Another, even more insane idea I had just a minute ago combines my Super Mario Crossover idea with NES remix. In NES Remix for the Wii-U, there are certain parts where you can play as characters in games they aren't normally in, like playing as Kirby in a Super Mario Bros. styled level. This led me to have an insane idea.

I call this idea the NES Crossover Pack. The game would have four games: Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3, Metroid, and Kirby's Adventure. There would be four playable characters for each game: Mario, Samus, Kirby, and Link. you could play Metroid as Kirby, Super Mario Bros. 3 as Link, and so on.

Power-ups in each game would behave differently for each character. For example, getting the Morph Ball in Metroid as Kirby would give him the Wheel power, which would get put in an inventory screen so you could access it at any time, or killing enemies in Kirby's Adventure as Mario would drop power-ups like ice flowers and such.

If this is possible, this would take a MONUMENTAL amount of time, effort, and skill to make, but I just thought it would be cool to put this idea here.

So, I've been trying to figure out how to hack stuff on my Android tablet, when I found out that I could get DOS level editor editor programs that help me edit the games. I've currently got programs that edit Mega Man 1 and 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, and The Legend of Zelda. However, is there a program that makes IPS patches for NES games? I would like to get a program like that so I can release demos and get people's input on my hacks.

Edit: Any DOS editors for Metroid too? I would like to hack that.

Wow, awesome! Thank you so much, Model FZx I thought there were no utilities for hacking on Android, but I guess I just wasn't looking in the right place. Hopefully I can learn to use these editors well, I just found out about DOS programs today.

Yeah, I use DOSbox turbo. I also have an app called "Hacker's Keyboard" that replaces my normal keyboard UI. it has a lot of the same keys a laptop does, making it a lot easier to navigate the programs. it"s really useful because I don't have a physical keyboard

Edit: Um, I can't figure out how to switch screens in a level in Visine. I know how to get to the level select screen and title screen, though. A little help here?

Hey, I was wondering, how do you make levels re-enterable in Megaman 2? After I finish my hack, I want to add a SRAM patch, and I don't think it's cool to have a save file where you can only play the final levels.

Wow, thanks! And I would like for you to suggest hacking tools for Android.

Also, I just started with a Megaman 2 hack, I've got my two base patches applied already: RetroRain's SRAM patch, and a cool patch that changes the weapons, like making items 1, 2, and 3 infinite, and making it possible to manually detonate Crash Bombs. So far I've only edited the Boss Select screen, but I hope to do a lot more. I'm so excited to finally get into ROM hacking!

Wow, I can't thank you enough for all of your help, but hopefully a spot in the credits my hacks will do Once I get more stuff done, I'll release screenshots and betas for everyone to test.

So, how do you delete the current screens in a level in Visine and set up new scrolling for new screens? For my hack I want to make branching paths for each level. For example, I want to make it so that in Wood Man's stage, the player can choose to go through the forest, where there are more enemies, or go underground, where there is more platforming and bottomless pits. However, I don't really know how to edit the scrolling.

So, I've been slightly editing the scrolling in levels and playing them in NESoid to get used to editing scrolling and making levels that aren't impossible to beat (one time I accidentally made the first ladder in Heat Man's level lead to a pit). But when I went into attribute mode and tried to place some blocks, those same blocks were placed in every 32x32 block that was identical to the one I selected. Am I perhaps doing something wrong, or is this just how the editor is?

According to a tutorial I found online, pressing A on the keyboard enters Attribute Mode, which allows you to select ladders, spikes and such from the thing on the bottom-right of the screen, and place them on the currently highlighted 32x32 block on the screen. I thought this was the intended way of adding stuff, but I guess I'm wrong.

Oh! that makes more sense. I originally thought you could just place stuff without having to worry about changing the blocks, I guess I need to get used to game editors.
I should have a demo level for Heat Man ready soon, possibly in the next couple of days.

Hi, is it all right for me to use this patch as a base for a hack? I'm guessing it's okay, but I figured I'd ask first.

Hopefully this will be the last question I have for a little bit, but is there a way to make enemy sprites load properly when placed in different levels? I tried adding the fire enemy from Quick Man's level into Heat Man's level, but the sprite was screwy. I suppose that particular enemy might be difficult to add to other levels because a palette change is associated with it, but is there a way to at least fix the graphics for it?

So, I decided I wanted to do a sprite edit of Mega Man to turn him into a Mega Man styled Samus Aran from Metroid. I was going to use sprite layering for her arm cannon and helmet, but when I went into NESticle and tried to edit the black in Mega Man's eyes into red, every shade of black on the screen turned red. Is there a way to not have this happen, or is my idea an impossibility?

So, here's my first attempt at editing Mega Man's sprite, I tried to make his body look like Samus Aran's armor. Personally, I'm not that great at pixel art, but does it look good?

I might not be doing ROM hacking stuff for a couple of days, though. Minecraft: Pocket Edition just came out, so I'm probably gonna be playing that.

I think that Power Mega Man would be cool in a hack, but that's not what I'm going for (at least right now). I'm gonna use sprite layering to make Mega Man's/Samus's helmet red with a green visor. I'm just keeping Mega Man's face intact for a bit while I work on the body . I might also try to make it so that Samus's arm cannon is visible even when she's standing still. Thank you for helping though

Funny thing is, that picture is the one I was trying to make my sprite look like. I really like the shoulder pads on it. Maybe I'll look through Spriter's Resource for a suitable sprite set.

The picture is able to fit within the palette limitations as long as you get rid of the brown and grey, use the same two shades of green for both the cannon and visor, leave only the outline of the head and arm cannon, and use sprite layering to add the rest of the colors. The upside is that while that would take more tiles than normal Mega Man's face, Samus doesn't have facial expressions, so you can use the same sprites for most stuff. There will be slightly more sprite flicker though, but Samus will look amazing.

I couldn't find out who made that pic, so I'm going to make my own sprite sheet for Samus, it'll be a bit different than that pic. I will add a glimmering effect on her visor to replace Mega Man's blinking, and I'll make it so that her visor shines at the beginning when you press start. I can't show her face due to palette restrictions.
I am going to have fun making a sprite sheet Maybe I'll release it on Spriter's Resource after I finish with this hack so that other hackers can use it.

Edit: I'm currently trying to make the most detailed sprites I can while still staying within the 5-color limit. So far I think I can fit a bit of yellow on the arm cannon. It seems small, but the small details matter

Edit 2: The sprite sheet is coming along nicely. I'm using the Android pixel art app Isopix (Thank you for suggesting this app for me Model FZx ) I can really make better sprites because I'm not having to edit things one 8x8 tile at a time. It should be finished in the next few days.

I can't use that right now. I only have an Android tablet, and I can't get a PC anytime soon, so I'm working with what I have. Mike-Tech probably can use that though. I am trying to not rely on the sprite layering too much, as I don't want sprite flickering.

Also, I wanted to know, is it possible to have the weapon palettes be seperate from Megaman's/Samus's suit palette without messing up other palettes? I tried making Samus orange and yellow no matter what weapon was equipped, but I noticed that the Air Shooter tornadoes and Leaf Shield were both orange.

Those look pretty cool I'm afraid I can't come up with any names, I kinda suck at that. One thing I notice is that almost every one has a green gem on their forehead. Does that power them, and would that be part of the story, or is it just a small detail?
