I thought UPS was replacing the IPS format, or at least, from what its intentions were
I know that with Fire Emblem ROM hacking, a lot of people use the UPS format, simply because it was the first thing that worked--apparently, someone couldn't get a proper patch through Ninja, or anything like that. |

That's basically how Destiny of an Emperor worked on the NES too: running a search for the actual word, rather than a string of words, would bring you to the dictionary table. From there, you could just see which words were which in terms of which comes where in the table. |

When I had the motivation to screw with the game... last year (program pushed back though) I was going to grab graphics from Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis. |

I've used Blender for creating weapons for Oblivion on the PC--it's relatively simple, if you've the patience to learn the program (if only to learn your way around the program.
I wouldn't think that just because the original game had a large amount of varied graphics, that a hack would have to have the same amount of detail. Personally, I would rather have the varied environments than the detailed original style. The only real bad thing would be you wouldn't have the depth to the game, like with Moleville, or the underwater part of the game, or even some of the dungeons. This Just can't really replace this :/ |

These'll help with ripping graphics for other hacks, by far ^^ |

Googie always inspires me to get back into messing around with older games. And he has good choices too ^^

Also, ROMhacking interest in general has rapidly died down in the past few years, especially amongst older games. That, and this forum hasn't exactly differed--other places there's still active projects and the like, but it's mostly a niche thing. |

It's a hack of Bomberman I wanted to do after seeing Googie show off his Bomberman hack. It's just a small thing that I felt like doing. I also tried to make the text as Engrish-NOA-NES-Manual-like as possible^^
Get the patch here! (second thread was a slip of the 'Enter' key :o ) |

I actually liked the scrawls. It made the font look more drawn to me ^^; |

It also didn't help that the editor was pushed back repeatedly--while that does not mean less would be interested, I certainly began to lose interest, unfortunately. I tried to use the editor at release, but I didn't have the motivation to do much with it
That's not to say there aren't a few individuals likely working on some things at the moment that simply haven't made it public. If one really wants to get some things going, they should google up some Super Mario RPG fansites, especially message boards, even GameFAQs, and advertise the editor there. |

I liked it because I was playing a direct remake that polished the bad features but retained the original quality of the first game. It's not as good as the rest of the series, but it's still a nice play for a fan, especially one who loves the NES/Famicom era of gaming ^^;
I think the levels are compressed under plain LZ77. I don't fully remember though. Surprisingly, there's level editing for the first, third, fourth, sixth, seventh, and eight Fire Emblems. The GBA series has no actual level editor yet, but the format is known, and one can use Mappy to create maps and convert them to the level format the game uses. The first game has no compression. The third and fourth have Japanese level editors. If someone's highly interest in hacking the series, the GBA portion is covered heavily here. Lots of editors, though they use a program called Nightmare, a generic data editor that someone posted at acmlm years ago. There's enough data known to create full-editors, if a fan wants to program one. I know Squash Monster had said he was interested in doing something like that for the eight Fire Emblem, and even made a "beta" level editor called FireVine ^^ |

I like the looks of this quite a bit. Is the level data known, and all you need an editor? I know another series' level data is edited with a program called Mappy, a generic map editor that can dump out the arrangement of tiles as data, which you can "convert" to the format your levels use. Naturally, if it's uncompressed data, the tiles should be straightforward, which would make a "generic editor" able to create data the game could use as the tiles wouldn't be any more complex than 'Tile1' 'Tile2' 'Tile3' and so forth (this is likely confusing--if so, I'm sorry ^^;; ). |

The same group who make the Super Mario RPG level editor also created one for that game, released a little time before the latter. Try looking through the history of the ROMHacking section--it should only be a few pages back. Alternatively, ROMHacking.net may have it uploaded to their database. |

Personally I just open up the PPU viewer in FCEUXD or whatever the version is now, and then run a search with a hex editor for the palette values used for their sprites.
If that helps. |

If you want to retain the style but are not able to emulate it, you could attempt to take pieces from various graphics and splice them together, though if you're not skilled or watchful enough, it'll look like shit. I'm not sure how consistent the sprites in A Link to the Past even are, so this option may not even be viable, especially so if there's simply no positions that match the sprite you're wanting to recreate.
Your best bet is to read up on some pixel art, and then study the shading and outline style of the graphics used in A Link to the Past. And just... practice. |

Personally... I would just work with whatever editor is easiest. Otherwise I'd lose interest :x |
