Yeah, someone managed to get into my account (I have some theories as to how, but quite disconcertingly nothing conclusive yet) and tried to leverage it to gain more access (failed to do anything beyond intermittently screwing up the layout by crapping up the PoRA box, as far as I can tell).

Also, ROM hacks were always kind of the point of this board. Everything else is just an overgrown appendix built to contain spillout in days of greater abundance anyway.

I delete spam when I see it, which isn't always.

Pretty sure nobody got DB access. They'd have to have shell access to the server or some way of proxying through it.

Eh, I was thinking of doing something like that for a while, but General Chat is probably the one forum I'd keep either way. The alternative is to either tell people to not make non-RH posts at all, or else allow the RH boards to be watered down by off-topic fluff....

Could you upload the picture you are trying to set on the uploader, so that I can check on my end?

Discord is one of those modern JS abominations that have the resource usage of an average mid-2010s 3D game... I really can't imagine myself running it for any extended period of time, so I'd rather it stay inofficial.

As far as I can tell, it's 153x153. Without the relevant item, you should only be able to have avatars up to 60x60 pixels. I forget if we do automated rescaling at all, but even if we do, I'm not sure that our imagemagick backend is actually equipped to rescale animated GIFs...

As of right now, the website now says The patient is alive, however RHDN will remain in the ICU for awhile and cannot accept any visitors.

Maybe they had an HDD death or something.

Also, let what is going on at the top of this thread be a monument to why the PoRA admonition matters

Not just one. There was one where the fork eventually withered (back in 2006 or so?) but resulted in those who associated with it being disillusioned with the entire cluster for good, one around 2008 that still exists but may have drifted in scope far enough to be unrecognisable, and one (Kafuka) fairly recently that largely took the remaining "social" component of this board with it.

Also, I suspect the reason this thread became a poll is the same as the handful of other threads that have spam responses predating their creation in them - our spambot cleanup code opens up thread IDs for reuse without being quite thorough enough at cleaning up all the data that is associated with them...

It's more often fairly straightforward than not. The DSP of the SPC-700 needs to know where the samples it is streaming are in memory, so it is easy enough to extract the sample data for a given instrument from a memory dump (SPC file). On the other hand, consistently changing the instrument is idiosyncratic to the game, as most game studios wrote their own engines (which, among others, tell the DSP what sample to use when, and sometimes even download them from the main processor on the fly) for the processor part of it. I made a pair of tools for extracting arbitrary samples and inserting them in SMW with DJ Bouche's SMAS engine patch a lifetime in internet dog years ago, which may still be serviceable.

(Unfortunately, unethical 2006!me did not include the source code with that release, and I have no idea where any extant copies of that would be.)

The uploader should now be unbroken. Ancient shoddy code resulted in the entire backing store, folder structure and all, being moved to the trash folder wholesale. Unfortunately, some files that were probably uploaded while it was broken are gone for good.

We've been about 9 years overdue for a new Town Square thread, since the previous one was posted all the way back in 2009 and has increasingly come to resemble a sort of digital Forest of the Impaled. Shock and awe is fun, but maybe we can try something more more human-rights-compliant for a change.

In that spirit, let's talk casually. Remember, this is just an internet forum. There is no need to be upset.

I'm not really experienced with high-end gaming, but from an engineering perspective, FreeSync sounds better (open standard, reusing available technology, etc.); to the extent ghosting is a problem (I think I have fundamentally slow eyes and so have never really experienced it with anything), the ball should be in the monitor-makers' court to fix it within the confines of that standard or come up with a better open replacement.

As for whether it's needed at all, well, I don't have it and feel fine. Random intermittent tearing has never bothered me, and I assumed that consistent tearing (like multiple frames in a row tearing around the same scanline) was an independently solved problem (i.e. something your engine's rendering governor should recognise and compensate for). I probably would make note of it as a favourable property if one configuration I considered buying had it but another didn't, but wouldn't go out of my way to shell out $100+ extra just to have it.

An admin account was compromised, with some minor mischief caused (trashed all stickies, banned all admins, edited the points of required attention). Let me know if anything important is missing or you can't get into your account (email in that case).

Sorry, the uploader was down for a few days because of a malware scare we had. NetSplit's link should now work again.

Expect it to go down again, though. I had them reboot the server for now so I could check the logs to figure out what went wrong (and pull a more recent backup), but whatever underlying problem made it crash appears to have left no traces. I'm still suspecting some issue with the mainboard or power supply.

(Cleaning up the database post-crash did reveal that someone found a (presumably unrelated) exploit in the board code all the way back in 2018, in a piece of code I hadn't audited enough. Who knows what consequences this will have down the line.)

so are you saying...you "still" havent ever asked your tech support guys what the actual real true problem was ?? Seriously ??

How are they supposed to figure out? I assume it's not like the case is actually on fire or the broken component turned red or something. If/when it goes down again, I will contact them, but even then, there's only a chance they'll find out something if there was actually a kernel panic with observable output or whatever. What can some site techs in a datacenter do when faced with a server that's simply off, with no useful information logged?

blackhole - any chance of bringing back the Uploader page ??

It's always said "cant connect to mysql sever" ever since acmlm board was brought back up.

I'd need to take some time to audit the code and serverside setup. A lot of the exploits we had were achieved through interactions between the uploader and the old Acmlmboard forks running on the server (in the vein of getting archive3 to include an uploader file with PHP code). Besides, it seemed like the uploader was getting very little legitimate use anyway...

Technically not, but the threads in question were so extremely stale that they might as well stay in the bin at this point. (Feel free to create new ones!)

I don't think there was any one event that resulted in the community thinning out to the current extent. We just went through repeated splits, while fewer and fewer people use standalone forums (as opposed to modern discovery-friendly platforms like Reddit or Discord). The generation that was raised on SNES is reaching an age bracket where people probably have jobs and kids of their own, and ROM hacking for newer consoles never quite took off because 3D is messy and machine-optimised assembly is gross.

We actually originally had a custom captcha (and the code is still there), but some spammers did come through and lots of people complained that if only we used reCAPTCHA instead there would be no problem. In hindsight, I do think that reCAPTCHA made the situation a little worse on the balance.

I do like your idea of having some questions asking for very basic domain-specific knowledge ("what does the second S in SNES stand for?"). If I find myself with an hour to spare at some point, I might just go and implement that.

The current maintenance burden for me is essentially "check in every month or so and hard-delete spammers". For historical reasons, mods and "normal" site admins can only perform easily reversible actions (banning, locking, hiding, moving).

I've been using Aivazovsky landscape pictures for all my devices' backgrounds for many years now. The problem with cute anime backgrounds is that the psychological healing effect on yourself rarely exceeds the adverse effect of the side-eyes you get in the "professional setting" for it

If you're going to switch to something chromium, you might as well switch to Firefox...
