I believe someone (either Trapster or Kawa) had a website which allowed you to generate variations on a certain template in the past.

The general idea is that you use both the header and the signature field in your profile in combination to surround every post by appropriate HTML tags. For instance, a HTML table with the source code
<center><table border="1"><tr><td>some text here</td></tr></table></center>

looks like this:
some text here

Accordingly, if you set your header to
<center><table border="1"><tr><td>
and your footer to
</td></tr></table></center>
, the board's renderer will surround every post of yours with them, resulting in it being rendered with the cheesy '90s 3D frame you see above.

I don't even remember about the NES, but wasn't the SNES restricted to feeding an analog signal into a coaxial antenna cable in terms of video output? To make this viable, in other words, you'd also need to sell old TV sets that are otherwise useless in the DVB age...

Im still baffled at how an admin was online, it didn't even bothered to see that someone has posted on all the forums (which is reaaaally suspicious on a board mainly inactive like this)

Who exactly was the admin in question? Also, keep in mind that someone might well have dropped by the board's frontpage but not had the time to actually read what is going on, let alone proceed to clean up the mess.

more staff
Not sure who would be suitable for the task. I can have a look around the active posters to see if there's anyone it would make sense to promote, I guess.

Posted by "YouKnowWho"
This was meant to point out what blackhole89 apparently refuses to admit: the board is dead. The current staff doesn't care about it. Either find staff that is willing to care about it, or archive it.
"Refuses to admit" still makes it sound like some kind of "blackhole89 defiantly sitting in his Führer bunker and clenching his teeth as Soviet tanks are rolling above his head" kind of scenario... that is really not accurate. Even if I wanted to, I wouldn't have the energy to actively "refuse to admit" anything for this long. The board simply usually takes an infinitesimal amount of effort to keep running - that is, as long as nobody feels the need to make a point that there aren't armed guards patrolling the database all the time, and some people seem to be getting benefit out of it, why should I bother to create additional effort for myself and possible disadvantages to others to shut it down/archive it/organise a proper handover?

Let's see what would have happened if I decided to drown this board under spam with the help of an automated script running 24/7. Assuming one post is made in a randomized thread every 5 seconds, and that the script knows to not attempt doubleposting or not try posting in restricted forums (and mostly posts in existing threads since there's a time limit for new threads), I would have been able to make 720 posts per hour.
Well, yeah, and someone equally could keep the board off the internet for a week by just directing a small to medium botnet of the kind you can probably rent or buy for .01 bitcoins these days. Barring cloudflare, the operation of anything on the internet nowadays requires a minimum amount of civility, common sense, goodwill or at least indifference from others.

join kafuka
I am honestly extremely reluctant to do that because I used to (and, modulo my impression of your activity on here, still do) have a lot of respect for you (and think that your past contributions to the board, in a way, do give your constant negativity some legitimacy), but if your purpose in coming here consistently is to produce a repetition of the "this board is dead, I warned you about blackhole89, join Kafuka today, we have everything they have here and more" spiel, it seems like the only appropriate moderation choice would be to ban you. Please, if you don't actually have anything to contribute beyond this, just stop posting.

I don't know what blackhole89 did but he fucked it up nicely.

I know he has a script to delete lamer accounts, but that atleast sets the 'last post' columns to the right values...
It actually doesn't. There is a separate script somewhere to fix postcounts and latest replies, but I'm not sure where it went.

I was behind the scenes yesterday when it all went down, it was NinjaBlooper! >8(

I see. Well, once again, he might have had his reasons. Being online does not always translate to having the time to mop up a spill of this scale.

I didn't *just* imply that there were other places to go, throughout my post.
"Imply that there were other places to go" is a nice euphemism for a post where every paragraph except for the first one (which was a single line wherein you talked about removing your admin status because the place was inactive) contained an "oh, by the way, Kafuka" link. I guess I'm glad you are at least clearly embarrassed.

If I actually wanted to censor you, I would not have mentioned the object of your post myself, and certainly would have at least tried to throw previous instances of you saying the exact same things down the memory hole. The point of deleting your post is to make any effort you put into writing it go to waste, so as to hopefully discourage you from making such posts again in the future. Further posts you make that seem to serve the purpose of trying to persuade people to join Kafuka (yes, that means that other content being present in the post is not an excuse) will be deleted and possibly result in a ban, which I think I will have less qualms about after seeing your latest response.

I am not usually one to derive much pleasure from other people's frustration and suffering, but at this point, I can't help but find your comical irritation at the continued existence of this board sufficiently hilarious to be motivated to keep things as they are simply to see how much more pointless flailing I can extract from you by doing literally nothing.

This board has dedicated forums for Super Mario RPG and Secret of Mana, but I don't know if these games are actually hacked more than SMK. Anyway, if an SMK forum was to be created, it would make sense to do it on a more active board. Maybe smwcentral or something.
They were created during phases when the respective fields were taking off and receiving a lot of hype (and, in the case of SMRPG, bad posters); with the current level of activity, it wouldn't be justified to create them, but it doesn't seem like a good idea to cause the upheaval that remerging them with other sections would cause. The ROM Hacking section does not seem to suffer from SMK activity, nor (as far as I can tell) vice versa at the moment.

ROM hacking has always been doing comparatively well even during the darkest hours of the board. I wonder if we should leave it this way (and possibly move the remaining bits out of the way altogether) or do something to encourage more general activity (that is not meta-discussion about the State of the Board).

Well, a patch that converts the original version of the game into itself (by doing nothing or at least nothing relevant) would be allowed, but that sort of patch would be trivial and fairly useless... the important criterion is the presence of a significant amount of content that some company (in this case, Nintendo) would be able to call copyright violation on in the file that is being linked.

Seriously though, googling for it led me to a ROM download among the first-page links.

Sorry, this is not really the right site or section for this sort of request. ROM hackers will not pick up a project if they don't find it interesting on its own merit; the only reasonable way you could hope to get someone interested is to make an exposé of the untranslated game that convinces someone with sufficient spare time and ability that it would be a worthwhile undertaking. Since a full-fledged translation is a significant commitment of time and effort, though, it's fairly unlikely.

Sorry, but unlike me, you seem to have an awful amount of spare time on your hands.

I left your original post because the suggestion in it was indeed constructive (although your methods are disagreeable) and so it might have been good if some other admin could follow up on it. I'm still fairly tied up, but I'll probably follow up on your suggestions if nobody else has done so by the time I get home.

I am honestly slightly puzzled by how the mere continued existence of this board manages to make so many people mad to the extent that they would go such lengths to heckle it. Are you all affiliated with one of the other forks and blaming your own stagnation on this board sucking up attention/Google ranks/ROM hacking activity? If so, that's silly - specialised internet boards have been on a downward trajectory ever since Facebook and Reddit came around. Even if you managed to convince the administration here to close up shop, nothing much would improve for you.

Since the old machine was starting to exhibit an excessive number of age-related symptoms, we have finally moved to a new server.

As the whole configuration was put on its head, there is bound to be some number of issues; please let me know in this thread if you experience any.

All the best,
Housekeeping

Update: Move progress:

Also, I begrudgingly switched our registration process to ReCAPTCHA (a pretty painful endeavour... it refused to create the response form field so I had to hack around that with some JS glue). Hopefully this will stem the tide of angry French bots somewhat.

You have to flush your DNS cache. It might still be thinking that acmlm.kafuka.org points at the old server.
