Are you (as in the "thinking entity" composed of memes in Dawkins' sense) be perfectly fine with acting as a docile servant to the lowly needs of your essentially animal body (as in the "biological entity" composed of genes, the proteins synthesized from them and the structures they form)?

I think this is about the most awesome points delivering decision he could have met in the situation he was. Bonus points for not actually letting himself get caught.

The universal method regardless of the console used would be, I suppose,
(1) finding out how your particular ROM is mapped (i.e. how offsets in the ROM file correspond to offsets the emulated CPU "sees" - depending on the console, this could be trivial, a bit of trial-and-error or considerably hard to do without trying to tap on how the emulator loads it)
(2) calculating the "real" offset of the text you found (i.e. in a headered SNES LoROM image, $83A2 in the ROM image would correspond to $01:81A2)
(3) from the word order etc. of the machine you are working on, determine a viable byte representation of the address you obtained (this might not work unconditionally if addresses aren't stored in one piece or you have a "complex" system like on the SNES - try looking for lower bytes of the address only in that case)
(4) search the ROM for said representation
(5) for any match, see if the data around it looks like pointers too; if it does, calculate back to ROM image addresses and see if they point at text too - if they do, you found your pointer table.

For N64 mappings, you best consult somebody who's actually worked on hacking with that console; apart from that, there are no parts in my explanation that have anything to do with hacking know-how (apart from, perhaps, "having the eye" for pointers in the immediate area of some offset); it's all plain arithmetics.

I think I share that quality of yours... to the point of easily pretending to be a completely different person to every more or less distinct set of acquaintances of mine. (That, incidentally, is the reason I try to avoid linking up the separate groups or hand out information that would allow people to cross the boundaries)

Oh, I also get this strange warm feeling inside when I see two people arguing.

As for myself, I think that I can do or learn to do pretty much everything to a certain extent but will never become really good at anything.

The rationale behind taking in the Fraxy community so readily was in part that the spirit of the whole Fraxy modding scene is considerably similar to ROM hacking, so I would hardly deem those threads "unrelated".

But yeah, I agree that we could use more ROM Hacking related discussion around here. It's a shame to see projects like ToS practically dead/starved out of contributions.

How's the Frontpage "getting old"?

If the sound quality is half acceptable, I'm so getting an MP3 player that supports Rockbox.

Seriously though, I wonder if they managed to write up a half decent SPC emulation core. As far as I know, SNESAPU isn't exactly portable by design, and while I'm not sure about libopenspc, its quality is inferior anyway.
