I just found this editor and I think it's absolutely amazing. I'm working at the moment (well, allegedly) so I don't have time to try it out, but I'm going to try to use it to make a birthday present for someone who loves this game. So thanks, I'll be checking these forums/the blog regularly to see how the project progresses. A few questions if anyone has time

I've never played the game on anything other than the SNES - I assume it's still 2 player? I have some usb game controllers, so if I plugged them into the laptop, they'd work like the SNES, presumably? If this works well I'm planning to buy an adaptor to make my laptop feed come out of my HD TV, and that way it'd be the same as playing 2 player on the SNES. Any reason this wouldn't work?

I'd like to change the dialogue, increase the game difficulty (damage enemies deal you with attacks, and the amount of exp needed to level up) and change weapon names. Any problem with any of that?

I plan to add in a new continent to the world map, complete with importing new graphics, new dialogue, new events and new enemies. I understand enemy AI isn't in the game yet, but presumably I could put alternative graphics with existing enemy AI and new stats and that'd be fine? For example, I could add a Black Lullabud and make its attacks more powerful.

Finally, do you need much knowledge of coding to use the editor, or is it on a par with something like GameMaker?

I will obviously try to download the editor soon and work out what I can from there, but I'd like to have a general idea of how everything works first, so I figured I'll just ask here. If anyone has free time I'd appreciate any of my questions answered. Many thanks,

Lance

A few ideas.

Increasing the game's longevity - I think increasing the amount of time needed to level up substantially (for each level), would obviously accomplish this. I'd also like to add a new big playeable continent in, with dungeons, enemies and bosses. This could include the Scorpion Kingdom, where the Scorpion Army come from. I think enemy damage should be increased a bit to make the game more challenging.

I like the Geshtar invasion idea and Thanatos, in that I think the bad guys get short changed in Secret of Mana. I think the Mana Beast should stay as the main enemy, but that the Boss fights in general should be improved.

I think the dialogue could be considerably improved throughout the game. I'd also like to add more reasons to revisit areas. The Geshtar invasion does this, but just little things like people commenting stuff to you after major events would help to make the world come alive. I love writing and the first thing I'm going to work on for the game is improved dialogue with more humour and character.

Some game areas could stand to be improved and expanded upon. The dungeons, especially, should be made more 'zelda-like', and have puzzle elements as well as just enemies. I would go so far as to add Dungeon Maps (which would work indoors like the World Map outside), Locked Doors and Keys, in an attempt to improve the experience.

I think the ending should be changed to be more upbeat - along the lines of Chrono Trigger. It should let you travel around the world without the Mana Fortress after you've finished the game and see the various people comment on what's happened and be happy and safe.
