Metroid Incursion has been updated to version 1.1 - 5/5/2014

Original Post:

Please use this link to go to the Metroid Construction forum thread containing the download link (at the bottom of the first post).

http://forum.metroidconstruction.com/index.php/topic,3101.0.html

EDIT: I can't seem to get this link to activate on this thread....

Final game title: Metroid - Incursion

100% Complete - Snarfblams Metroid Plus improvements where successfully applied to this MOD

I have included 2 .IPS files, one with Snarfblams Metroid Plus improvements and one with the standard
weapons and no mini map. I found that the wave+ice made the final area fairly easy. If you want more
of a challenge I would say play through with the normal version first then with the PLUS features second.

Metroid_Incursion_1.1.IPS = Standard Weapons and Original Gameplay
Metroid_Incursion_1.1_Plus.IPS = Added pause mini map, Wavy Ice weapon, Save game feature

Description of modifications:

All levels 100% redesign
New title screen graphics
New tile graphics - All levels (New level themes)
New creature graphics (A few classics will remain)
Animations created for all levels
Level design focused on fun factor, game play, attempt at minimizing frustration (There are some difficult
areas).
Snarfblams save game and mini map hack applied

The IPS is currently not available due to an issue pointed out by a player. As is there is an issue with a player entering a certain part of norfair without the missiles causing them to get stuck and not able to acquire the high jump. I play tested about a dozen times and don't know how I missed it.

I'm going to correct the issue and get feedback from the people who have played it, make some changes and then release again.

Congratulations on a fantastic release, truly a gift to those who have a passion and love for the classic NES genres of games!

I should have the final area wrapped up this week. There's still a lot of polishing up along with some minor editing here and there. Optomons custom music is sounding pretty sweet, I'm not sure how long he'll need to wrap it up but he's making good progress. ASM modifications are pretty much done, only needing some minor tweaking. Thanks for the encouragement, we should have this hack wrapped up before the end of the year.

Metroid Rogue Dawn is now playable from start to finish!

We're going to be starting the first round of play testing pretty soon. Beta 1 will be primarily focused on balancing of difficulty. We'll also be testing other in game features such as the modified weapons and healing elements in the game.

Ill post some new screenshot candy soon.

Soundjunky, no offense but I think it would be more appropriate to start a new thread on the topic of "repros". This thread has been dirtied up enough. A lot of the drama seen should have been handled through PM. This topic should have remained about the game and it's development not derailing into what people are doing with this and various other roms outside of development. There are strong opinions on both sides of the "repro" debate, I too wouldn't mind an open honest debate on the topic but it should take place in a thread designated for that purpose.

Here's my Zelda 2 editor wish list:
(Brain storming a bit here, some of these would be difficult to develop)

First the obvious stuff:
Palette editor
Over world editor (allow modification of tile properties would be a nice bonus)
Side scroll editor (tile properties modification?)
(Allow placement of enemies + add/delete)
Item location editor (where found, allow start with items)
Magic editor (names, locations found, and usage cost, start with)
Enemy damage values (and other similar values)

The fancy stuff Santa probably won't bring:
Incorporate ROM expansion in editor to allow greater design freedom (new mapper?)
(A built in .ips patch is applied to a vanilla ROM)
Split dungeons into separate graphics and music (so each can be unique)
Modify over world to allow additional tiles to be created/used by the user
Modify dungeons to allow additional tiles, combos (16x16) to be created/used
Music editor (even a simple text based like Metroid Tuner would work great)

You could create an IPS patch that the editor is designed to work with. The editor would apply the IPS patch and then allow editing from there.

I don't know what your goals consist of but I'm 100% positive if you were to incorporate some of the more advanced features such as ROM expansion, splitting the dungeons, and allowing for a greater quantity of tiles both in the over world and side scrolling areas you would see some exceptional hacks created with your editor.

If I missed anything or think of something new for the list Ill update this post.

Screenshots in the first post have been updated!

We are now fully converted from MMC1 to MMC3! This has allowed us to further push all aspects of the hack to the next level. In addition to the original 5 in game areas we are now actively building 1 completely new area as well as additional sub areas attached to the existing areas. The sub areas further expand the themes depicted in the screenshots in the first post.

