Besides Sun, the only place I know that solaris is being used is at UC Berkeley, in the computer science department. Sun donated a lot of hardware for instructional use. As a result, the department is "obligated" (i.g. required) to use Solaris on those machines.
Solaris is another unix-based OS with Sun's personal tweaks to UNIX that make it ideal for using a computer as a terminal server. |

Hopefully, the data on your NTFS drive was set to allow anyone to read it. If that isn't the case, then you might not be able to get your data. |

the other thing you can try to do is to type in an IP address, instead of domain name to see if things work. This board's IP address is 213.239.193.176 |

i think i would start by removing all the text in the background--i'm surprised you can even read the names of everything there to begin with.

Posted by Xenesis i know, i just noticed that i lost it just now. So, I guess it is going to take me decades to get it back i find it unfair that we have to lose custom titles at the expense of ranks but meh, no one is going to care about my opinion anyways. Oh, and I could swear I had more posts... |

Will merging subforums introduce more activity? Why do something if it won't help rectify the problem? |

When I posted without logging in, and I entered my password incorrectly, it says I couldn't post in a restricted forum. Shouldn't it say that I have a bad username or password? |

I use Gentoo because I really wanted to streamline my system as much as I can. In Gentoo, the primary way to install something is to compile it and put in the features you will be using. One of the reasons why I didn't use Debian or Ubuntu is because you might have programs that come with features that you'd never be using. For example, if you never are going to do anything with IPv6 or XML, why install it? Gentoo gives you that control.
However, Gentoo is about as deep as you can go when it comes to diving into Linux. Although, I've heard Slackware is about as gung-ho as you can get. So, Ubuntu and Debian are good choices. ---- I would have to agree with bh89 that configuring the kernel to talk to your hardware is hit or miss, if you want the leanest kernel possible. Ubuntu handles this situation by compiling everything, similar to Windows approach. Even then, you cannot really have too new hardware. Intel is quite good at providing linux drivers. I did not have much trouble getting Intel video cards to work to their full capacity. ---- One of my major annoyances with Linux are things that I take for granted in Windows are still work in progress in Linux. For example, hibernation and standby don't quite work the same way from what I was familiar with in windows. Also, if you want to get something to work, you have to delve through a lot of forum posts to find the answer to your question or issue. So with linux, you need to have a lot of patience. Windows has a plethora of issues, but sometimes I rather have those issues than try to tackle some of the things I've run into on Linux. |

Posted by AilureSo, you are staying that if I put a computer into standby, when i turn it on again, it restores my state? instead of just rebooting? if so, i need to mess with my settings with hibernation, one has a choice between swap partition or a swapfile |

By windows directories, you mean folders that you can see in windows? It depends on the file system used in Windows and where these folders are (on the same computer or on another computer).
If they are on the same computer, then you will need to make sure the kernel comes with support to read FAT/FAT32 or NTFS file systems. Then, you need to mount the drive using the mount command. You will need to know specifically which hard drive these folders are on (/dev/sda, /dev/hda, etc.) Be warned that NTFS is safe to read from linux but writing to an NTFS drive from linux is still underdevelopment, even though it has been developed quite nicely. If the folders you are reading are on another computer, you will need to install samba. As for mp3 plugin, what do you want to do? You just want to play your music? |

In other words, it will not make your downloads faster significantly, if faster at all. It may make a difference if your are downloading on a corporate/university connection (10Mbps+), but a 6Mbps or less won't do anything. The only thing it assures you is that you will have enough space to finish your download and avoid the "Out of [HD space]" errors. |

That feature isn't lost yet.
1) Click on the office button, (the big button on the upper left) and click on "Word Options" at the bottom of the menu that pops up 2) Select "Advanced" on the left 3) Scroll down to "Display" section and find the option that says "Show all windows in the Taskbar". Uncheck to disable that functionality 4) When you open multiple docs, they should all now be in one window. If you want to switch between them, either Ctrl+Tab or go to View Tab on the ribbon and use the "Switch Windows" button on the far right of that tab. |
