a few cool looking graphics (it was pretty ugly for the most part) and stuff with some realistic cockpit views. But one time when you get briefed for a mission, the map screen suddenly cuts to this demon-wolf-face thing!! Scary as hell, especially since it looks so crude with the 8-bit effects. Here's a pic:

Yeesh, that thing's freaky. Reminds me of the scenes in The Exorcist where they flash those faces between scenes (as the site's webmaster said). And I've never played this game, so I guess I'm just giving you a really long-winded link to this fansite:

Welcome to the forum This is a common problem with first-time hackers. Not saying you're a n00b, just that you're learning the ropes of LM.

What you've got here is a bad BG Init position. It's either too high or too low, so "animated tile garbage" (really just tile data inserted by the game) shows up onscreen.

Source: LM Help File (newbs try to read it, n00bs don't )

Is the pipe high, low, or in the middle of the screen? Check the BG Init position and try to eyeball the four options into quarters of the screen. Match the pipe entrance to that particular "quarter". If you're close enough, it should look fine.

I guess my motto is "Educate the newbs, and eradicate the n00bs". Or send them off to raise hell on ||board or SMWcentral instead

Long live America

*whistle, bang, zang, BOOM, BAM, scream, cheering*

This 4th, quite frankly, is my worst one ever I live in California, where the aerial stuff is illegal, and I'm tired of the so-called "safe and sane" stuff. Safe and lame would be a better term The nearest seller of the hardcore items is a 5-hour drive from here--Pahrump, Nevada.

Don't get me wrong, I love fireworks and think they should be legal everywhere except major cities, but this year all I did was stay home, have a boring little barbecue with only the grandparents over, and tried to watch the nearest fireworks display from my balcony--10 miles away x_X

Oh well, there's always next year

Hey FP, in case you don't remember I'm a big fan of your art and level design style. I've kinda been taking a break from SMW hacking (I do it alot, I believe in having a life ) but I gotta say, you're proof that a great hack can come out of nothing more than custom palettes, a few GFX edits, and creative and puzzling level design.

Not to mention a few ASM pwnages. Like, HOW IN THE HELL DID YOU MAKE 5 SWITCH PALACES!?!? Awesome.

As for the Cyan !-blocks, is anything inside them? I'm guessing a star, if anything. Or some awesome custom powerup or even Cyan Yoshi.

As for the rest of your GFX, I kinda have a love-hate relationship with the square corners. They don't make much sense underwater or in the natural "koopa-vine" terrain with the dark chocolate soil

Oh, and you've got some serious perspective issues with the Yoshi levels like the Beachhouse. Reducing contrast or adding some sharper shading on the BG helps push it away from the FG. Also, your square ledges look very flat in some areas. Are you going for a "cutout" look?

As for some SS's not shown--I've seen some of your work on SMWcentral (ph33r t3h BOOM!) and I really like the invincible spike run in the "red castle". Reminds me of Level 6-2 in YI...frantic, flaming action!

Nice pipe mazes too. Some people hate them, but that's what savestates were made for. Not that I believe in savestates, though.
*coughcircularreasoningcough*

Keep it up! Been waiting for this hack that changes names and plot themes every 3 months or so. I guess sometimes, evolution beats revolution
EDIT: Erm, 10-day bump!

...the island's ecosystem being in danger could be a nice direction to go. I hadn't really planned on doing any industrial areas, but I'll consider your example now.
When I read this, I instantly thought of Kremkroc Industries, Inc. in Donkey Kong Country. Since you've already used DKC2 as inspiration, you could probably look at that world for ideas.

Make that 2 An industrial zone sounds like a cool idea for a final world or something. According to the old thread, Icy wanted to make a cave/glacier world and a volcanic world in addition to the themes we've got now. That leaves 1 of the 5 main worlds with an open theme--and a DKC-inspired industrial wasteland sounds freakin' awesome.

A Poison Pond-inspired toxic lake could have a really short time limit and the only way to survive would be to go through pipes to safe rooms, resetting the timer. Modified Layer 3-mist would be great to simulate murky water like in the DKC version. And since you're such a wizard at ExGFX, it should be just a small bump in the road to make an industrial tileset. Make it really ominous and evil-looking--atmosphere is the order of the day Nice contrast to the tropical, "countryside", prehistoric atmosphere of the rest of the game.

The plot so far seems like a nice twist--Jurassic Park in reverse, anyone?? I'm dying to see more. Kaboomba would be great for factory levels, and if you're willing to get really, really, REALLY overboard with ASM and GFX, you could make a section of that world where you PLAY AS DON-DON. He should move a bit slower, not jump as high, but be able to take one more hit than Mario and have permanent fireballs or something. (See a few posts down for the idea of making Don-Don a bigger part of the plot)

Keep it up!

Hmm, never tried it before, sounds cool! Assuming I have enough time on my hands this weekend I'd be willing to give it a shot. It's good practice for the time when I start fine-tuning my hack...

Keep me posted!

Nice! If only Japanese weren't so friggan hard to learn x_X
Nihongo de hanashimasu ka??

I saw Jonwil on the board a few months back so is there any chance he might release a new version of Blocktool? Either that or this is his current project, leaked out and translated into japanese so most of us gaijin hackers can't use it

I'm 19 too So Alastor, you're not the only one

(19 is the sucky age: not 18, yet not 20 or 21. Jinsei's comment kinda fits, you're definitely not a child, yet it's hard to say you're still a "teenager", and not quite an adult either)

Looks fun! Glad to see you making some levels that fly beyond the n00bish stuff you used to crank out in your first few hacks. Nice use of Layer 2 Did you use ASM to make Layer 3 tides act like lava, or does the rapid smash effect make it seem like the lava scrolls up the screen with you? If it's a glitch, please fix it if you can!

Reminds me a little of Lead Egg Castle from Joshua's Treasure Hunt hack. Is that the level you had in mind? [99% sure it's not]

That custom song is AWESOME, even if it sounds a bit...circus-ish I know I've heard it before...is it game music or some real song with a name?

Keep it up!

::ALERT ALERT ALERT::

Well...you sorta stole my idea I'm using in my hack. I may be on an extended hiatus from ROM hacking, but that doesn't mean I like to see my ideas ripped from the silicon seas of board2 and marginally tweaked for all to see. Elemental temples?? Read my topic

End of rant, your hack looks pretty good. No really, I've never had anything against you, Supertails. Nice rips and palette choices. They say imitation is the best form of flattery...I've gotta admit not many hacks have an "elemental" theme. I guess inspiration cuts both ways: when I start working on my hack again, maybe you'll see some cues from this hack. Whatever...
