Just a question: how do you import custom graphics (both objects and sprites) into SMW hacks? I'm aware of YY-CHR. ____________________ Jamie Dignam |

Definitely not using Nestopia 1.40!
That thing messes up AVI recordings and somehow desyncs the controls, and yeah hopefully I enjoy it. Now I have the GoodNES 3.23b full set on my external hard drive, what would the ROM name be? There's PRG0 and PRG1, both have a good US dump, which one is the version to use? ____________________ Jamie Dignam |

Yup
Thanks for the explanation on how to do the custom sprites. I'll probably start porting other graphics to the game (like the early SNES test program ones) and then I'll make my own ones using the explanations. At least when you guide, it's short and easier to understand than a universally written, long-blown tutorial. ____________________ Jamie Dignam |

Posted by Termingamer2-JD Why is this the first post in the thread? The board seems to handle the thread sequence in ID order but this post is a copy of when I replied to the 'FRESH AND VALID DUMPS' spam post, how did this thread break like this? Not really relevant but it has been irritating me since it ended up there. Has anyone else seen this? (And it has nothing to do with me using a really old browser since it does this in other browsers too) ____________________ Jamie Dignam |

You can have too many favourites, because they may be favourites in different aspects, like for its time, the music and gameplay, its ASM or whatever...
That's why I stated that you can select as many as you like for your favourite ROM hacks, even if they're not your favourite overall - they could be your favourite in any format (unless you're saying 'favourite worst hack' which is stupid). ROM hacks are original creations and should not be looked down onto by the big companies, rather the best ones should be an inspiration... ____________________ Jamie Dignam |

Does anyone have any of those pirate multicarts - like the ones that have multiple games repeated in 1 and inflated count, the small but really good ones?
Since I have every NES rom ever made (according to the last GoodNES set anyways) I've got them all on ROM, but of course not the carts. The most notable cart is the 260-in-1, it has 106 games in total (a bloody lot for pirate multicarts - so not far from half of the multicart). The better carts tend to be the ones with less games on them, though. How they are: they're Famicom carts with a thing attached to the motherboard (like early NES carts actually) so that they work in the US NES. Or something like that. Value: They can usually go for about £15 on eBay UK, so they're easy to pick up. However the US eBay don't like these carts and try to take them off the site. ____________________ Jamie Dignam |

This guide states most of the ROM letters used in GoodTools renaming.
If your game does not state any of these (most ROM sites remove the letters or such, or in the case of Emuparadise, extend the region, revision/version and languages and delete the rest), then get GoodTools and you can see what ROM you have downloaded. All experienced hackers should know these already, this is for new hackers who have started, or people just curious of all the extra tags in the ROM filename. * = in place of a number. This is the number of the type of ROM so the [b1] would be the first, [b2] second bad dump made... you get the idea? ROM Dump Status Codes[!] - Verified Good Dump. These are the exact same as the original version as reported. Obviously, this is the best option. [a*] - Alternative. Rereleases to fix bugs, added lockout chips, or to terminate the use of Game Genie, for examples. [b*] - Bad dump. These have errors in the dump rendering the game unplayable either altogether or to an extent. Avoid these altogether. [f*] - Fixed dump. If the normal one runs like crap on an emulator or multicart/flashcart/etc, then unofficial fixed ROMs can correct this. [h*] - Hacked dump. States that the header has been modified perhaps to bypass lockout chips or if the header was changed for a ROM hack as we all know what it is. [o*] - Overdump. Random rubbish data at the end of the ROM, that doesn't do anything at all to the game. [p*] - Pirate. Means the same thing as (Unl) but [p] is more common when the dump is from a pirate copy of a retail game - usually the title and copyrights have been removed or replaced with differences. [t*] - Trained ROM. Cheats were added to the game, which can be selected on a menu before booting the game up properly. This might have been done in the past to bypass Game Genie blocks. [!p] - Pending Dump. There's no dump that's verified but this is the closest possible one. GoodTools didn't have this until a while ago so most pending dumps are just left unmarked. Country Codes(A) - Australia (As) - Asia (B) - Brazil (C) - Canada (Ch) - China (D) - Netherlands (E) - Europe (F) - France (G) - Germany (Gr) - Greece (HK) - Hong Kong (I) - Italy (J) - Japan. Second recommendation for ROM hacks. (K) - Korea (Nl) - Netherlands (No) - Norway (R) - Russia (S) - Spain (Sw) - Sweden (U) - United States/North America. First recommendation for ROM hacks. (UK) - United Kingdom (W) - World - however this actually means J/U when E has no differences to the other two versions whenever it's used. (Unl) - Unlicenced. [p] means the exact same thing, though. (PD) - Public Domain (Unk) - Unknown Country Additional ROM Codes(REV*) - Revision Number. Usually used on NES and N64 games. (V*.**) - Version Number. Usually used on SNES, GBx and GBA games. (M*) - Amount of languages found on the menu when you start it up. I noticed though, this is usually on Game Boy and GBA games, for some reason. [T+*] - Most Recent Translation [T-*] - Old Translation, now obsolete (Alpha/Beta/Prototype/Pre-Release/Kiosk Demo) - Pre-release games, usually! (Hack) - ROM Hack. Might be preceded with the game name's abbreviation before the word Hack. (Menu) - Pirate Multicart which uses a menu and not a reset dipswitch. ZZZ_UNK - Unknown Classification. A ton of the Goodsets' ROM hacks attach this prefix. (*MBit) - Megabits of the ROM size. (*k) - Kilobits of the ROM size. (PAL) - PAL Display. (NTSC) - NTSC Display. The system specific letters aren't here, but I'm too lazy to put those on there right now anyway. Thanks to the Wikipedia GoodTools page, which lists all of these in the same order (couldn't get a copy of a GoodTools codes txt anywhere). ____________________ Jamie Dignam |

