Hi. I'm a noob. I know basically nothing about romhacks, except that I enjoy playing them, and found the forum via the archive while digging for (disappointingly limited) info regarding Zelda 3. I don't know what drama occurred but the userbase looks much smaller now, hopefully there are still new projects in the works.

Programming is way over my head, but as a passable artist, I'm currently learning/practicing pixel art and spriting in my spare time. Even a simple gfx hack of Zelda 3 is far beyond my capabilities right now, but who knows, if BlackMagic ever comes out and if I ever get my ass in gear I might be able to produce something worthwhile in the future. Got to start somewhere, after all.

Anyway, I'm glad to be part of the community and hope I can learn something

I don't believe in anything "greater", although I fully admit that I wish I could.

The Ancient Egyptian gods interest me, as well as the syncretism of Egyptian, Greek and Roman gods. I do resent the early Christian and Muslim iconoclasts (i.e. the ones who destroyed all the art of pagan deities they could get their hands on) and extreme fundamentalism leaves a bad taste in my mouth but that's because I'm a history nerd, not because I object to any particular religion.

Pretty much, I believe in personal liberty up to the point of unnecessarily interfering in other peoples' lives or wanton destruction. I also disagree with religions that encourage human superiority over every other life form on the planet, though they made perfect sense when the texts were written, in an age of overpopulation and large scale destruction of the environment they are outdated.

But then, religion has always seemed to change with the times, and it's all up to personal interpretation anyway.

There is a lot of talent hidden on DA, but ultimately it's just proof that just because something is popular doesn't mean it's good. Even of the decent stuff it's a total crapshoot what becomes popular, for instance this is award-winning and on the front page while this has like 20 views in 6 years.

My account I mostly use just for fan arts and some of my better notebook doodles, and I'm not nearly good enough (or have enough spare time) to join Concept art. I mostly stick to Worth1000. Fun and laid-back, but has a low tolerance for trolls or crap and won't hesitate to give brutal criticism.

As for the majority of DA, it's 90% poorly drawn anime and miscellaneous plagiarized crap. I think Encyclopedia Dramatica really hit the nail on the head on its analysis of DA, particularly with the article on smudge painting (that page is SFW but no promises if you follow any links)... And since CS5 introduced the thrice damned mixer brush tool, there's more where that came from.

Reading, working, generally killing time until I can move to a place that is more than 15 square feet. It's hard to play DDR, and I miss my art supplies and my cat.

I also have the most bizarre sunburn right now. It's only a few inches near my collarbone I missed with the sunblock, but holy fuck, it is as bad as when I burnt my arm on the grill. Fun fact: I compared my skin with an albino dude I sat next to on the bus and mine was paler. A product of Russian/Irish ancestry no doubt.

I've done some fun things, lots of festivals in the area, went to a safari reserve up north (cheetahs like catnip and sort of meow, how about that) and visited my family.

Otherwise it's just same shit different day, I don't like the heat very much and the part of the city I live in is a shithole.

Glad to see there are still Zelda 3 hackers active, especially regarding BlackMagic. I have not even attempted HyruleMagic since I've read about how unkind it is to noobs.

I'm just curious if anyone has an opinion on HyruleMagic's sprite editor? I am starting work on a simple gfx hack using zcompress and YY-Chr, which is ok, but it is difficult to edit palettes without screwing up other random gfx. Is there a more efficient way to determine which sprites/tiles share palettes that I haven't learned yet? Or is it all trial and error?

The hottest day we had this far was 45 degrees celsius, which is 113 to Americans. My city is usually hotter than surrounding areas due to smog. We had a warm winter too, not that I minded, but it really screwed over the communities way up north that depend on ice roads for shipping food and equipment.

I've never been to the southeast US but I know the odd weather can cause tropical storms and hurricanes in that area. I have family down there though, they moved cause they were sick of the bad winters. A pina colada sounds good right now

The burn is starting to heal, it's kind of disgusting but not worth going to emergency over. I swear I will never understand people who go sun tanning... Burns, wrinkles and skin cancer, no thanks

This is really interesting. I'll definitely keep this to play next time I have a few days free.

Personally the only major problem I had with the original was Impa's Ways. I'm glad you removed the backtracking (it did get tedious) but I'm curious why you removed the bomb jumping?

I like it. Especially changing his reading/praying sprite, the one in the original game always looked off to me.

Are you changing all the other character sprites as well? I'm kind of stuck in my graphics hack right now, so seeing your success is inspiring

Oh, you're still very young, there is the problem. Of course everything is bullshit when you're 10 years old, you have no control of your own life but you're old enough to realize it. Honestly just keep at it, I remember school work being 90% filler at that point, make sure you understand what you're supposed to be learning but don't worry too much about doing the busywork perfectly.

As for people picking on you, I had that problem too, and badly. Make sure the teachers know if they are the ones starting shit with you. Because I remember getting constantly beat up and having my stuff stolen or thrown in the toilet, then I'd finally tell the kids to fuck off, and they'd immediately snitch. If that happens don't be afraid to stand up for yourself. Ignoring it doesn't work, pushing back does.

Umm... I'm trying to think of anything else I might have wanted to know when I was a kid. Make sure to get into sports or fitness a little bit, so you're not a 90 pound weakling or fat and slow in high school. Try to learn a new language, because it's a bitch when you're older. Kids can be idiots or assholes, but adults can be too. That about covers it

I remember this hack. Interesting idea and I love that they tried something different here, but I don't think an exploration-style hack is very compatible with an engine thaat doesn't allow back scrolling.

I don't know how to use Hyrule Magic but have been using Zcompress and YY-chr to work on my Z3 sprite hack and haven't had any problem. There are tutorials on Youtube for how to do this.
