Try and get a job at wherever you're going first. That'd be my advice; that way you avoid cash loss during the downtime between when you move and when you start work. Debt sucks.

Furthermore, if you're looking for low cost of living you might want to live just outside of a major city. (I might be biased because I prefer this anyways, I hate city traffic.)

Obviously, out in Washington (the state) there's a ton of programming jobs needed. It's way too expensive to live in silicon valley, but you could get a job in the valley and live on the outskirts again. For a major city, Seattle wouldn't be too far away; you might even find a good spot in the city.

FYI, you should know that I've lived in Maryland my whole life, so I really don't have that much experience with moving, and none with moving across the country. MD's living costs are probably too high for what you're looking for. I'm sure there's tech jobs needed in DC / Annapolis / Baltimore, though.

Mon / Wed 10am - 5:30 pm = school
Friday = 10am-11am school
(The commute takes about 45 minutes both ways)

24-28 hours of my free time every week = work

Yeah, I'm pretty busy.

Whenever these threads pop up it seems like everyone in college is taking a bunch of math/computer science courses, which was actually the path I was going down until I recently switched my major to psychology. I'm definitely enjoying school more, so if you want to get a useless degree then this is a path to consider~!

I'm thinking about doing grad school if that means anything

edit - I typed this before dr_death's post showed up to prove me wrong so (middle finger)

I was in computer science, then I switched to psych, then I switched to philosophy.

My general career advice is get a degree no matter how useless it is. Even if you are working in something completely outside of your major, the simple fact that you have a college degree will open doors for you that you wouldn't be able to access otherwise.

What do you do between 12:00 and 2:30 on Tuesday, BooUrns?

That's quite the gap for nothing.

You can always find something to do with time. It's around lunchtime, which can take from 30 minutes to an hour, and then the rest of the time can be spent doing homework or being at the library (either studying or being online)

Go. It's always better to have a job offer in your pocket, and if you want to get a different job you can use it as a starting point for negotiating pay. ("Well, the guys I'm with now are paying me X, so...")

How does this entire "job" thing work out? How much does a job take out of you?

Depends. Obviously, it will take the minimum of the number of hours you are working.

Think about this though; are you gonna have to prepare lessons for students? Will you have to help tutor your students after your hours in order to ensure their understand of the topic? It's when you put in extra hours past your basic paid hours that a job really starts to take its toll.

You and your sister really shouldn't take action without your mother being onboard. That's the first thing I think. It's her property, so at the end of the day you need her to say the final word on what she's allowing.

Furthermore, I wouldn't try to make this more ugly than it has to be. You all just need to tell her that it isn't working out and you need her out by a pre-selected date. That way she has some time to work out her affairs and find a new place to live; while she may be a bitch, she's still human, so be the better man and treat her humanely. What Grey Mario said should be an absolute last resort.

Also, try to relax. Don't let one asshole ruin your life. I was 16 once too; I've been in your shoes and I feel like you're probably blowing it out of proportion. Just because one person is being a douche doesn't mean you should sit around and be miserable; there will always be pricks you have to put up with in life. Learning how to float above all that shit is an important skill.

Unfortunately, there is a good reason for this; older people just tend to act their age better.

When it's over you will remember, and when you see it you will believe.

Anyone else pick up Halo 3? I got mine a little early, but I didn't go unline until just last night.

Notable balance changes for multiplayer:

-Plasma pistol can no longer be dual-wielded with.
-Plasma sword takes longer to recover from a swing, and can actually run out of energy.
-Plasma pistol can now be used to actually damage vechicles.
-Assault rifle can no longer be dual-wielded, although the SMG from the first game has actually returned and is dual-wieldable.

I'm still trying to figure out what to make of the new items. I'm hoping playing through the single player will illuminate the use for some of these items, because I can not figure out what the spike grenades are for for the life of me.

Also, the radar jammer and shield bubble are really fucking cool.

Uh, don't you mean the other way around? I'm not a big halo junkie, but I know that you couldn't dual wield with the assault rifle but could dual wield the smg, which was introduced in the second game.

You know, I think I have my guns mixed up.

I just noticed that your starting weapon can no longer be dual-wielded, not allowing you to get two guns just by offing another player.

Skreeny you are right about the battle rifle, but that's an entirely different weapon

All in all though, I like the new balance changes so far. No longer does the person with the sword go on a killing rampage until he gets stickied (or makes a stupid mistake), no longer does plasma pistol + any weapon rape all other weapon combos...

I REALLY like the new Spartan Laser weapon. You have to charge it for about 3 seconds (a long time in Halo time) while pointing it at an enemy, but after it's done charging it will basically obliterate whatever's in the center of your screen at the moment.

If anyone wants to hit me up for a random-assed game, my tag is mechajesuarmy, because bill gates won't let me have the word "Jesus" in my name. I mostly play ranked team slayer, although I'm not against any of the other game modes.

I'm starting to appreciate a lot of the more subtle changes now. I'm also really starting to hate the plasma rifles, and really love the battle rifle.

I'm in the market for a new laptop. My desktop is 6 years old now and just slowly becoming obsolete; I can barely run anything on here without downgrading the settings to oblivion. I plan to use the laptop for both school and gaming purposes. Therefore I obviously need a good processor, decent RAM, a good graphics card, ect.

My price range might be able to strech all the way up to $1900 if I get a really good laptop for it, though I think $1700 might be more pleasing to my wallet.

Anybody got any reccomendations about what brand to go for? Right now I'm looking at an HP and trying to stay the hell away from Dell (I've seen their laptops break down before), but if anyone has any good reccomendations I'm all ears.

Thanks for reading, by the way; I realize that I'm being a little selfish by asking for help like this. I just seriously have no clue how well-made different laptops are.

Heh, just don't settle anything less than 2GB RAM and a dual core processor. Judging the price you are willing to pay, it will hardly be much of a problem. For each generation I been on, memory usually turns out to be the biggest bottleneck... so it doesn't hurt to be generous here if you plan to keep it a few years.

HP is usually a reliable brand of computers. Support from them been superb, ever sent replacement parts one time without requiring the broken part once Support experience might differ as I'm talking about HP Sweden after all.

Apple's Macbook are supposed to be of a high quality, but might be a little bit pricey... and isn't exactly made for gaming either. Might still be worth considering though.

I hear you on the memory. The HP model I'm looking at (dv9500t) takes $400 extra to upgrade to 4GB, but I might do it just so I don't end up having an obsolete POS 3 years down the line. The problem is that if I get the 2GB my total comes out to $1570, which is definitely in my price range, but the 4GB bumps that up to $1970, which is more than I really wanted to pay for the laptop...

I did consider a Macbook, but like you said, it isn't really built for gaming.

I'm worried about getting the right graphics card, too. Most laptops I've seen available have at best this "128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400 MS," which looking at the actual NVIDIA website, doesn't look too hot. The model I'm looking at has the "256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600 MS," which is apparently a lot better. Does this really make that big a difference?
