Since the graphics are now CHR-ROM how would one go about swapping graphics. Keep in mind I'm a game artist and don't have ASM experience. With my Metroid project (Rogue Dawn) Snarfblam provided some code I could use in the Editor "Editroid" that would apply to the screen loading code where I applied it. Basically mid level I was able to swap out a 1/4 sheet up to a full sheet of tiles. It's allowed for some interesting diversity and complex animations in my level design. I can see something like this coming in handy for a game like Zelda 1, the original graphics were pretty repetitive. If I did a Zelda 1 hack I'd want to create unique tiles for all the dungeons and various areas of the over world.

I'm considering various options for my next project since my current project is nearly complete. Creative freedom is on the top of my criteria list for whatever I end up working on.

RetroRain, you should consider including some documentation with your mapper hacks. I noticed your recent releases don't include any notes, it seems like it would be extremely helpful for anyone lesser experienced attempting to make use of of them.

Rad Racer was an great game at its time of release, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I still have the cart from when I was a little tot. Nice work, this one looks like fun, I'll give it a go.

I have a torrent I downloaded years ago that contains around 400 hack files. Just this weekend I rediscovered it on a back-up drive. I compared some of the files to what's available at RHDN and so far about 80% are previously unreleased. I need to dig through it and see what's worth releasing. Some of them look fairly promising.

I also have a NES Simpson's hack that's really good. A complete rework of the game, there's something wrong with the patch though and it contains some graphical errors. I know for sure this one isn't on RHDN, I looked for it a while ago so I could get a clean patch file.

I was mistaken, I checked the properties of the wrong folder, this sucker has 1072 files in it. They're all dated 2003 and earlier so we're talking over ten years old, some fifteen!

I'll see if that hack is in there Googie, I know there's a bunch of Castlevania hacks in there, I saw them earlier today when I was fishing out the Metroid hacks so I could post them over at the Metroid Construction forum. I'm on my tablet now so I'll check next time I'm on my PC.

XTTX, I doubt it's available as a torrent anymore since we're talking years ago when I downloaded it. From what I can tell roughly half of the hacks are just questionable (crappy) sprite hacks of various games, Super Mario 1 being the greatest offender. There's bound to be a few gems in there though, I'll share whatever I sort out

I seem to recall seeing a hack for Zelda 1 recently that allows you to at least have different graphics in each dungeon. Maybe it could be useful?

This would be nice, also if there where a way to swap out tile sheets on the over world that would make for a great deal of creative freedom. I'd seriously consider creating a new Z1 experience as well.

EDIT: BTW, sorry Googie, I didn't find your CV3 hack in the zip file.

This is really awesome RetroRain, Rad Racer was one of the games I had back in the day. I still have my original cart. Thanks for the hack!

Matal3ao at Romhacking.net is working on a similar project. Maybe you two can exchange notes:

He has been making a lot of progress on some of the more complicated issues such as how to edit the final palace for example.
