I probably have an edge as far as the reading/writing goes since I already have a working command of Japanese, although I certainly can't claim being particularly good at handwriting. Anyway, the main recommendation I can give is trying to understand the mode of thinking and the system behind the characters as the very first step; given China's literacy rate, it should seem evident that it can not possibly be that complicated as long as you approach the writing system without preconceived notions about its complexity.

I do have my doubts regarding the statement about a vocabulary of about four hundred characters. My latent knowledge of Chinese characters might well exceed the 1500 mark by now, but my understanding of newspapers still is at most fragmentary (although not knowing many grammatical glue characters, peculiar to the Chinese languages and often simplified beyond recognition, might be part of the problem).

Googie: Yeah, using something like RPG Maker, which might not be pretty or technically impressive but is bound to produce tangible results quickly and only requiring a minimum of skill and time investment, might have better chances of success.

ninjablooper: Advertisement to people who don't know the board yet is a quite deep problem... the link is generally circulated quite widely in a particular segment of the ROM hacking community, and beyond that, it's unclear what we should do; putting up Google ads hardly is productive. As far as the loquaciousness goes... I am bound to agree, but opinions have also already been voiced to the effect of the excessive verbosity giving rise to a sort of "no fun allowed" atmosphere that discourages casual posters.

What exactly is the data represented by the "map pieces editor"? It looks sort of like garbage, although its entropy is too low to assume to be entirely such - it's more as if the tiles have randomly been exchanged for completely different ones.

I accidentally clicked something in the Map Pieces Editor, and now it is spewing

02:15:30 - System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
at Someditc.MapEditorControl.glControl1_Paint(Object sender, PaintEventArgs e)

all over the place.

The internet is not going to go away.
I wouldn't be so sure about that. The principles according to which some things are declared old and busted while others are considered the new hotness are not always quite rational, and at least at the moment, there are plenty of industries with a quite clear notion of what went wrong for them when the internet is introduced and who dream of not allowing those mistakes to be repeated when the next technological revolution comes around.

I don't know. I played DotA quite extensively back in the days and tried League of Legends briefly, and both just seemed cumbersome and boring games that combined the worst aspects of RTS and tower-defense to me... in the end, all it seemed to boil down to was repeatedly hiding in forests and then quickly executing whatever skill sequence your character is supposed to use against other players.

As I said in a chat to Blackhole89, it's not quantity but quality for me. And I do not mind this being our closeknit corner as a forum, even if the activity might not necessarily be as high as bigger forums.
In the end, lack of activity does, however, quite naturally discourage people who want quantity and speed of feedback from posting.

Isn't Hana Yori Dango a dating sim aimed at a female audience?

Anyway, got nothing here.

I've been egged into several nights wasted on Terraria. It's pretty fun at first, but I don't see it having a lot of replay value...

Care to provide a download link or the like? I would give running it under Linux a shot, although chances are slim Intel drivers would manage.

I think I succeeded at stumbling upon the charge beam when I played it, but am not sure what the Spring Ball even is. My memory of everything to do with Super Metroid is positively fuzzy; the amount of backtracking made it hard to even keep track what areas were actually newly accessible and what areas I just hadn't visited since the beginning...

No, screw this.

I'm closing this whole damn section. You've flipped my pancakes one time too many, Spatula.

Now, can we all please at least make an effort to assume good faith...

Anyway, thanks for all the feedback so far; although it doesn't really seem like our problems are fundamentally out of the way, the last few days went comparatively well.

One point of contention that seems to be a recurring theme is that the board doesn't seem particularly welcoming to newbies. I'm a bit at loss as to what the concrete reason for that perception is, still; even undertaking to redouble our efforts to appear friendly and open, it seems likely that we would completely miss the point and improve nothing if we just were to do it blindly. What would be concrete things to attempt to improve in that regard? Kestegs, and everyone else who came out of an existence of lurking or similar to voice this opinion, I would be particularly interested to hear your take on the problem.

Hamtaro126: The thread was not meant as an announcement of closure, merely of the real possibility if things don't improve...

My opinion on the matter is that it would be quite worthwhile. The money would help pay for the cost of college and if I worked only 60 hours a week, I could still be able to perform research in a lab on the side or take one or two graduate-level classes.
Don't delude yourself into thinking that. 60 hours of paid work are not the same as 60 hours of school; there is a good reason most German professional unions have spent the 90s ferociously campaigning for the mandated 38-hour week in most industries to be reduced down to a 35-hour week. If they pay you money, they will make sure you don't get to zone out, idly chat with others or relax during break; rather, they will see to it that they get their money's worth in work after you, and if you have any intellectual energy left after a 12-hour day, from their perspective, it would just mean that they haven't worked you efficiently enough.

Try sitting down with a large stack of, say, 6th grade maths textbooks and spending 12 hours of every single day of a week working through the example questions in them. That will give you more of an idea what it is like.

If you need money for your studies, take up a loan. There should be government-subsidised, possibly even interest-free loans available for that purpose.

I think I still haven't seen all the secret levels in YI... 100% clearance on everything surpassed the attention span I had available as a kid.

Now that you mention what the Spring Ball does, though, it does sound very familiar after all... I wonder if I got it after all and didn't register the name. I spent enough time being confused as to where to proceed that I might well have picked up all the items while flailing about by pure accident.

He was working on an ALttP editor to compensate for all of Hyrule Magic's shortcomings, if memory serves right.

Apart from that, I don't think that the likes of SMWC are actually a particularly good idea... sharing platforms encourages the sharing of ideas and mutual exploration, and my brief excursions to SMWC always revealed plenty of deeper technical questions being considered "hard" and remaining unanswered over there that could easily have been answered by many members of other games' hacking communities.

The board has an RPG battle system; it just never left alpha and so is not trivially accessible to the regular user.

One day, perhaps, something more might be made out of it.

Apart from that, some items do have special effects that are of some relevance in everyday board usage...