I don't think either Supervision 110 or 115 in 1 carts are dumped yet, actually. What unique games do they contain on them?
And I find multicarts can be a way of finding new games, although normally they're wrongly labelled. ____________________ Jamie Dignam |

I found out earlier what one was, when I posted the ROM letter definitions thread
And good to hear the fix has been done! Does it make the physics unbuggered or not? Although, it IS possible to complete SMW with the broken physics anyway. ____________________ Jamie Dignam |

Oh, and yeah I have the GoodNES 3.23b collection. Loads of interesting games in there.
Where's this wiki? I'd like to hear about it. ____________________ Jamie Dignam |

I propose a new suggestion:
BOARD2 WIKI http://acmlm.kafuka.org/wiki This means that we can find all the info we need for ROM hacks and hacking, whcih would be nice. Of course, it might not be fully active but I think it will turn into a great resource for ROM hackers, we could move the Acmlm's documents onto this wiki and improve on them also. ____________________ Jamie Dignam |

Talk about the Donkey Kong Country (SNES/GBA) and Donkey Kong Land (SGB).
The series was the first to use pre-rendered 3D graphics, courtesy of Silicon Graphics, which gave the introduction of realistic graphics and 3D into the video game industry. It was also one of the first platformers to introduce a co-op play mode - two players on the same screen. The story for the SNES games are original and the series has not suffered from the usual 'milking' made of some other platform games (such as Mario). The most memorable thing for many people though from this series is the music. Composed by David Wise for the first two games (he also recomposed the GBA version of DKC3), everyone seems to have loved the music. While the game doesn't seem to end up much on the Overrated games point, unlike some extremely popular and well-liked games, people some see the first as overrated compared to its sequels, but otherwise they are actually enjoyable and not just liked for their groundbreaking graphics, gameplay and audio. ------------- From what was a barely known (except for Battletoads) British company (Rare), when DKC was released, they were one of the most famous until 2002, when Microsoft decided to buy them - because Microsoft are too lazy to make their own games, they simply buy their surrounding companies. ------------- The Super Game Boy's versions were based on their respective DKC games, but also had similar graphics however toned down. These games were nearly as enjoyable as the original versions, and obviously they can be played anywhere as long as you had up to a GBA for portable use. One irritiating thing is where Microsoft ordered to take down DKC from the Wii Virtual Console, because of who developed it. This is one of the worst things to happen on VC, definitely. Discuss here. Everyone's a DKC fanboy/fangirl right? (Except this so-called 'modern youth' who spend their time bashing any video game more than 12 months old.) ____________________ Jamie Dignam |

I have a use for romhacking.net, because I'll be coding an NES emulator, I might need their documentation along with NESdev's.
So it might be of good use to register there! ____________________ Jamie Dignam |

Ah good. When should I implement this into the thing? I think my first demo will be vanilla or near-vanilla, but when is a good time, mid-development or at the end for a final touch?
I don't want to make everything too early or late that's why. ____________________ Jamie Dignam |

Probably so. It's definitely going to be hard times but it's a challenge, and something I can do for once.
I saw this mentioned in nesdev too but I'm still going to try, even without prior coding knowledge in other programs before making this. What I'm aiming for is high accuracy and speed running of all mappers, NSF creator and other utilities built-in (and in English), and other things. However I only plan on emulating the first 7 mappers on v0.1, and expanding it highly after. ____________________ Jamie Dignam |

Dunno at the moment. I'll take suggestions as to what to play, though - perhaps something lesser known and good? ____________________ Jamie Dignam |
