So what exactly goes wrong with it here? Or, alternatively, what nikoboard-specific features are you using?

I never was trying to make some point along the lines of "you needed to be friends with Xk to become staff". "[...] to remain staff" would be much closer to my perception of it. Anyway, I don't think there is much of a point in reheating all of this given that I don't even disagree with any statement in BMF's post.

As far as the argument "working in reverse" goes, however, this already fails due to the current set of admins not even being of my choosing.

Do not backseat mod here, or act like you are admin with authority here.
Unless I see a direct title under your name that says mod and all staff says I have to have listen to you, you and I do not need to interact with each other not unless there is a serious matter at hand.
In an act of frontseat moderation, I shall make the observation that the irony in that statement is quite astounding.

(And I don't even think that NK's post would constitute backseat modding...)

I really think that by doing that, we would be setting ourselves up for a lifelong supply of trolling and drama while the reality of getting a lot of new users over it would be dubious at best...

Furthermore, proclaiming that Jul is a good place for ROMhacking is not exactly a wise option. Sure, Jul does have a ROMhacking section, but it's not very active. And before you start saying that I should post in it to bring activity, you should know, I am one of the users who do post in that section.

But... all that can really be said is that if people start posting on it, it won't be inactive anymore. I don't see how moving hackers there should b2 collapse is a very bad idea. (Of course, we'd want archives of this board's forum... just like we have of Acmlm's I1-3. Don't want to lose information, after all.)
Sorry if I'm somewhat adding oil to the already flammable climate here, but I don't see how herding the hackers to a walled garden like Jul is a particularly responsible course of action to take, or will generally benefit anyone other than the present residents of Jul at all. They might have even less activity as far as ROM hacking goes, but at least Kafuka makes a decent effort to seem inviting to outsiders.

Please cut it out. It should be pretty clear that any sort of continuation to your somewhat comedically over-the-top vendetta against them will only result in this thread being further inundated with people rushing to its defense and/or descending upon you, further derailing this thread.

Thanks for your opinion, but I find it somewhat difficult to believe that you are genuinely concerned about the poor chaps who have to post here. I think it would be unfair to not give the new staff a chance at taking this board in some direction they see fit.

6% battery remaining, will look into replying in a more detailed fashion later.

If you are that keen on discussing the successes and failures of our disciplinary procedure, please take it to a separate thread.

It's almost as if you feel personally wronged by the circumstance that somebody is allowed to post on a board you don't even care about.

Thanks for restoring some amount of sanity to the thread. Please don't overgeneralise from one particular user's statements - I'm sure most people here have a sufficiently nuanced/less simplistic view of Jul and its users.

Running the forum as a hangout for friends would require having some sort of reasonably close-knit community of friends at its core to begin with. I don't think there is much enthusiasm anywhere about running this as anything other than a shared-interests (as opposed to, say, shared social circles) community.

The problem with introducing too much text size variation is that a lot of the themes wouldn't trivially work fine with both small and large fonts at once. Also, a lot of laptops (e.g. mine) still have 1280x800 displays...

Just use any SNES BGMs (Gradius, given the topic?), for instance - I'm not aware of any cases of those being copyright-claimed on Youtube. (But then, what do I know...)

Actual mobile devices are different from simple commonplace small-screen laptops. The WAP age is also pretty much a thing of the past, and decent mobile browsers (think Opera Mini) are quite good at dealing with pages not tailored towards them in my experience (by means of pinch-resizing or otherwise).

Tried it out just yesterday for a while before going to sleep. It was quite fun, and ironically more similar to that flash video illustrating the concept that did a lot to spawn the hype about the original game than the game itself wound up being. I had trouble getting the sound to work on Linux, though, and there were a couple of annoying physics glitches...

Sorry for links to Fox, but it seems like they were the ones to break the story. article1 article2

Apparently, the de facto leader has been working as an FBI plant for the past n months.

In fact, I distinctly remember an article a couple of weeks ago that mentioned people claiming to have doxed Sabu and quoted awkward/clumsy Twitter reactions of his to it, making me think that there is hardly away that he could not be in the authorities' pocket. (If the identity revealed was wrong, he wouldn't have reacted like he did; if it was right, he couldn't possibly remain at large and unconcerned) Indeed, digging up the reference document drop reveals that the internet knew all along. This makes me wonder how Lulzsec didn't manage to try running some more or less conclusive tests to verify or falsify his claimed identity; the former surely would have alerted the members to the circumstance that he can hardly have gone undetected all the time.

Anyway, between this, ACTA's gradual reheating and the Megaupload extraditions, one could say that the battle over the internet is looking rather less favourable as of late. I wonder what will happen next.

In my experience, XP with eyecandy and some resource-heavy aspects stripped out should even be somewhat usable with machines in the order of 300MHz. Otherwise, how difficult would it be to upgrade the processor to something faster using the same socket? You can probably get compatible ones very cheap.

Yeah, well, that was sort of my point - the recent news story says that the FBI has been using Sabu all along to collect data on the other members of the group, whereas the last link is a pastebinned collection of personal data some random people dropped on Lulzsec months ago which turned out to be correct in the case of Sabu all along.

I think that, since the FAQ mostly-suspension is still in place and there haven't been any lawsuits over this kind of thing on German territory I'm aware of, uploading hack ROMs is pretty safe.

boomerangs don't work like this

Seriously, though, nice work. Have you considered setting up, for instance, a VM running XP if you are having continued trouble running the editors?

I think the shoes would seem "more professional", whatever that means, if they had an LoZ3-like "accelerate in place" phase before you actually commence moving fast.

As far as performance-for-money goes, you are probably best off looking for some sufficiently low-tech laptop battery pack (i.e. one that would, if all else fails, provide you with power without any sort of initial talking to control electronics required). With plain, off-the-shelf batteries, rechargeable or otherwise, you'll at the very least require something like this, and in either case, you won't really have any straightforward means to measure remaining charge digitally (for laptop batteries, you'll need to interface with them properly, and for plain batteries, the only information you get is the voltage before regulation, e.g. by sticking a multimeter into it), and they won't be able to remotely live up to the capacity of even a cheap Lithium ion battery.

One thing you ought to pay close attention to is whether the batteries you are employing can actually be safely discharged at a sufficiently high rate to satisfy your device's power consumption. This value seems to be rarely, if ever, advertised on off-the-shelf consumer batteries (although I believe laptop batteries ought to have it), and I'm fairly certain that you wouldn't get 50 watts out of an AA battery. (Connect many in parallel.)

According to our datacenter support staff, some capacitors on the mainboard exploded earlier today. Subsequently, the server went down. When they replaced the HD into a different machine, the server would get stuck on boot (kernel panic).

I realised what was going on pretty late to begin with (~2:30hrs down), they took a while to reply (+~2hrs) and then actually getting the problem sorted out (netboot into a rescue image, regenerating initramfs and installing GRUB as LILO wouldn't do the job, waiting for them to manually hardreset every time it got stuck again) took another 2 hours of so, together with some time interspersed here and there as I needed to commute and pretend to be active at my vacation job, sums up to a total 8something hours down... but here we are, and it seems like nothing broke too badly in the end.

Sorry for any inconvenience caused.
