To add to my first post - if I was suddenly given the ability to delete posts, I would delete the contents of this thread then take it upon myself to convince staff it didn't happen.
You can't give that sort of power to the average user, because it will only cause problems.

Particularly if someone gets offended, which seems to happen quite frequently as of late...

Staff can look at deleted posts, as well as undelete them if they feel so inclined. And the idea is clearly that normal users can only delete their own posts, not the posts of others. That would be dumb and broke.
