Ah, so that was the story behind that post.

My working theory was not that far off the mark.

Technically, the board code very carefully filters things in a manner that https links to the server will be turned into http links when accessed with an http connection and vice versa. Of course, this can't possibly affect posts others make elsewhere - but that is the respective posters' individual problem.

As for the self-signed certificate, I don't exactly feel like paying a three-digit sum to $certificateprovider - and using CAcert would solve nothing as most browsers don't seem to list it as a trusted certifier.

For the PoRA box, I agree about the relative URLs

443 is the standard https port, but that's used for SSH at the moment. Given that I don't rely on port 443 SSH anymore, I probably can change that though if demand is there.

The PoRA box is not fed through the post filter, yes.

Arbe was referring to the deleted post, presumably.

Undeleted it for your viewing pleasure.

Yes, yes you do. I think pretty much everyone present realized that as I undeleted that post after the first complaint.

For some reason, this thread sadtabs in Chrome. Going straight to newreply, however, works. I wish there was a non-annoying way of debugging what exactly is happening...

In other news, I'm forcing myself to learn to play this. (Watch it if you haven't; it's fabulous.) It's somewhat way above my level, but I kind of managed to get to play it up to ca. 0:20 in that video (although not quite as securely) in 2hours+something of work.

I have managed to trace the crashes to roxahris' layout.

Interesting.

Also, well, bullshit or not, <10 posts a day is not tolerable and personally, I'm okay with taking any measure available to me against that.

If the board goes, so does the IRC channel, so it doesn't make that much of a difference.

Could those bytes encode the physical attributes of the next (or previous) bunch of tiles, i.e. if they are solid or deadly or whatever? If that sequence is variable-length and has to be terminated properly, it would be plausible to assume that removing whatever the proper terminator for it is would wreak extensive havoc to the whole level parsing mechanism (as it tries to parse things that make no sense whatsoever as attributes for this set of 4 tiles).

Yes, given that the board had dropped to a one-digit number of posts again.

If you have a better suggestion, go ahead.

You are saying it like "YOU go and make interesting topics, then I might have something to contribute to them!". This is not how forums work.

And well, so far, it's at least been working as far as getting out of the lowest activity pits goes. If the board falls beyond redemption, IRC is going to be thrown into the incinerator alongside anyway, so I don't see how it is an inadequate measure.

If you were looking at me specifically, I made quite a number of threads, and a neglectable number of them got anywhere.

But yeah, something is wrong if the continued operation of a forum depends on a single person making threads, and all the more so if that single person also is a staff member.

Well, the problem was that IRC also gradually was absorbing debate topics and generally everything that would ostensibly more appropriately be discussed in a forum.#

The other problem is that there is actually, as stupid as it sounds, a certain psychological effect associated with activity, no matter whether it's spam or not. Regardless of all "LOL POSTCOUNTS ARE LARGE I'LL MAKE THEM EVEN LARGER!!1" platitudes, a large postcount signifies to the potential poster that there is an eager audience around and that, if he were to post about $pettopic, people would actually be there to listen to what he has to say and respond, thus encouraging the postage.

Semi-relatedly, there was this game I used to play on a Sega machine they had on display in a clothing department store my mom used to drag me into when I was 9 or so. The only thing I recalled about it was that there was some level named "Burning Hamlet" where a giant fireball chased after you and you could not proceed with the game even if you passed the level if you had started on a too low difficulty. For years, if not a whole decade, I had thought it was some obscure Sonic spinoff and given up all hope of ever finding it again (partly because I had low awareness of alternative meanings of "Hamlet" and thought I might have mistaken some other, similar word for the Shakespearean character in my youthful folly).

Like one year ago, I went looking again and successfully identified the game as High Seas Havoc.

Well, you are pretty much exactly right about the "need" part. Even with all the involvement of others, I can't really deny having been involved in such a considerable number of hallmark steps towards the present situation that it would be entirely absurd to deny responsibility, and accordingly, I'd see it as a complete and bitter personal failure if the board was to die. Now, the thing is that I am a rather stubborn and obstinate person and will fight to the end to prevent such complete and bitter personal failures.

Could you provide links? The board allows for HTML and something that resembles BBcode and I don't really see why the hassle of searching for things on youtube on our own is necessary given that you already know where they are.

Depending on how powerful the pose detection is, you could solve this (and all other kinds of command input) using hand gestures, e.g. hold out both your hands in front of you forming a box with your left and right hand's index fingers to see an inventory list. This would also patch in nicely with the "magical bag" notion that is widespread in sword-and-sorcery games.

Next hurdle: Moving around. A player's room generally is of limited size.

Facebook and Twitter might be Facebook and Twitter, but let's not forget that before that, there were Myspace, Yahoo Chat, ICQ and Geocities, each of which was seen as $medium's downfall - and yet, we still have IRC, we still have forums, we still even have mailing lists and Usenet. Not even the peer pressure of a thousand stampeding troglodytes could possibly displace nostalgia and accustomedness as stabilizing forces in the general makeup of the internet. Sure, the landscape in which forums have to survive changed, but that just means that we have to adapt - if, of course, we manage.

On that matter, Emuz, thank you for your input; it is certainly very much appreciated. The IRC closure was a kind of desperation measure when the posts-a-day counter hit single digits - and a quite efficient, I dare add, considering that without it, we probably would not be having this discussion right now and many people (whose implicit and explicit support I am very happy to see) would not even have developed much of an acute awareness for the hardships the board is going through, leading to it withering away unnoticed.

I suppose one alternative strategy if a shot into IRC is to be considered a footbullet is to take the alternative direction and put more emphasis onto IRC as a part of the community - perhaps integrating IRC in a way that is less awkward to use than a byzantine and hidden away Java applet and pointing out that that's where most of the lighter discussion takes place (as one of the main problems with IRC is that it pretty much absorbed everything but highly technical ROM hacking posts and debate rants that might indeed make the community as reflected on the forum appear stiff, unaccessible and elitist).

You shold provide a little more detail than this if you want to erect a thread. As it stands, this just looks like a cheap flame.

If this doesn't take a surprising turn into a good direction soon, I will dispose of it.

After careful contemplation, I choose to send forth .hack//G.U. Opening Loop 1 ~ 夜明けの飛翔 ("Flight of dawn") (listen in 480p).

The decision was a bloody difficult one, but I shall, furthermore, throw in Live-a-Live's title screen theme.

Edit: The shortlist included Star Ocean's title theme and the same from Ookami.
