Those young people and their final projects that can be completed within 2 hours... my long-neglected BA project dissertation just took me nearly two weeks of all-nighters and insanity to write up.

(Incidentally, there's my excuse for going AWOL.)

Well, in our case, it was supposed to be a one-year project and most people I'm aware of actually did it do throughout the year... Cambridge has a pretty large contingent of people whose academic achievement is footed more in zeal than in skill and the university does a tremendous job at trying to break those who don't prefer the grinding approach in the first year.

Well, quoting WingNutDaily is significantly more likely to bring an "(a)theological shitstorm" upon oneself than simply claiming membership of some religious group...

I am usually a pretty vocal agnostic atheist myself, although I have long concluded that arguing with people about religious issues with the intention of making them reconsider their views is an utterly futile endeavour. However, if convincing the other side is not one's aim, some verbal sparring can be quite entertaining at times, and so...

Ah, no never! There's just a lot of stuff happening around this world to Christians, and all I can look up and say is "-sigh- Prophecy."
I'll bite. For every case of "stuff happening to Christians" (provided you don't linkdump a large, time-binding collection on me), I can link you a case of atheists being persecuted in a similar or more severe vein. You can then tell me where cases such as this fit into this "-sigh- Prophecy" you are speaking of.

The main problem seems to be ignorance on both sides. Whenever any sort of (a)theological conversation comes up, both sides already enter the conversation believing that they're in the right and there is no possible way they could be wrong, and that they're doing their "opponent" and the rest of the world a big favor by doing everything in their power to make the other guy look like an idiot who is also wrong.
Well, if arguments don't work and what it ultimately boils down is whether they or you convince the most people to vote at the next referendum for the respective other side to be disenfranchised or walked over, sometimes the best thing you can do is to make the others look ridiculous so that a hapless bystander is less inclined to be associated with them.
Science and logic undermine religion within their cognitive framework as efficiently as religion undermines science and logic within its own (and to preclude any sort of "religion is 100% scientific, the scientists are just wrong about science" response, I shall use those notions as defined by nonreligious and religious people respectively; the circumstance that they can not agree on what logic is in itself already demonstrates that there is no common cognitive framework); when you don't have any common basis to conduct an argumentative exchange on, pretending that what you are trying to appeal to is anything other than emotion is simply naive and dishonest.

Under X11, at least when using a compositing window manager, there is that whole concept of "redirection" where windowed applications have to be rendered to a separate buffer which is then rendered into the window by the compositor, causing overhead, rather than being rendered to the screen directly. I am not sure to what degree this applies under Windows, but something similar might be at work there...

Compared to the previous version, this is indeed a large improvement as far as playability goes, but I still find the lack of cues as to where to go or what to do next somewhat frustrating. In the end, I'm finding myself holding fast-forward a lot while walking around to look for things that look like they might be the next dungeon...

So I just returned from this 22-day trip around Europe. (Routes are drawn as direct lines when they weren't at times because the website wouldn't allow me to make it route through railway links.) I went with two people from my former school and friends of theirs, and we had rail passes which allowed us to take nearly all trains in Europe for free (sleeper cars and some high-speed trains still required paid reservation, and local rail companies sometimes didn't participate).

It was fun. Ask me anything.

Difficult to give a single answer to. Istanbul and Venice were the most interesting cities, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Budapest the most liveable in (using size, quality and infrastructure as criteria), and Slovenia as a whole (and Ljubljana in particular) were the most pronounced positive surprise as they have managed to go from being an eastern bloc country to looking neater and cleaner than even Scandinavia (which otherwise is the part of Europe that sticks out for being cleanly).

They say the trick to getting rid of a habit is picking up another habit to replace it.

Anyway, lately I've just been enjoying my holiday break; though besides that, I've been up to a lot of performance style training yet (shameless self promotion).

That looks like one of those things that would be incredibly painful if it was to go wrong...

Anyway, how have you been, board2? I haven't followed your affairs too closely for a while now.

Swept up and down by the tides of reality, I suppose, while gradually rolling onwards through academia. I only recently managed to start occasionally looking at this place again.

I see. Apologies for all the times when my actions and words may have contributed to your frustration, and thanks for your continued efforts up to now; I am sure the work you put into keeping this place in order in the face of decline was appreciated by everyone.

I wish you the best with whatever you might decide to divert your spare time towards now.

Quite relate-able. Balancing academics, a couple hobbies, and a very timid social life is enough to occupy the day; and that's just with courses for a Chemistry BS.
I recall you being rather heavy in the field of math; what degree are you working toward at the moment?
A Master of Mathematics (sounds sort of like it would go well with one of those "Master of the Obvious" image macros, doesn't it?) degree. Starting this autumn, I'll be doing a PhD, more likely than not at this point in theoretical CS at Cornell (i.e. deep in the US boonies).

It comes as a perpetual surprise to me how this place just won't die

The ones I listened to were quite nice, but they don't really strike me as being strongly in the style of the NES Megaman soundtracks - in particular, most of them seemed remarkably calm and peaceful compared to most MM music I'm familiar with, and were lacking some of the most defining characteristics such as the persistent usage of a comparatively high constant-pitch square/sine wave as a kind of additional percussion track or emulation of a tremolo-like effect by replacing held notes with constant-frequency repeated hits.

MikeTechno: Sorry, but I don't think I quite understand the point you are making. Care to restate it in a more coherent fashion?

Nowhere in the definition or rules of board2 does it state that only serious hacking and even more serious meta conversation is allowed...

Sorry, but this is not a filesharing board. Discussing something like that could mean trouble for everyone involved down the road.

I shall be closing this.

While it's not a big deal in this case, please refrain from uploading and posting actual ROMs in the future. Instead, generate a patch (e.g. using Lunar IPS).
