The board has an RPG battle system; it just never left alpha and so is not trivially accessible to the regular user.

One day, perhaps, something more might be made out of it.

Interesting... Would the battles actually have some kind of prize for a winner or would it strictly be for fun?
Well, there might be prize items or the like, but I don't think it has been thought out to that degree. There's only this much you can reward people with on an internet message board...

Posted by blackhole89
Apart from that, some items do have special effects that are of some relevance in everyday board usage...

Even more interesting... But judging by the mysterious ellipsis, I'm guessing that's all the info I'm going to get out of you, huh?

Your judgement is spot-on, good sir.

05:01:15 blackhole89's line count: 227786 - Rank 12/33058 - Next: 6637 Prev: 1419

...and ranked fourth for postcount. I am very tempted to calculate a ranking by total number of words rather than posts and/or F-K level...

Translation: None, except for a very few specially coded items, half of which should probably be profile options instead.
Unrelenting as ever, aren't you

...which is why I linked its Wikipedia page. Very roughly speaking, it is supposed to be a measure of what level of education the reader needs to have attained to deal with the sesquipedalian loquaciousness of a given text.

And well, you could argue in a similar way that a postcount-based regime encourages pointless posting and/or does not acknowledge scarce, but quality posting to the same degree as it acknowledges frequent empty smalltalk... but then, given the prerequisite laziness of anyone ever getting involved with the board code, it's quite unlikely we ever would get such an elaborate scheme anyway.

It was getting rather long, so we decided to truncate it and start anew.

A fresh welcome from me too, Celice.

I'm not even sure if there is anything much to gain either, but the point of suggesting that was to keep things positive. Why make it so people can see bad things? Maybe it would hurt the board's image? You only want to show them the good things. Only promote the positive.
Well, at the same time, it seems somewhat dishonest to hide the bad things away completely... it's not like people wouldn't catch on to it if we were trying to present an artificial sugar-coated version of the board.

But yeah, page numbers on the top of the sub-forum pages would be awesome, that way I don't have to scroll all the way down just to click a page number. They already have it that way in threads themselves, so I don't see it being too hard to implement in the sub-forums.
That, I shall look into.

Ah, I already know about all that stuff :p It's a shame everyone's afraid of looking into all the Japanese knowledge available about the games...
2ch-based communities are usually a bit of a pain to collate data from... if you have it all in one place somewhere, I'm sure there would be some people (me included) who could have a go at producing translations of the relevant parts.

UPDATE: This story is actually several months old. Sorry for not noticing that.
The whole article just reeks of a random rage piece written up by somebody who saw their political views violated on a whim with little to no research having gone into it. It's not a particular surprise that people like this exist - perhaps more worrying that they have access to somewhat widely read channels to spread their opinion around on.

The second analogy might work if they had upwards of a countably infinite number of books...

Well, it seems like academia in poorer countries is not generally expected to make any contributions worthwhile enough to change the scheme for their sake, to whatever degree this expectation is correct...

A question that would immediately connect to it is whether there even is anything along the lines of arXiv for, e.g., Paleontology - and how much of a chance it would have. While I figure that this is much more extreme in the completely soft fields like sociology or classics, I always was under the impression that subjects of the kind that arXiv doesn't cover tend to be quite strongly influenced by academic cliques seeking to maintain control over what interpretations or viewpoints are to be perpetuated as accepted mainstream; retaining a closed, reviewed journal system might, for people whose livelihood depends on the survival of such machinery, well be an existential matter.

Well, the difference between this place (when it was more active) and SMWC always was that we had quality whereas they had quantity... so really, I'd not be too worried about the levels being up to a certain standard if we do manage to get a sufficient number of them.

(910 bytes collapsed: spoiler)

(25 bytes collapsed)

Is this the preferred way or should I do something constant-size, appear-on-hover like 4chan's spoiler tag? If you do prefer it, I might put some time into making it look decent. Quote the post to see how it's used.

One of the better memes to have come out of 4chan recently, that's for sure... I wouldn't be surprised if in the end, 90% of the templates are made by the same guy.

I anticipate some hours of procrastination potential there...

This might be old, but I found this pretty neat; this guy takes pictures of various cities in (either lens-induced, or simulated in postprocessing; I'm not sure) nearly parallel projection and with low depth-of-field, effectively making them look deceptively like game or model towns.

You would probably benefit greatly from using IDA Pro, if you aren't already; from what I hear, Gameboy plugins for it do exist. (If only someone unlazy enough could be bothered to write a decent one for the SNES...)

Anyway, thumbs up for making what seems to be good progress on a reasonably ambitious project.

Well, arXiv greatly benefited from Cornell's patronage giving it a more official air... perhaps a reasonably large and influential paleo/history workgroup (or multiple ones jointly) at some US university would have a shot at achieving the same with some investment of effort.

@blackhole: I heard IDA has issues dealing with the 65816 8bit/16bit variable length oddness but I don't know if it's been fixed in a recent version.
I wasn't aware of it even supporting the 65816 at all. Given that its first-round analysis is based on tracing interrupt vectors and execution paths and it generally has very powerful heuristics, I find it hard to believe that the variable-length instructions would become the stumbling block of all things...

SOPA has already been killed anyway, from what I gathered.

As far as the other thing is concerned - I consider it counterproductive to expend any sort of effort on battling the bill of the day when it's just a matter of formality for the industry to push a new and slightly reworded one in a few months' time; if they keep trying, they are bound to succeed earlier or later. Now, if people could get off their indoctrinated rear ends and mount some sort of movement to criminalise lobbyism as the disgrace to democracy it is, that would be a different story...

Protip for Wikipedia: It's not actually blanked. They just display:noned all the content DIVs and put an overlay in place.