Sorry, I didn't include any screenshots of the final area, I'm going to leave that to in game discovery for those who choose to play the hack when it's released.

We now have 2 new items in game:

Wall jump
Spring ball jump

Additionally we are adding and modifying the way other features behave such as the bombs (More details later). A few other surprises are being reserved for in game discovery as well. (see post #1 for additional ASM modifications).

Interesting, I'm going to check this out, more Metroid 1 content is always a good thing.

Thanks to all involved.

EDIT: Did the pause map make it into the upgrade? It would be a great addition, a lot of these older metroid level hacks are very maze like which can get rather frustrating.

RetroRain, are you planning on starting a Metroid project other than the mapper conversion? I'd certainly be interested in seeing another quality Metroid hack in the works, there aren't too many high quality M1 hacks out there.

Me and Snarfblam have been able to pull off everything mentioned in Inccubus's post with our MMC3 Metroid project "Rogue Dawn". We're in the last 15% of development I'd say, definitely a 2015 release. Optomon is working on a custom sound track for the project.

With as much as we've been able to pull off under MMC3, I'd love to see what you're able to do with MMC5.

I'm a huge fan of all the Ghost'n Goblins themed games (NES being my favorite). That said, your project sounds pretty awesome! Have you considered creating your own unique Ghost'n Goblins game rather than molding the Megaman engine into a copy of the arcade version of the game? (A unique Ghost'n Goblins based on the Megaman engine).

Releasing an updated graphics version of Ghost'n Goblins (NES) would be pretty neat also, I've considered working on a project like that in the past. The first game I dabbled in ROM hacking with was Ghost'n Goblins (level modification), the editor was rather limited as was my skills at the time.

A little Metroid/G&G graphics hack I played around with about a year ago just for fun:

@grimlock.

DAMN, I love those screenshots! :-) When do you expect that to be completed? I would definitely sit down and play through that some day.

Thanks, we should be done this year, originally we were aiming for a summer release but you know how that goes. All of the areas are constructed, Snarfblam has the ASM near complete. Optomons music is coming along well. I'm working on polishing the areas up, adding storyline elements.

We aren't too far away from our second round of play testing. If you're interested I can add you to our list of play testers. We're doing a closed non-public beta playtest, invitation only. I'm sure you would be able to offer a unique perspective since you have a considerable amount of hacking experience. We have a pretty unique and talented group of play testers contributing, we'd certainly love to get your feedback as well.

Replace the original metroid number and letter fonts, it'll make it look more upto date.
Best ones is super metroid and you can find them near samus gfx in yy-chr.

That's a great idea, I hadn't given the font much consideration.

Thanks Mike, that would be handy.

Regarding the timeline of the hack, it takes place just before Metroid 1. The hack is designed around the background given in the Metroid 1 instruction manual. Basically it illustrates how the metroid species was discovered by a research team on planet SR388. When their ship was preparing to take a specimen from the planet to a distant research station it was attacked and ultimately the specimen fell into the hands of a pirate group who later took the specimen to planet ZEBES.

The game begins just after the research vessel is attacked high above SR388 and forced to crash land on the planet's surface. You play as Ridleys shadow agent/assassin, awaken from your hibernation sleep ordered to seek out and recover a sample of the specimen. You have no knowledge of your origins, the only human in a pirate group led by a ruthless over lord by the name of "Ridley". The only part of your past life that remains is a name "Dawn Aran". Your entire existence spanning from early childhood has been catered to mold you into the ultimate dark operative, manipulated and distorted to carry out the will of the pirate leadership.

Obviously the main character is blood related to Samus Aran. Dawn Aran was abducted from a colony by the pirate faction in the event that killed Samus's family and the rest of the colony. Dawn is thought to have perished long ago. There was never a mention of a sister in any comic series that I am aware of but it could easily be that Samus had cousins and other family members in the colony she lived in as a child.

Ultimately "Metroid - Rogue Dawn" reveals why Samus is so obsessed with eradicating the Metroid threat.... Samus's own family is directly responsible.

Anyway, that's probably more than you wanted to know. The storyline is not based on the comic series, it's designed mostly to sync up to the M1 story more or less. It's mostly finalized but it probably needs some additional fine tuning.
