Can anyone tell me what I'm missing here?

I've been walking around the overworld trying to figure out how to get into the boss dungeon for like three hours. I've beaten all three dungeons, gotten all the items I can think to find (the hammer doesn't seem to be anywhere in the Light world) and the castle gate is in the way and I can't get past these columns here. I don't think there's a single spot in the overworld that I can get to that I haven't walked through yet.

I kept getting excited thinking I finally found something new but it seems like every cave that is somewhat difficult to get to ends up being a money making game. Those old men are everywhere.

So then what am I missing? Do I need to trigger something with Error there on the bridge in front of the gate that will open it, or am I missing an item that lets me either destroy or bypass the gate entirely?

I'm starting to get kinda frustrated, the overworld is fairly large but it feels like a lot of it is just devoid of anything important and I don't really feel like I have any indication of where I need to go next.
