Hi,

I've never posted to a forum like this, and I really just learned how to hack a large portion of different games within the last week. I've already changed a significant portion of the original Final Fantasy 1, including all new graphics for a lot of different things, new script, etc. I really am trying to make something special but I've hit a wall trying to edit the game music and change it. I've started messing with Famitracker, but I have seen a number of posts when searching that the NSF file that is produced by Famitracker can't just be plugged into the game. I've searched everywhere I could think of for editing NES music or specifically FF1 music, but everything I find leads me to a dead end. I know a hacker named Grond did FF ++ and it had new music in it, so I know its possible. I just can't figure it out. Please, any help or tools to do this would be appreciated.

Hello everybody,

I posted about altering the music of Final Fantasy 1 in another section on this site a few days ago. While I've made little headway in that venture, I have been editing sprites to use after the class change. So far I've got 1/3 of a new Wh. Wizard, a new Black Wizard, and a sprite for a Sage. The problem is, I can't decide on what color I like the best out of the possible Sage colors. I also have an overabundance of blue/brown/tan characters (the ninja's colors and sprite are going to be edited too), leaving me with the Knight and the White Wizard as the only established Red/White/Tan members left after the class change. I'd like to get some input on what version you guys think is best. I certainly appreciate any input that can be offered.

Just follow the link below since I can't figure out how to just post them.

Thank you for the reply. I also really liked the Red one, but since he was standing in for my Red Wizard/Sage sprite, i just couldn't get used to him swinging a sword, since its basically Tellah from FF4. I ended up using the Blue/Brown/Gold and making him my Black Wizard. I found a really cool sprite of a "Dark" Version of a Red Mage that another person had made, and I used that for my Red Wizard/Sage pic. I will put up some more pics of the custom sprites that I've made as the project goes along.

Hello,

I'm working on a hack of the original Final Fantasy. It is based on an early version of Grond's Final Fantasy because he had already rebalanced the characters and the enemies. So far, I've edited virtually every enemy in the game (with the exception of the bosses). Some have new attacks, some are updated versions of the same enemy. Many of the enemy sprites were taken from later FF games or Final Fantasy ++. Many of the class sprites were taken from later games, and 3 are uniquely original to my game. Ideally, I'm going to do a completely new soundtrack (although that has given me fits, so I'm working on graphics first). I've created a Facebook page and project homepage to post images and updates. Both locations serve as references for anyone who is interested in hacking Final Fantasy. I'm including a Spriter's Resources section in addition to my own images. I welcome anyone who is interested in visiting or making comments. Please follow the links below.

As an old school purist, I would say the old tried and true method of making a copy and using a very fine pen is the best inking method. I was very into comic and cartoon art when I was younger and I loved Rollerball pens to ink my work. NEVER ink an original though. I learned that through years and years of drawing. I apologize if you weren't talking about physically inking a picture. I just thought I would reply since I felt like I could add to the discussion.

Thank you so much for the kind words. I'm very impressed with how the project is turning out. I didn't even know that the NES could do the things that I'm accomplishing with the project. I'm still having problems figuring out how to insert pictures directly into posts, so until I can figure it out, I'm going to post links to my Dropbox files for those who would rather just go right to the images. I have had a few people like my Facebook page too so far, and I really appreciate the support. I've edited approximately 9 of the total locations (all of the castles technically, although the Castle of Ordeals is giving me problems right now) and have really made some headway since I started reworking my original redesign. I hope everyone enjoys the work that I'm putting in. I feel like I'm creating the Final Fantasy game that I would have liked to play as a kid =-)

The different aspects of the different locations were all inspired by different games in the Final Fantasy series, and Grond's projects especially. I really feel like I'm making something that Grond would be happy with. I really wish we could have collaborated on this project. Once I get the sprites the way that I want them, I will tackle the musical aspects. Hope everyone enjoys.

Hello all,

I've made a significant amount of progress since my last post. I have completely retooled or redone all of the areas of the game with the exceptions of the Gurgu Volcano, the Sunken Shrine, Grond's Bahamut's room, and the past version of the Temple of Fiends. I have borrowed very liberally from many different projects and I will include a detailed thank you and changes made section when this actually sees release. As always, feedback is appreciated and welcome. Please visit my Final Fantasy Reconstructed Facebook page that was linked earlier in this thread if you'd like to see more completed work. I'm only linking about 1/3 of the total images right now. Hope everyone enjoys.

I took screenshots using two different emulators, which is the only explanation I can think of for the different sizes. Pause for dinner. Will post more in a bit

Right on buddy!! I look forward to it. I'm posting things here, RHDN, and on my Facebook page for Final Fantasy Reconstructed. Figure I'll generate some interest. Since I couldn't post my Sky Palace pics on RHDN, I'm going to post them over here as an exclusive outside of the FB page.

Only got involved in this discussion because of Amarcum81 being my good friend. Yes, the climbing speed in Megaman 3-6 was much faster than in 2, although if I remember correctly 2 was faster than 1's climbing speed. Would be nice to improve 2 to be more like 3-6. Glad the Protoman project continues =-)

Thank you. I originally started this hack as a graphics edit of one of Grond's rebalance/bugfix hacks. I had attempted to go back and replicate the parts of the patch that I liked and apply some additional bug fixes that Grond had not fixed (I think that they might not have been available at the time). I spent 2 days applying every bugfix that I could find to a "vanilla" rom, but was unable to replicate the original game that I had started with. Since I took a few days off, I have just now gotten back into my editing of my original project. Will definitely start putting up some more screenshots soon.

Some new screenshots of some palette edits for the Marsh Cave and for the re-worked Mirage Tower. I tried to do a more "rusty" look on the Mirage Tower because it seemed like Tiamat wouldn't have really cared about maintaining the Tower like he would the actual Sky Palace (Especially since in my version you can clearly see that its above the clouds). Constructive criticism and comments are always welcome.

I included the original edit comparisons just to show how far the project has come since I originally started editing the game. The Mirage Tower shares the sprite set with the Marsh Cave originally. I thought that I could use the Sky Palace sprites there and that would allow me to change either one or more of the locations that use the Ice Cave sprite set. I think if anything I'm going to change Thorbardin (Dwarf Cave) to look more like the Magnetic Cave in Final Fantasy IV, or turn it into a castle that goes into the rocks. Either way, I've got an entire half a sprite set that can be used for something else entirely now.

More updated screenshots. Just finished the update to the Gurgu Volcano. The Marsh Cave and Ice Cave edits towards the end are probably going to be the final versions because I don't feel like I can mess with them any more and make them any better.

As always, comments and constructive criticism are welcome.

As always, comments, critiques, or recommendations are welcome. Please check out the numerous threads and pages if you wish to learn more. Open beta v 2.0 will be released soon and I've already had requests to do another Lets Play series, so I hope interest will remain through the finale of the process.
