I read the original poster's remarks, and I must say, I firmly negate this nonsensical claim, that people '[lack] the capacity for true cruelty.' This is ridiculous, as people are not moral beings, but simply animals motivated by a system of incentives and disincentives. Consider the case of Heart of Darkness or Lord of the Flies. In the absence of an eminant spectre of a social power, people will disregard what would otherwise be taboo. Hume argues that this is not unjust, but merely justice is reflected differently in each moment--thus his claim of maximization of utility is wholly justified, on another note.

But what if you could get arrested for acting like a criminal? If there is a criminal that pretends to be a schoolteacher, then the schoolteacher is acting like a criminal. So long as the rules say "acting like" rather than "being", it's fair.
