The tweets about it are a somewhat hilarious; you can feel all the oozing rage from kids who know of no other way of doing school projects but to ctrl-c ctrl-v from Wikipedia. Perhaps it will also be an educational experience to them. 10/10, Jimmy.

We're not really large enough to make any sort of impact. Besides, considering our audience, it would be basically preaching to the choir.

Really, I think that with Wikipedia and Google, whatever there was to achieve has been achieved anyway.

Yeah, and either the next ones with provisions going even further will be brought, or they will implement the same thing in smaller steps while patting each other on the back for their generous compromising.

edit: A good article summing up something very close to my viewpoints on the issue.

Endless reiterations of the same concept with varying quality had been around on 4chan since long before Reddit even existed, and a general rule when dealing with anything like that is that you simply do your best to ignore the ocean of piss to appreciate the few lumps of gold being swept around in it.

Sorry if there is something obvious I forget there, but did SMB2 actually have technical improvements over DDP that make it easier to do this rather than backporting all the small/cosmetical changes in SMB2 to a DDP ROM?

I'm quite impressed that hacking of any full 3D game could have managed to take off to this degree. I always vaguely counted myself among the "it's too cumbersome for anything substantial to be done" camp as far as they were concerned so far...

But on the other hand, RHDN has been doing just that and their forum has been consequently seen as all but vestigial by most. The way the typical user uses it is as a simple heap of files rather than a community.

Well, if we were to be serious about it, I think the first step would be collecting a sufficient number of people actually willing to go through the arduous work of maintaining it (we could carry over the data that exists in www.kafuka.org), and the second one would perhaps be to write up a frontpage that is more usable/less gimmicky...

Well, a "working frontpage" is something that has been requested time and time again in AB's history; in the end, all the purpose that one existing served was keeping the people who would claim that one being introduced would be the panacea for all problems ever quiet for a while.

The last(pre-kafuka.org) such project that happened, incidentally, was this (a sort of joint project SMWC proposed; in the end, we diverged as Boom.dk tried launching the now-defunct "Nightfall"; ours never went beyond the planning stage you see beyond the link).

The instruments being off in MIDI is not a problem you can avoid. Unlike mod-like formats, MIDI does not contain any samples of its own and uses ones from a soundfont or a hardware wavetable. In other words, when you convert an S3M file to MIDI, the information contained in the instrument samples is irrevocably lost.

I actually wasn't aware there were any "PSF-making tools"... I always assumed that PSF was, like SPC, fundamentally an emulated format. If that is true, which game's engine would those tools use... and why would you want to do that, anyway? (I can't imagine inserting them in a game being a straightforward task.)

That actually sounds like a pretty neat idea. I wonder how difficult it would be to make the engine support more "worlds" in such a fashion; it seems like with many sensible ways of implementing the dark/light worlds, it would be just a matter of changing some pointers and bound checks...

And of course besides the academics, I'm continuing my calisthenic training. On Friday morning I trained by handstand-jumping from a thirty inch platform to the ground, with a 30% success rate, and I can now hold a flagpole (with sloppy form) for up ten seconds on my right side, with a closed palms-inward grip. The achievements are still relatively modest, but I've only been actively training them for a little under a month now. By June, I hope to have a ten second flag with good form on either arm, and a 80% success rate or higher for handstand hops.
Wait, this counts as calisthenics? Not that I know anything, but I always was under the impression that the term denotes something closer to performing elaborate stretches in large group exercises...

So is there anything particular you are training towards or is it just a "for the sake of it" thing? I remember peter_ac talking about doing similar exercises motivated by his Parkour hobby...

I find the null hypothesis (all placebo) to be much more plausible than this. As far the "increased desire to solve mathematical and logic problems" goes, it's only natural that it would to occur to you more often if you are preoccupied with finding out whether such a drug had an effect on you (and have considered getting it to begin with); it's sort of like attributing a heightened impulse to check out the chimney to an effect of pills that are supposed to summon Santa...

well, one critical flaw you make here is assuming that jul's power structure is entirely based around my friends and my friends alone, while it's actually rather wrong.

just a quick glance over the various staff threads and what goes on makes it pretty clear that we're far from all being best buddies, but we can mostly get along without being at each other's throats all the time, and there's generally not a whole lot of backstabbing going on.

Friends can have quarrels and still remain friends. I have no idea what it is like now, but back then, your admins were BMF, with whom you cohabited, and Hiryuu, whom you poured your heart out to on a regular basis, plus a couple of fullmods who could be quite aptly described as your groupies.

Also, <acronym>? HTML sure marches on... Anyway, your image of how the Kafuka split came to pass is quite mistaken. In reality, what happened (from what I gather) is that Emuz approached KP9000 and Ailure first and convinced them of his plan, then making them confront me with subtle undertones of "you have no choice but to agree" and being rather surprised that I didn't cling to power to the degree they apparently expected me to. (The reason it played out the way it played out in the end was yet an entirely different one.)

and then it came out that the only reason you really left them around was for the post count.
Activity is not the same thing as post count.

(and all sorts of other fun quotes I can go grab real fast)
While some of those are out of context, I can't deny that I let the events affect me to a degree that can only be described as pathetic. It's not that I was the only one who evidently had an unhealthy amount of investment in board-related affairs, though; I, for my part, at least had the decency to not attempt extracting similar comedy from, say, your impassioned exchange with Hiryuu some time after the split.

honestly, just stick a fork in it. you're done. you've been on simmer for a few years now and it's time to just turn off the heat and throw it out.
Will consider. That's part of the point of this thread.

also i love the fact it took me about a year to register. guess something's broken, but E_NO_SURPRISE.
I guess it's the proxy detection. Not that it ever has worked to begin with.

Well, thank you for sharing your views in a more or less constructive manner. I have been half wondering when you would turn up.

Wait, are you basically posting to complain about how everyone hates you?

Something about your socialisation must have gone badly wrong if you think trying to guilt-trip people into liking you is viable.

Do consider the fact that most of my "socialization" (if you can even call it that) involved me being locked in a small room with a computer being the only contact with the outside world. I never really had any contact with social beings.
Okay. Well, for future reference: It doesn't work. Perhaps they take on charity cases* over at Kafuka, but if you have no intention of making a contribution here/at Jul/wherever else you have felt rejected at the past, don't expect to be tolerated simply on the basis of pity.

* I'm sure there are self-help forums for people like that to reaffirm each other and feel good. You might be genuinely interested in seeking out one.
