Several times,

Have you ever created a thread that got more than 200 replies?

Yes, I ran into a bicycle when crossing the street in extreme haste.

Have you ever skipped school without a valid reason (i.e. to avoid exams or whatever)?

While I find it a good thing that more YI hacks are in the works, the levels in your screens look a tad bland. Try adding more diversity into them to make them look more interesting. (Plants, background, decoration like that mostly)

Breaking the RO2 packet encryption for Janus, if that counts. Else, no.

(Ailure: rename it back? I get the impression somebody is liking the rename thread function a tad too much here anyway)

Have you ever stayed up for 48 hours straight without any sleep?

What Eggvine version are you using, and could you provide the faulty ROM/an IPS of it for reference's sake?

Smallhacker raises a valid point there... I'll try to answer anyway...

1. Assuming the graphics are uncompressed, you'd just have to look through the ROM with an appropriate tool like YY-CHR in SNES 4bpp mode, find the graphics and replace them. Well, plus the palettes, that is.
2. Learn 65c816 assembly, figure out how stage loading is done, add stages.
3. Find the raw BRR (9/16 scale CBR lossy compression for samples used in the SPC700's DSP) data for the voice clips in the ROM, use some BRR encoder (I think kode54 wrote a foobar2000 export filter that worked) and replace the data.
4. Sounds like those are "prerendered" graphics. Apply #1.
5. If the game uses N-SPC (judging from its release date, it definitively won't be beta N-SPC, for which some 2channel based SMW hackers wrote a MIDI import filter), you are probably best off by resequencing it yourself, either waiting for Solar Soundtrack or doing so in a hex editor using one of those N-SPC format descriptions that float around the internet occasionally. Being (I think) the only one who actively works on the N-SPC format anymore, I can tell you I'm not planning on MIDI import.

Without a header, the editor should never have successfully loaded it and let you edit anything reasonable to begin with...

Well, I don't know how similar they are due to lack of off-hand knowledge on SMW, but similar data formats on sequel games aren't exactly an unexpected thing... now if YI's graphics/tile behaviour system is similar to SMW's Map16 stuff as well, it shouldn't be too hard to implement a graphical editor not requiring manually extracted data to operate.
In the end, though, I think SMW hacking will prevail in popularity anyway, both due to the progress that has been done on it and the general flexibility of the SMW engine (which I presume to surpass YI's) and its higher closeness to "stock platformers" which allows for hacks that seem very varied... YI's gameplay and graphical style practically pushes itself on every hack made of it, making it, in the long run, seem like nothing more than some kind of expansion to the original game. I would both be very surprised and readily hand out a whole box of internet cookies if somebody actually succeeded in making an YI hack retaining none of YI's "scribbling kids" visual or gameplay style that doesn't suck...

The arrangement of that SMRPG song appears nicely done... did you do it yourself or just grab it from somewhere around sm4wiki/2ch?

Who is that friend of yours? You probably could count the people capable of customizing bosses in the English-language part of the SMW hacking community with your ten fingers (and without using binary)...

Also, the level you use it in definitively needs more forest graphics.

Very nice! Is this limited to editing the graphics or can it be used to edit the tiles' behaviour (collision, level assignment, whatever... I haven't ever played the game so I don't know what comes into question ) as well?

So I ran into this hack earlier while looking for some other Rockman2 (NES Megaman 2 in the Japanese version, somewhat different so named distinctly here) hack Valcion asked me to look out for (unfortunately, I failed to find that one ). Unfortunately, I don't remember where I picked it up or what the context was anymore, or even if it's a final version, because I had to switch machines quickly... anyway, it's a quite very nice, but insanely hard hack of said game; all the graphics and music appear to be changed (for the better, I think, not that the original music in the game wasn't already awesome), so I thought I might as well share it with you (since those Japanese hacks otherwise hardly ever get known over here if they aren't ran into and hyped like those SMW hacks).

The last time a hack demo left me this impressed was SMO, and I hadn't seen SMO before back then.

To not leave you with nothing more than a useless "omgawesome" comment, there were a few points that, I thought, needed improvement.
- The cave BG. Too repetitive and simplistic.
- Aya's arm movement while walking seemed too jagged.
- The water coming out of the vertical facing down pipes looked weird/out of place.
- Illogical FG/BG relationship between the rain and the hills in the level before the castle. The hills appear behind the sprite but are not covered by rain, while the sprite is.
- The pipe at the right end of said level (the rainy one, if the above description was ambiguous) behaved in a weird way. I could jump halfways into it, and a shell thrown at it descended straight down at its border rather than bouncing back.
- It's sorts of weird how Aya quickly starts running considerably faster than her fireballs move.

But yeah...

Age does not matter, nor is it a valid excuse.

As much as "qft" is frowned upon... I feel bound to quote that for truth.

mario648: As Smallhacker said, being of a low age isn't an excuse for breaking rules or not exercising common sense when posting. Either way, it might be a good thing for you to realize that it's not the answers to the questions that you ask us that bring you closer to becoming a good ROM hacker... only the answers to the questions that you ask yourself. In other words, learn to solve problems on your own because that's, well, what ROM hacking condenses down to from an abstract point of view.

boingboingsplat: My first visits to the tubes were around that age too, and I can well imagine having been similarly annoying as this specimen back then... but yeah, the more interesting question is how he found his way here.

while I don't honestly see why anyone should give a flying shit about graphics
Hey not everyone likes to see games looking like the last generation. If graphics never improved, we'd have shitty 12x12 antialiased textures like in the N64. Some people like eyecandy. Get the fuck over it.

If wanking to polygons hadn't become a fad, we wouldn't have had shitty 12x12 antialiased textures like in the N64. Instead, we actually might have gotten a solid full-colour RGBA rendering console with graphical abilities that modern-day consoles are just barely starting to match as an accidental byproduct of bloom and 8xAA.
Before the like last 3 years, people were unable to make 3D games that don't look like shit. The fact they still tried gave us 8 wasted years of gaming history.

You first generation oldbies just wind up not getting positions because you never flag
yourself as eligible for them.

And in some 500 years, nobody is going to care if you joined 3 years earlier or later~
