Erm... Sorry... I pronounce it "white-asprin-wow" (explains my mistake) Correct me if I'm somehow wrong.

That's correct. The 'h' is sort of the opposite of a silent letter; it isn't in the word but it is sounded out. At least, that's how I read it to myself, as I've never introduced myself to anyone as my internet screenname

Yeah, it's easy to say what we could do when we were 14, simply because we're not. It's the internet and it's easy to claim superiority in a million ways. I just don't get my rocks off nor raise my self-esteem by insulting little kids on the 'net. The only people I hold to the highest standards of intelligence would be those most capable of meeting said standards. Nonetheless, I'm not saying nobody should insult him, that's a personal choice; however, I am allowed to find it really stupid and a complete waste of time.

If you are going to insult anyone over the internet, it is for personal fun and personal fun only. Any other reason generally makes you pathetic.

That being said, HURRRRRR

Even a week of complete nonbuying would put a sizable dent in their pockets -- but it'd take a lot more than that.

Consider their absurd profits and American instinct to not use public transportaiton, and...

NO NO NO NO NO IT WOULD NOT. EVERYONE WHO THINKS THIS WILL DO EVEN A CENT OF DAMAGE IS BEING STUPID.

EDIT: I had a long post typed out here but I just decided to delete it. It isn't worth yelling about this. Just read sonic and fail's post: even a week of nonbuying would not cost the gas companies a SINGLE CENT unless you actually USED LESS GAS.

I was talking about a week, if you had actually bothered to read my post. I'm well aware that just one day would do nothing.

I would assume people would look into alternate means of transportation, too, but really -- this whole idea is still impossible and what we're discussing is only speculation.

Americans love their epenis cars too much.

I read the post. One week and one day costs the gas companies the same grand total, $0, unless you actually use less gas. If you fill up at the start of the week and it lasts until the end of the week you have changed absolutely nothing.

Point made, being, we'll pay for gas no matter what, we don't have a choice. We'll either pay for it or steal it, and if prices get way out of control, I fear that many more will start to pump and run.

The guy who wrote Freakonomics wrote a good article about these kinds of theories and peak oil.

I can't seem to find it right now, but while theft might be an issue, the general idea was that as price rises demand will actually fall. More people will be willing to turn to public transportation instead of paying increasing gas prices, more people will be willing to carpool to save money, and more people will avoid road trips by car in favor of other means of transportation.

I don't see what you people are complaining about.

Becuse that is cheap gas. I think the price should be more expensive so it can go towards more ecological investments.

This will happen naturally over time; the only concern for ecologists is whether the natural weaning off gas will happen quick enough to help prevent disasters like global warming.

I think it'd be better to governmentally regulate oil by rationing, rather than raising the price at the pump, anyways.

Higher gas prices (and I mean, dollars worth) would probably cause a meltdown in the US, due to most cities not having any method of public transportation.

If it suddenly shot up this would be very true, but since it is more likely to occur as a gradual process, then we are more likely to slowly integrate alternative solutions as gas prices rise.

Screw America. It's way too screwed up to even be worthwhile anyway. The government just makes the rich richer, the culture is just awful (especially the music), Americans can't use public transportation or live in cities...I can't wait to move to Europe forever and never set foot in the USA again.

You realize that you will just be trading one set of problems for another, correct?

I want to critique pretty much every point you made but since this an oil thread I'll leave it at that.

I just want to mention one thing here, sort of as the alternative view point (which nobody has so far expressed), and then I will hopefully be done with this thread:

I know it's ridiculous to try and copyright / censor a number, and that it will get around the internet eventually all the way, and that the MPAA will just have to get a new system for all it's new HDDVDs. However, do at least feel some pity for the workers in this situation; not the starlets and directors getting paid millions to make these movies but the tons of ordinary dudes involved in movie production. While this may be a cool tech toy and stuff, you still cannot justify internet piracy (which, if I understand correctly, this will lead to). The movie industry is going to lose still more money this year because of people downloading HDDVDs - Maybe not a lot this year, but if they didn't fight back I bet it'd be a lot worse. Maybe you don't like it's prices, or maybe you don't think the majority of movies are quality, but that still gives you no right to use their product without paying for it; if you hate the movie industry for something the proper thing would be to not buy OR download movies.

All I'm saying is that, if you like the movies that the industry produces, you can show your support by actually paying for them and not just downloading copies made via this byte.

The internet doesn't count, since anyone who tries to act the asshole over the internet in no way affects the other people's lives in real life. Everyone I know has certain traits, and some of them can get annoying, but no one goes out of their way to ruin someone else's life. I suppose it comes with the whole college thing and all.

You greatly underestimate the patheticness to be found on the internet

The one thing I will say is that this kind of thread is why he does not post on ||board anymore.

Why does that even matter? bassboard is irrelevant.

Also, I'm guessing you guys started the dumb misquoting fad... am I right?

1. All I was saying is that there was some writing on the wall here, and he if acts the same as he did on the other board he will probably not last here either. Key words being "if he acts the same as he did on ||board." If you can get banned from ||board - which is quite a feat considering ||Bass' strong stance on free speech - you can get banned from here.

2. The misquoting fad is not only as old as Acmlm's Board but as old as message board quoting was available. It is also long past it's hay-day, so I wouldn't quite call it a fad anymore.

He hasn't done anything wrong in this thread, so I don't see what you mean. It may be a bad idea for a thread but he's done nothing explicitly wrong or ban-worthy here, not even close. People may not change by themselves, but environments have powerful impacts on them nonetheless.

I don't want to get too much into it, but you can not break any of the rules and still be pretty worthless. Just take a look at Acmlmboard's past and you'll see a whole host of characters that were tumors on the place's side but still hung around by not technically doing anything wrong. (Shyguy was a fucking great example of this.)

Well actually, by definition if your IQ is a certain level you are automatically a genius.

But a lot of people agree that EQ (emotional quotient, aka People Skills) is a much better predictor of success than IQ
